@@don0giorgio I'm not even joking. Try thinking logically about what a knife is and what makes a knife useful. Rex121 is not some magic material. there is a reason basically no one is using it. A material that you'd think is boring and not give a second thought to like S30V is a vastly more useful and versatile knife steel.

I’ll be honest I wasn’t expecting it to do that well. I thought S110V with its big dose of niobium would have made the results closer. I think s125 is discontinued. I know it has to come with a soft outer jacket otherwise it would not survive rolling at the foundry. Makers just grind off the jacket when making knives.

You gotta change up your rope so it doesn't take so long and kill you physically. Dutch bushcraft boys and alot of Russians use some thick boat rope seems to take less cuts. Could be idea for these high end super steels. Great video as always! The steel and ht are great. The maker has got to stop copying designs though. Find that off putting.

Then he won’t have his baseline
@JacksonKnives
@JacksonKnives 6 жыл бұрын
It could work if, for example, Pete establishes a baseline with ~200 cuts on the old rope to weed out the wimpy and normal steels first, then moves to a more abrasive/hard rope for super-steels that are still cutting. He'd ideally want to have an overlapping control period, though; re-testing a few existing super-steel results with the new test, and checking newer super-steels with the old test a few times. (More samples with the new, easier-to-perform test would help, too. You might even find out an equivalent number of old-rope cuts for the new rope, though I'd guess it won't be 100% repeatable.) What would be really cool is something like micrographs of the edges at intermittent points, something to establish a curve for the wear. (The BESS could work, but I'm not 100% happy with repeatability in that system.) At that point, though, we've turned Pete into a low-rent metallurgist, so maybe it's all a bit silly.

@@basmca1 when you got your doctor diploma mate?
@basmca1
@basmca1 6 жыл бұрын
don0giorgio you don't need a doctorts diploma to learn how our shoulders work. I've been training for almost 5 years and have done my fair share of research on shoulders, how they work and what injuries you're likely to get from some movements. The main thing is people getting an inbalance by doing things like '200 pushups a day' but not doing the equal back and rear deltoid training. That inbalance make the front deltoid and chest muscles tighter relative to the back muscles, pulling the shoulders to the front and down. The effect of this is the rotator cuff muscles and nerves getting pinched and causing pain when the shoulder is put under stress.

Pete, if you're not doing a review why not wrap the grip for the test, there's no reason for your hand to suffer for an edge/steel test. Racquet tape is like $3 or something and won't hurt the knife, it'll just add padding and is super easy to put on and off, just wrap until satisfied and then tape the end.

I sure would have liked to seen this steel pushed further, maybe stropped with a diamond progression with the toothy edge and then tested again or even brought to a polished edge to see if in fact it could hold or take one and tested again with that edge as I really feel the results when pushed would be much much higher yet....

very interesting; pantaloon-clad effort much appreciated. it's got me thinking that s110v might be a bit better if a high-polish edge is desired, on account of the niobium. meanwhile s125v is superior, if the user doesn't mind a toothy finish. and so i wonder, is there anything useful a high-polished edge can do, that a "toothy" one cannot? i've never performed eyeball surgery, but still have a fascination for the high-polished edge. i wonder what it's all about.?

It's not much different from the AISI 420 steel that's been around for a long time, see also Krupp 4116. Kitchen knives are designed to be run over a steel every time you use them, so they're usually pretty soft and won't usually keep an edge for as long as a folder in the same steel.

It's an original knife. Andrey Biryukov has been making knives since 2004. He's apprenticed under Shirogorov and started making his own knives. This is a very traditional Russian knife design and quite a few makers make similar knives. It's not a copy or a clone or made in China. He has an amazing shop where he makes his own timascus, Damascus and san mai laminates, makes his own hardware and is known as one of the better Russian heat treaters. Try learning something first before spouting non sense.
