Just watched your latest disaster Tim and I’m truly gutted for you. If it wasn’t for bad luck you wouldn’t have any luck! I’ve rewatched where you fill up with diesel then the section where you start the engine. I noticed that when you turned the ignition on but before you cranked it over the oil light wasn’t lit as it should be. When you crank the engine over and the engine starts the oil light is then supposed to go out because the pump is pressuring the bearings. I’m thinking the oil light bulb may have blown or been removed in which case you would never know if the oil pump is working at all. Without cranking the engine will you turn the ignition on, the oil light and the ignition light should be illuminated until the engine is cranked. If it’s not illuminated then the oil pump may have been faulty for some time which would cause bearing failure, most probably the big end crankshaft bearings. Hopefully I’m wrong with my diagnosis Tim. If the bearing are shot Tim when you dip the oil you can in severe cases actually feel the bearing white metal particles if you put some of the oil and rub your fingers together.
@SocksWithSandals2 күн бұрын
The binnacle was manufactured before small LEDs were widespread. But it's clearly not an oil problem now.
@robinboro12 күн бұрын
@ I agree Tim it’s not the main problem here but if you had the knowledge or experience to notice the oil light wasn’t illuminating then you could have asked more questions and saved the engine. No you’re right they aren’t LED’s but they were small bulbs in the binnacle which I mentioned. Hope you get sorted Tim, might be worth installing the diesel heater to make it more bearable if you’re immobilised for a while.

Big end gone. Should have changed oil and filter.
@stevewild44492 күн бұрын
Hi Tim, The first thing is, this is a reciprocating mechanical noise and not rotational. It's an oil pressure supply problem, not a lack of oil. The oil warning light is not for low oil level but for low oil pressure. The light should always come on in the ignition position (along with the charging light) and go out once started. I've looked back at a couple of your starting attempt videos and the oil light has never worked in them. At first I did thing big ends as it sounded very loud but having watched it again I'm not so sure. It started to sound tappety and I know that the camshaft oil supply has less priority than the crank journals. You also showed the camshaft looking bone dry but I've read all the comments so far and it was suggested by someone that there was a problem with oil supply to the cam. Overfilling with oil won't fix it and you said 'something like 'why didn't it work' and the reply was it's not the oil. The camshaft has to be pressure fed and if that fails it won't take long for everything to start clattering. Of course it could be the crank (difficult to tell) but at the end of the day, I'd guess, it's either old coked up oil or an oil pump failure. It can all be fixed (camshaft relatively easy) but anything else would probably be too difficult in your situation, sorry.
@russellsmith64762 күн бұрын
I thought the same the cam looked dry
@HM.Hatchet2052 күн бұрын
@stevewild4449 if the camshaft had starved, so has the rest of the engine, its not worth fixing; the bottom end is 100% gone needs a replacement engine 100%
@stevewild44492 күн бұрын
@@HM.Hatchet205 That's not strictly true as the oil feed to the cam can become blocked in isolation. I agree that it is most likely bottom end as well and my guess would blocked or failed oil pump. It is perfectly possible to rebuild this engine and we did hundreds during my time a motor mechanic. They were stripped and all parts needing machining were sent off to the machine shop. When they came back it was simply rebuilt with any new parts required (minimum here would be camshaft & oil pump) and it was a fully reconditioned unit. If Tim went down this route it would run as good as new 👌
@HM.Hatchet2052 күн бұрын
Its not worth the risk and wasting time stripping it, and its not the camshaft knocking, would need a full engine rebuild, while he struggles to live in it and the struggle to luve in it while wastè time and money with this knackered engine best off getting a second hand engine ordered to a local garage and once its there get it booked in and fitted with in a day can get an engine on ebay 300 to 500 delivered

@steveh92292 күн бұрын
Tim you need to remove the cover that’s left hand side of the oil cap. Inside will be a rubber belt & metal pulleys, I’m guessing it could just be a loose pulley that’s knocking. Did the steering feel stiff as could just be power steering belt pulley. It can’t be cambelt because it still runs & I couldn’t see excessive smoke when you started it back up. It can’t be water pump either because it didn’t overheat when you were driving. If you’re unsure it might be best to look up a mobile mechanic that’s nearby & get a diagnosis & don’t drive it because you have put way too much oil in & will blow out the seals. Don’t lose hope buddy because that engine is a lot better than any modern diesel engine. I hope you get it sorted soon & try to keep warm.

