The 5.9K FF mode you mention at 9:45 is actually 10bit not 8bit?... it is 4:2:0... but I did my own tests and found the colour detail and noise is much better using this mode and then downsampling in post. There is almost no reason to ever shoot 4K 4:2:2 as the colour resolution is worse!... (shooting 5888x3312 gives 4.8mp colour resolution in 4:2:0 as against 4.1mp in 4K 4:2:2). In fact... why is it ever better to crop in camera rather than capture everything you can and crop in post, using a better processor?
@THEDPJOURNEY4 жыл бұрын
Hey, yes I did already rectify the 8bit thing in the description. I honestly didnt see that the 6K is "much better" at all.. there's almost identical. Can you explain which area did you find that better? As I mentioned, both res have the same starting poitn of 5.9K so they both would theoretically have the same color resolution, even though I think the 4:2:2 being oversampled in camera would have a better bayer conversion since the camera knows it's sensor Vs FCPX for example that estimates. Even if you use Nule or Davinci to choose the method of oversampling, they're all guessing as they don't have the exact camera bayer pattern. The reasons why 4K is better: 1- 422 Vs 420.. better in chroma key 2- 5.9K is Long GOP, which is super sluggish, with that res it's more of a nightmare even on high spec machines 3- 5.9K doesnt shoot above 30fps
@extrashot4 жыл бұрын
@@THEDPJOURNEY It’s totally counter intuitive, and not the result I was expecting, but the reason I thought the 6K 4:2:0 was better is simply because I tested it with a colour resolution chart, and found (to my big surprise) that it looked noticeably better than the 4K at 4:2:2. I included the results in a video review I made with this camera before knowing exactly why the 4:2:0 was looking so much better… it wasn’t until someone explained the maths to me that it all became clear! With 4:2:0 colour subsampling you have half the horizontal colour resolution and half the vertical resolution, which with 5.9K (5888x3312) is 4.8mp. When shooting 4K (3840x2160) and 4:2:2 colour subsampling, you have half the horizontal resolution with the full vertical resolution… which is just 4.1mp. The 4:2:2 isn’t better in chroma key if you are working in 4K… there’s more colour resolution in the downsampled 6K! The colour subsampling is all happening after the bayer filter and is used to compress the file size of the image data, so that’s not an issue here.
@THEDPJOURNEY4 жыл бұрын
I gotta test that myself to see. Honestly I already have both footage with the color chart, and after playing with it I haven’t seen that obvious difference you’re referring to. In all cases, the other 2 points are also good to consider when choosing 4K over 6k Thanks again for your input. Really appreciate it

So if you'd use FHD Pixel to Pixel, what kind of processing you'd apply to it to try to get similar IQ from S35 and FF 4k modes? I understand it won't be as good, but is it possible to make it good enough so one could really utilize S1H and one lens as a 3 focal lengths system? Also, if one one shoots in all three modes, would it be better to deliver in 1080p (downsample FF and S35 from 4k to 1080p) in post or to upsample that P2P 1080p to 4k?

@THEDPJOURNEY4 жыл бұрын
El 3afw ya Mostafa basha. About the difference if you were mentioning, keep in mind that I was matching the full frame mode to the PIXSY to PIXSY mode which means I had to drastically magnify the image of the full frame to match the super 35. In other words the FF has a MUCH wider FOV

Newbie question. So if you have a lens that is a S35 like a DZO Pictor, it should work with the S1H if you select the S35 image area of view, and that would eliminate vignetting?
@chrisklugh4 жыл бұрын
Wait a minute. @7:48 you saying 4k has smaller noise then the other two, but I bet if you zoomed in on that even more to match the same view, they would be identical. The question from here is whats changes with detail and color fidelity? Assuming these have the same white balance, why does the 4k have a different color? Which is more 'accurate' because one has to be more so correct then the 2.
@THEDPJOURNEY4 жыл бұрын
hey Chris, first you need to know that FF has a wider Field of view, meaning it sees more than S35 and PP. So I assume the confusion you have is because when i matched the magnification to 800%, the FF image looked smaller. And the key yo any comparison here is to have constants and check what changes. So with 800% magnification, noise looks smaller. And the reason is that it's sampling the whole frame rather than a portion of it. The color part is because just like pixel resolution, you have color resolution, since the sensor has RGGB photocells, if you samply more colors from th full sensor, you get more color resolution than if you sample part of the sensor in S35.
@OliKember4 жыл бұрын
3:09 - where did you get these numbers from? There is no mode in the S1H that uses 24.89mm x 18.66mm. Those numbers give a 4:3 ratio, and yet your graphic is 16x9. 18.66mm is a theoretical number of a 4:3 crop based on 4 perf film, but the s35 modes in the camera are either 16x9 which is about 13mm tall, not 18.66mm, or their 4:3 mode which is 15.63mm in 4:3 and 14.75mm tall in PIXEL/ PIXEL 4:3. The whole upset with this camera's anamorphic modes has been that it doesn't reflect the 4 perf standard gate. I just wanted to point out this error as no one else seems to have caught it, but it should be at the least obvious that your numbers give a 4:3 image and the crop you're displaying is 16x9. Otherwise this was great, and thanks as always for the hard work.
@THEDPJOURNEY4 жыл бұрын
you're absolutely right. the number is inaccurate. Gotta check the real number. Too late to change now unfortunately
@OliKember4 жыл бұрын
The DP Journey Gotcha. Panasonic haven’t published the official numbers but the 4:3 numbers I provided are accurate and the S35 16x9 is probably about 13mm like most APS-C cameras in 16x9. Cheers!

