I was thinking the same thing. A pressure change caused by the water leaking out of the escape hatch?
@thejakefromstatefarm67684 жыл бұрын
thats was my opinion too. it has something to do with the change of pressure after water started to come through the hatch. maybe it was causeing a suction from the draining water that equalized rapidly.
@matthewhburch61984 жыл бұрын
Yes. With water coming out the bottom of the hatch, it created a vacuum. When the water drained far enough for air to pass into the hatch through where the water was draining, something that deformed under vacuum snapped back. Possibly something on the other side of that drain pipe.
@Feces1324 жыл бұрын
This is exactly what that was, the water draining out caused a vacuum in the space. The door or seal on the other side of the water gave way to equalize the pressure.

Wow! Back in 1985 in Chico Ca. When I was in college we used to sneak in the titan silos behind the airport. It was fascinating! There were only 2 levels above water but what seemed like miles of corridors and doors to nowhere. There where 3 large titan shafts with the doors open and steel cargo nets over the open holes. I remember looking up from somewhere down below and seeing the sky so far up there. It looked like a scrap yard on the surface with mounds of steel braided hoses a quonset hut with pallets of army jeep parts still packed in grease. There was a large pile of wing tanks from the old jets. Really neat place. I went there in about 2006 and there was not a sign of it anywhere only a lone house in the middle of a barren field. You brought back some memories thank you! I'll look at your other videos now!😁

Awesome content, folks. I think it would be the coolest thing in the world, to convert an old Titan Silo to living space. Nice to see someone get some actual productive use, of a space that took millions and millions of dollars to construct. Yes, it'll be a tad on the "spartan" side... but that's just until you personalize it to suit you. I live in the Denton, Texas area. Just to the North of Denton, a man has purchased (about twenty years ago) the old Air Force Nike Ajax missile site, that was maintained by the Air Force, during the cold war. I'm glad to see all these old cold war facilities being returned to good use. I had two years of Junior Air Force ROTC, while in High School. After god knows how many years of seeing "Hollywood" versions of missile silos, and underground control centers... seeing the layout of the REAL deal, is pretty darned cool. Pistols? Guns? Hell, why folks bitch and moan about what someone keeps on their person, is a mystery to me. A weapon is nothing more than a tool...like a screwdriver or a hammer. As a former scout, I've always held with the scout oath. Be Prepared. When you need a police officer, they are always fifteen minutes away. Carry what'cha like, gentlemen... "We're from the country, and we like it that way...!!" There are no shortages of nutcases out there, who have zero respect for another person's property. Hell, I'd carry TWO guns! If folks don't like it? MY house. MY rules, MY way. You're doing this the right way, Colby Thomas. Thank you so much, for sharing your acquisition with the American public. Your channel rocks. Keep the interesting content, and the humor coming. Rome wasn't built in a day... and this project won't be either. You have the appearance of someone who finishes what they start. I'm glad for that, because America needs more folks that are industrious, problem solving, stubborn, no-quitters.

For a long long time here in Tennessee, the law allowing a citizen to obtain a permit was worded, “a permit may be issued” . The result was, no one got a permit unless you were a close personal friend of the issuing county sheriff, or maybe a huge contributor to his election campaign. Then we got a Republican dominated legislature that changed the wording to “ a permit shall be issued”. Now here’s the narrative I was working towards. In the “ may be issued” days, my gf’s ex-husband, a career criminal, meth using violent low life who spent more time in prison than out, had made it known that he wanted to kill me because I was fking the love of his life. I couldn’t get a permit. Guess what. I carried anyway. A little colt .25. If he was out of prison, the gun was in my pocket. He was seen lurking outside of our apartment building once. I upgraded to a .380. Eventually, he got life for killing another scumbag meth head. Problem solved. Now I have a permit, and carry two. A 686+, with a 642 back up. New York reloads are the fastest.

I spent my full USAF career on a Titan II launch crew as a Missile Facilities Technician or as more commonly called MFT. All told, I've spent more than a year of my life living in that underground complex. Opening the escape hatch is not easy. During evaluations, which were often, we sometimes had to open the hatch while being timed. I can't be certain this many years later, but I think we had somewhere around five minutes to get the hatch open. Usually it was a joint effort between the MFT and the BMAT (Ballistic Missile Analyst Technician). We'd take turns cranking the worm gears with the ratchet being careful not to bind them. I think I've opened the escape hatch a half-dozen times and crawled inside a couple times, but never needed to actually escape a complex.

I worked on the minuteman sites, the escape tube in the controlle capsule was filled with sand, to keep them from collapsing. Not a good feeling.

