Another great video. TY. As a HUGE Smokey Yunick fan I appreciate that you noted him here. However he didn't really 'cheat' as much as interpret the rules accordingly (for the most part). Like the fuel line example, if it is wasn't written in the rule book, it was territory that was fair game. There was nothing illegal about having an anaconda sized fuel line at the time. As far as deliberately breaking actual rules, sure he did of that some for sure, but only in self defense as others were doing it too. But he did have a sense of racing within the rules. For example, folks ran nitrous a lot back then. The second NASCAR outlawed its use, Smokey stopped using it. Others, not so much. The best ever Smokey story is the one that took place at Darlington in 1954 when he was running the Hudson Hornet with Herb Thomas. I hesitate to post a link to the article as sometimes links go to spam. I humbly ask anyone interested in reading a great racing yarn written by Smokey on how things were back in the early days to search 'the internet' for "Smokey Tells All Thirty Years of Fun, Games and Playing Fast and Loose With The Rules" It's one of my all time favorite stories that you might enjoy as well. :)

AJ’s My Daddy not sure if anyone will ever know exactly how much fuel line was actually in the car . A program i watched on Smokey had claimed he placed 26 feet of one inch fuel line coiled under the seat . If i am not mistaken most builders utilized a 1/2 inch feed with a 3/8 return . I'm British and grew up watching Formula 1, so watching other European open wheel series was an easy switch for me. I used to be one of those people who mocked ovals for being nothing but turning left. Then I watched Indycar and I got why ovals are incredible. Then I stumbled onto your videos and got curious. I gave the 2020 Daytona races a try. Now I'm watching every Cup and Xfinity race I can find (which is pretty much everything back to 2015). I still prefer open wheel circuit racing but I'm loving bingeing Nascar, and I'll never hear a bad word said about oval racing again. Many years ago, when I used to compete on a regional level, we kinda made fun of the guys who ran ovals. You only turn left, how hard can it be? Well, I got my answer when I agreed to run an event on a 1/2 mile asphalt oval. It was and still is the single most frightening thing I've done in a car. On a road course you pop the corner and go on to the next one. Not on an oval. The corner never ends, or so it seems. Additionally, what you see in front of you is a concrete wall splattered with the paint of the cars that crashed into it. It's SO intimidating and extremely challenging. Never ran on oval again and never will. I have the highest respect for the drivers and the crews.
@7natcho4 жыл бұрын
Felix F i am the opposite . Oval is all i ever ran . I couldn't imagine 120 to 160 mph and getting the car slowed down enough to make a 90 degree corner .. Yikes ... Also massive respect for a crew to set up a car to go fast straight , hard turn left and then a hard turn right all the while keeping the brakes from melting off the car . The chassis goes through 2X more load on a road course just because it flexes both ways . You know the old saying though ...racing is the only sport that takes two balls to compete !! I feel the same I’ve ran events at Daytona peaked at 182mph and I’ve ran a bunch of road course events. Road course cars are designed to have a ton of down force. And good brakes. The car I ran at Daytona had little bitty brakes That didn’t work for shit. Even Indy car you have so much control and if the car isn’t turning good you can change it on the wheel. Stock body cars you have very little control and not enough down force to hold you down. Stock body is by far the hardest to control which luckily I grew up racing on dirt which gets you prepared to handle stock body cars. You have to use the gas peddle to steer the car. Where Indy and F1 you have enough down force and brakes to use the steering wheel.

Because a 358ci pushrod V8 in a 3000-something pound car that can actually bump into things without ripping a wheel off is a whole lot cooler than little bitty 1.6L DOHC turbo V6es that have to rev to the moon to get anywhere, in an open-wheel carbon-fiber bathtub with inverted wings. And while IndyCar is vaguely similar in its open-wheel ultralight design and some of its technical specifications (2.2L DOHC twin-turbo V6s), they do at least race on a wider variety of tracks.

Many decades ago there was a series of athletic challenges: 'Battle of The (Insert demographic here)'. Bobby Allison participated once and when asked about his and other drivers true athlete status he told the story of his heat training. He also mentioned something I found very interesting and has stuck with me all these years. He said that race car drivers of all stripes could do something with ease that many in the general public could not do. That was, glance at a rotating 33 1/3 record on a player and read the label. Stages and "playoffs" in their current form are some of the dumbest ideas yet. Remember when Slap talked about the pit strategy helping to keep people glued to the TV? The stages actually make that strategy a lot more predictable (read: less interesting) and they're one of the reasons why my kid-born interest in NASCAR is waning and my interest in IndyCar increasing. It's not as bad as throwing automatic cautions every 20 minutes like they tried one year, but it's still pretty sad imo. I wish they would stop treating NASCAR as something that needs gimmicks to be entertaining, because the actual racing in and of itself is exciting to me. For context, I've been watching NASCAR since 2003.

Another point of interest - drivers often work both with and against each other, making temporary alliances or performing spite moves. Sometimes one driver will "bump draft" a competitor to reduce the air drag of both, pushing them both ahead if other cars. Also they will sometimes come close but offset to the left or right, disrupting the airflow and forcing the other driver into a spin. Unlike F1, WEC, or WRC, on the "superspeedways" like Daytona these cars are running continuously at close to 200 mph so the aerodynamics of the cars control the interactions. At first glance they're just driving in circles but actually it's more like a free-for-all on a skating rink. The dynamics are constantly changing in ways you don't often see in other racing venues. Also from what I hear the drivers and teams are a lot more approachable than other motor sports.

Watkins Glen is the most exciting NASCAR track and I'll die on this hill. More road courses NASCAR
@GHOST7OUTLAW4 жыл бұрын
I agree with needing more road courses, but they also need to revive some of the older short tracks that they've abandoned over the years.

Meh some races can get boring there but some are really good nothing in between and if there gonna be another rc its gonna be circuit of the americas in texas since texas has 2 boring dates and it will give people in texas a reason to get back in the sport.
@Konformation074 жыл бұрын
@@SvechnikovPucks The main reason why NASCAR isn't at COTA already is because NASCAR has an agreement with Eddie Gossage who is the man who runs Texas Motor Speedway. He has a clause preventing them from running other NASCAR sanctioned events in Texas outside of his track.

When you said it's a lot like golf or baseball in that how much you know the more interesting it is, I've never thought of it that way before. Excellent observation.

I will never watch another Nascar race EVER... Nascar allows some driver to put BL M on his car as a sponsor? What's next Nascar, ANTIFA, Gorge Soros? I know, letting Bubba kneel during ALL national Anthems before races? I was a proud Fan of Over 25 years now, several races, thousands in souvenirs BUT this disgust me... I WILL NEVER WATCH ANOTHER RACE, EVER!!!!!!

Hey this was an awesome video!! I grew up around the sport of Nascar and racing in general. I've always had an interest in it, but never really followed it. Well other than playing the videogames in the 90s and early 2000s. Thank you so much for this, im proud to say that I am a fam from here on out!

Speaking of foul language on the radio, I have witnessed some very colorful verbiage on the scanner over the years. Most memorable was John Andretti at New Hampshire. He had a squeaky clean reputation off the track, but after hearing him on the scanner, my understanding of him as a person was forever altered. I'm pretty sure he didn't serve in the US Navy, but he spoke their language that day.

#9 It's actually quite difficult. Almost the entire race, drivers are pushing the car to the limit of its avaliable grip and any mistake or jolt of the wheel will send the rear end flying into the wall.