Sweet graphics in this video! But I think your super35mm numbers might be a bit off. 24.89 x 18.66mm is the 4:3 frame size of motion picture film. A super35/APS-C crop of a FF 3:2 stills sensor is typically smaller. I Would think the super35 mode would be more like 23.7 x 15.8mm in 3:2 and 23.7 x 13.3mm in 16x9 no? I would also guess that in super35 anamorphic mode it uses this 15.8mm-ish height and in pixel by pixel anamorphic is would be around 14.8mm tall.
@THEDPJOURNEY4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Ryan.... yeah my bad I didnt say it's the 16:9 from the 3:2 of 24.89 x 18.66mm. I didnt really focus on Anamorphic. Something probably I'll cover on another episode once I get my hands on a lens.

Just found your channel, so informative and enjoyable. Great job you're doing here! If you have the time to answer this question: If you were in my situation: owning an A7iii and some gear for basic productions, events, weddings, etc. Seeking for upgrades in quality, future "proofing" my equipment. What would you recommend? 8 bit and 1080p seems not sufficient anymore and I don't want to have the same quality as the masses. (of course story is king, but we're talking about gear here) I do rely on autofocus pretty often for some of my fast paced videos, those are mainly for events though. I'm trying to push my work more towards productions, which eliminates the need for autofocus. Maybe I should start investing in Canon lenses so switching to another brand is made easier in the future? What (camera) would you recommend for me at the moment? What is wisdom? Budget: 3,5k + willing to sell the A7iii / save up more
@THEDPJOURNEY4 жыл бұрын
Hey Alon, thank you for the kind words. First, I would surely say invest in EF lenses... Sigma ART has the best value for money by far out there. I use EF lenses on all my cameras: RED-BM4K-A7III-S1H. Adapter now are very good that they act almost as good as native lenses. As for the camera, since autofocus is out of the equation now. I would say go for either BlackMagic 4K + Accessories, or invest more if you can and get the S1H. The BM4K's drawbacks are mainly battery life, no tilt screen, no IBIS or usable autofocus and it's M4/3. Which can be fixed with A battery grip with battery, an external screen, a gimbal or a pair of steady hands and some focus practice and a speed booster to make it more of a Super 35 Crop. Here's my personal kit: kit.co/THE-DP-JOURNEY/bmpcc4k-my-fav-kit But everything else about it is awesome! So you need to buy some accessories to bring it to the perfect working configuration. The S1H... Is great out of the box, you just need a couple of extra batteries and cards and you're set. You can get a cage to turn it into a full fledged Cinema cam. And based on Pana, they will release the RAW recording in Q1. Here's a link to the setup I have. kit.co/THE-DP-JOURNEY/s1h-kit-on-a-budget. Hope that answers your question buddy. Cheers ;)

Oi mate ! You're short of an important information for your theory about 9'01'' TC: The 6K P/P is in HEVC, while the 4K FF is in AVC ! HEVC have a lot of differences with AVC, it is basically better, especially on the noise. Also, it is easier for the processor to create AVC than to create HEVC, which means that your theory does not work there (even though it was a good guess, you couldn't know for sure with a missing information, and you've been really mature to admit you wasn't sure about it. People are often acting like they're 100% sure of what they're saying, even when they are not, which is so unprofessional and misleading for those who are listening to them, so once again, thank you for being professional and mature). The thing that I don't get about panasonic choices is that EVERY 4K and UHD with a FF Image Area of Video available in the .MOVs of the S1H is in AVC, no matter if it's in 422 or 420, 10 bits or 8 bits, 100, 150, or 400Mbps. I really don't know why they are chosing AVC over HEVC on those Rec Quality while they can get the HEVC for higher ones. It's maybe beause HEVC is harder to read for the computer, so they're trying to use it only when they need a really strong codec for really specific stuff, like 6K, 4K-A 48p 10bits, 4K 60p 10bits at 200Mbps or FHD 120p. But then, why are they also using it for the FHD 48p 420 10 L at 100Mbps ???? If you're searching for those codec's informations in order to check what I'm writing you can find them in the [Rec Quality] part of the S1H owner's manual, pages 101 to 107 ! For the HEVC/AVC noise difference you'll get a lot of material online, starting by the HEVC wikipedia page in the "Features" part, last sentence. Have a wonderful day, thank you for your work ! Cya

Great video as always....I find the Extra Tele Conversion feature on my GH5 usefull for extending telephoto range. Could not get any reasonable close moon shots without it as I only have the Oly 40-150. What does suck is that the feature does not work in the GH5's max res of 20mb
@THEDPJOURNEY4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Eric, the reason why i said it's useless cuz apparently it digitally crops and enlarges the image. Which is something you can do in post and get better results. Try it out yourself and compare, you'll see what I mean