That bang was something that you were trying to loosen finally giving way. PS If you are trying to loosen threads try a product called Molly Dee. When getting threads to move, it is critical to turn until there is some resistance then run them the other way. This tends to eject dirt / rust and carries oil into the nut. I know there are already a lot of comments here but a suggestion on clearing the tunnel: Put a couple of steel pipes into the tunnel as far as you can and then build a kind of sliding or rolling long flat sled out of some 2x4s and plywood. Put a rope on the back end. Now you can either slide in there on your stomach and fill buckets *or* put a metal snow shovel or scoop, even just a flat thick steel plate, on the end and just repeatedly ram it into the pile so some falls on top, extract, unload into wheelbarrow or bigger buckets. The debris is always going to want to settle down. However you remove it at that point you have a lot more space to work from than sending someone down a 3' hole to fill buckets that have to be raised all while standing on top of an unstable debris column.

No. We dropped a steel pipe off a ladder as a test and one in the video was way louder. Had to be methane up at the ceiling that got lit off by a light bulb. Enough to scare us but not kill us

@@atomicunderground9971 Methane that got lit off by a lightbulb? How would that work?
@atomicunderground99715 жыл бұрын
Andrew Delashaw if you are within the explosive limit and it finds a spark. Methane would sit up at the top of the dome. A few extra farts put it over the limit.

As a mechanic in the rust belt try using anti seize on the threads you are trying to pull through. I think you will have better success. Also you should go out then go back in and that will help keep the threads from locking.

You need to SOAK those things in penetrating oil. Then pack them with GRAPHITE grease and they should spin like a tree in a hurricane! 👍🏻

silly question but could the force on the top bolt being caused by inconsistent loosening on both the top and bottom bolts which is causing binding? IOW loosen top by an inch loosen bottom by a inch
@charlie156274 жыл бұрын
It’s just amazing how far I had to scroll through the comments before I found someone mentioning this. They had that top opened almost twice as wide as the bottom and they couldn’t figure out that it was binding. SMH

probably just the door buckling under the change of pressure from trying to open it

Watch out with entering confined spaces that have been locked up for a while, the air in side gets filled up with trace amounts of toxic chemicals, normally it would just go away but because there is no ventilation they build up, there have been multiple cases of people dying and people going after them to save them and then dying as well. The real dangerous part is that you can't see the danger.

I agree, perfect confined space problem that takes many lives across the world. Need to have an LEL

That "BANG" could've been as the pressure changed it possibly created a vacuum and caused some of the structure to buckle. Not saying that's what it was, it just seems logical.

would the Air vent valve have reacted to a pressure drop from the water dropping causing a suction effect

Could you take on a few safety suggestions? Ventilate, I know Radon is a thing in the midwest, so keeping air moving in there helps mitigate that and it also keeps any methane from building up. Hard hats thick leather gloves and safety gear. Do not trust anything in there to support you! Also keep your shots up to date, especially tetanus shots. Headband lights, another flashlight and a fire extinguisher for personal carry. The chalk mine turned storage complex up in NW Kansas mandates each person wear PPE and carry a fire extinguisher at all times. It only makes sense. That thud you heard was most likely steel expanding or shifting a bit. You had water draining from the tunnel, so something shifted on you guys. Put some lighting strings up in there and keep them connected to a strong UPS, so any power outage on the surface won't turn the place into a tomb.
@atomicunderground99715 жыл бұрын
We have flashlights. We did ventilate but not where we weren't working (we do now). Remember the Titan II sites are 8' thick concrete encased in 2" steel plate. Saying we would have radon gas is like saying that's an issue on a submarine. With the exception of two tiny water leaks there is nothing in the ground that is going to get in. With that said, we do ventilate.

@@atomicunderground9971 .... if it's that airtight then your bang may not have been methane, it may have been hydrogen. Not sure if the gas meter you have would have picked up on that at all, AND, there would have been little to no flash. If you note any of the rusty steel around is darker red to black, that's anaerobic corrosion and it'll produce hydrogen. Corroding aluminum will produce it as well, if the conditions are right. As light as hydrogen is it'll collect in the highest point of the area and the 'danger range' is.... wide.
@Nighthawke705 жыл бұрын
@@atomicunderground9971 I didn't want to intimidate or scare you guys regarding Radon, but well-sealed homes get Radon ventilation systems to exchange the air in them, even well-sealed basements. Just being mindful of you and your team's safety. So far, so good!
@seanpeacock42904 жыл бұрын
What kind of ventilation do you have in that hole? I would set something to circulate some air through that room while working because that looks like an enclosed space where you can run out of oxygen real quick especially with several people working.
@atomicunderground99714 жыл бұрын
The building is designed to have enough oxygen for 30 days but yes we run constant ventilation

Hey Guys. Love your vids. For these rusty bolts, etc. Check out a product called MOUSE MILK. It’s an aviation grade penetrating oil. I’m a pilot & have used it since the 80’s. Amazing stuff. Gallon sizes are available. Best of luck. 👍