What's something simple I can look at wild parked at the roadside, Steve.
@steveh92292 күн бұрын
@ remove the belt cover & you will see if the belt is still attached. I think it will have come off, start the engine & look for an out of line pulley. If it all looks ok & the belt looks good, then look at the tension because it may just be the belt tensioner rattling. If you’re unable to remove the cover, you can start the engine & feel the side of the cover with your hand but don’t leave it running very long because you might do more damage. I hope you can work it out buddy.

Most vanlife channels have fake drama. Mr Socks has authentic drama. The fact the van was still driving is a glimmer of hope. If the big end completely goes, it just seizes. It's not easy, but it is recoverable. Fingers crossed for you.🤞 You need to catch a break. Hopefully someone watching with an uneeded van can donate, if it isn't recoverable.

@@SocksWithSandals Quick way to test if the crankshaft and big ends have shredded is an oil change. If you get a socket wrench under the van and drain the oil pan into a tray, check to see if a lot of metal shards come out with the old oil. If it's looking fairly free of metal, you'll have a fighting chance, and know that it's maybe not terminal. At least you're in a big city now, so mobile roadside mechanics may be easier to find nearby - the RAC will do mobile mechanic repair calls, and you don't have to be a member, but they're not usually the cheapest.

That's going to be another money pet having an engine delivered and then using a hoist and removing and scrapping the old one. Not to mention the hassle of doing it of the side of a road on Iranian Industrial Estate in Leicester during the winter.

Have a chat with Piggy power on the youtube. Hes near Burford. Knows everything about these XUD engines. Plus the XUD went in many many things so should be enough cheap stock to swap it over. Im quite amazed one has actually got tired

Thanks. I did not even know the engine was called XUD.
@dogrob19732 күн бұрын
Sounds like the top end to me, bottom end noise doesn’t sound like that in my experience. The top end has been starved of oil hence the hydraulic tappets not doing their job and lack of power. Bottom end wear won’t usually equal lack of power until they disintegrate. My guess is the oil pump has failed, you might get away with changing that
@SocksWithSandals2 күн бұрын
Other people have suggested the oil pump, too, Rob.

@SocksWithSandals Not sure which engine is in it, easy one is take cam cover off and look at cam and rockers while turning the engine over with a spanner.......next would be sump off abd check.... next would be exchange engine or rebuild. Got to get ones hands in it Tim unfortunately.

Almost certainly damaged bearings on Crankshaft. Most garages wont touch it due to it being a time consuming repair others will suggest a second hand engine a decent mobile mechanic might take the job on. Good luck
@SocksWithSandals2 күн бұрын
Interesting. That means I could move it a little bit at low speed.
@FLYINGSHEEPRALLY2 күн бұрын
@@SocksWithSandals Yes but I would not drive it far may be on to a quieter road. The higher the revs the more chance of damage caused . You might get away with fitting new bearing but if its damaged the crank its an engine out repair costing more than a engine swap then.

aww tim , thats some very tough luck dude , gutted for you after all the effort youve put into the mansion , might be something a lot less terminal , maybe a stuck valve ? but whatever it is , need to drain some oil out, way too much will cause its own issues and get a mechanic too diagnose the issue ,if youre aiming at a fix that is, if not try to find some off highway parking you dont need to pay insurance/tax from then on could always black up , buy a dingy and head down to dover = 4star hotel n 300 a week + in no time 🤣