@@THEDPJOURNEY ''Extended Tele Conversion enables you to take pictures that are further enlarged without deteriorating the picture quality." That's a quote from kzbin.info/www/bejne/aWiQp5WNdsd6aKs I'm thinking due to the 10mb sensor on your GH5s that this feature is probably less useful than on the GH5. Nice video and nice quality!! I am a GH5s user, want to switch to the S1H once i get the money!! There is a problem with my GH5s that I would love to share with you if you have a minute. I have been posting this problem in many different forums and groups and no one has a clue what is going on! Everytime my camera displays my memories are full, when i plug it to my computer the memory still has lots of free space in it. What is concerning me is that it looks like there is a fixed percentage for it. If i use a 64 memory I still have 25gb free If I use a 32gb memory I have 12gb free If I use a 128gb I have 50gb free! Lots of free space and unable to use! Also what I noticed is that, when shooting for instance in: 4k60p 150mbps I have around 55 minutes available, once I get the memory "full" or "0 seconds available" I put the shots one next to another in my computer and I only have around 35min of footage. One more thing to point out, I have tried brand new and old memories and it happens with all of them, my old GH4 and Canon 60D are able to complete the memories, leaving around 500mb available. Thank you for reading! I am myself of a troubleshooter and tried everything + what people told me in the forums and nothing has changed, this is so weird!

I started signing up for EpidemicSound but they have completely unacceptable license conditions! For example, you can't use their sound if any of your works will ever be used in any broadcast or IPTV environment. How the heck am I supposed to know what might possibly happen in the future? Like, if I make a funny short and in 2 years it's being put into some collection shown on some tiny local TV channel or whatever, then suddenly I have to remove all music from it?!? Really!?! Insanity epidemic.
@THEDPJOURNEY4 жыл бұрын
hey Marcus, disclaimer that I'm not working at Epidemic, but what you're saying is very reasonable and very prone to happen. Recently a similar thing happened to me with MusicBed and all I needed to do is to update that specific license for that project with them. So i suggest you clarify this with them and I'm 100% sure they have an answer already. Hope that helps

Great video. One thing I have been told about Sony sensors is that many of them have 5k-6k full pixel readout oversampling and can scale that down to 4k, in-sensor at the A/D conversion output. This means your image processor can take in a standard 4k signal that was already scaled at the sensor collection. This is one of the great features of modern EXMOR sensors that takes the workload off any image processor. Sony does that job for you on chip. Sony's clear image "zoom" even does oversampling and smoothly slides a windowed scan row by row and shapes its over sampled readout as it crops in and out. Again, the image processor doesnt need to worry about it because it's getting "normal" 4k all day long. I don't think Sony has ever licensed it's Clear Image Zoom patents to any outside Sony sensor buyer yet.

Yeah being approved by Netflix sounds good. But don’t get confused with the fact that Netflix is not a standard of quality. Like they don’t accept the ALEXA mini... which shot 90% of Hollywood’s films in the last decade. It’s an awesome Awesome nonetheless 😉

@@ThePlaceForThings it's not even that, if you shoot a film with a none Netflix approved camera, you can still pitch it for Netflix if the content meets their creative standard, it'll be featured no doubt. 60p is not available without changing focal length down to s35. If you want to switch back and forth for slow-mo you will have to use an older Panasonic GH5s camera or it will almost double your focal length. You can use only s35 on this if you want to spend twice the $$$ and lug around all the extra weight for indiscernible image quality to use it in that way but who would
@THEDPJOURNEY4 жыл бұрын
if you shoot all your work at 60 then you won't make much use of this feature unless you're shooting at FHD. The GH5 is a M4/3 sensor, which is substantially smaller than S35 already. Paying the extra $$$ for this is justified by so many other factors and features, not just this feature for sure...
@blackout11114 жыл бұрын
THE DP JOURNEY Flexibility of picking off b-roll in a shoot at 60p is a standard ask right now. This is not that tool. Full-frame varicam 23.98 4k with ibis is the main thing DP’s are looking at with this. Once you take away FF its nothing interesting. If its not full frame, s35 vs the DOF available in the crop of a gh5S, (which is wider than the old GH5 m 4/3) is not a difference anyone cares about. Shooting and keeping your framing is more valuable. The 6k has baked NR and looks smoothed and less sharp than 6k from proper video cams so thats certainly not this camera’s strongpoint.
@THEDPJOURNEY4 жыл бұрын
In all cases that camera is not for everyone for sure. I’m working on a review for it and I can surely see it’s a very polarizing camera. The main drawback is the price that’s for sure. Wanted to ask you about where did you find the information about the 6k Denoise. Is it officially announced somewhere?

Hi great video! as usual on your channel! Based on your finding what is the best mode to shoot FHD? S35?
@THEDPJOURNEY4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Enrico... There isn't best for everything. I'd say best for the situation. So provided you shoot in 422 10Bit All-I, this would be the highest quality. now if you need widest FOV, then choose FF, if you need tighter FOV, then shoot S35. or P/P for the tightest FOV possible on this camera. Hope that helps
