It’s The Raw codec the S1H will record to on the Ninja 5, with its latest firmware 2.0
Panasonic offered me early access to the Firmware to shoot the official teaser film for the announcement: • LUMIX S1H Apple ProRes...
Since we all went into Lockdown mode right after that shoot, I used all my social distancing time in the past couple of months to get as close as possible to ProRes RAW…
to study, test, and understand what it is and what it can and cannot do!

24-70 and 50mm and 18-35 yes. The last one will work on super 35 mode which is the only mode to shoot 4k 60p.

Amazing review as always! Great to be able to vote for more options! In light of Canon's new R5 camera: Do you think that we will get higher framerates on 4k internally in a future fw upgrade? Cropped or not cropped, I am not sure which would be the best in terms of image quality. Not cropped would be ideal if you want to keep your focal length. I am on PAL shooting mainly 4k and the 4k 50p cropped mode is already a great option.

Thanks for your infos. Really useful. Have you tested the 50 fps anamorphic mode on the Ninja V? I'm still shooting on the GH5 and in 50fps the image is so small on the Ninja, almost like the display on the GH5 itself. They still didn't fix this. Now I'm wondering if it's full screen with the S1H?

Hey Filip, yes the teaser film was all shot in anamorphic on the ninja V. Not sure what you meant by the image is too small, it is the squeezed and it fits the width of the ninja. It’s a 5 inch monitor in all cases which is bigger than the 3 inch screens on our cameras anyway

@@THEDPJOURNEY thank you, allright, then it's only an issue with the GH5, because in the 2x desqueeze mode I not only have black bars on top and bottom but also left and right. So they don't use the full screen width for monitoring even after the newest firmware update. But the recording resolution is ok.

(i was considering HDMI 2.1 but there are not thin or slim cables!) 2) is it true that prores raw recording requires extra power for ninja V to work ? how much time do a NP-F770 last in this case for example ?

1-The key here is 18Gbps, and it needs to be quality controlled. The one i posted there is the one i tested and it worked flawlessly. Not sure about others that are thicker. You gotta test them out 2-Power, I havent tested it or timed it properly, 770 would last maybe an hours? Gotta test it. I would carry 4 of those at least on a full day shoot with a charger of course

I'm thinking about getting an S1H, but don't think I'll be using the 5.9k option very much personally, except on the occasion client shoot. If I shoot 4k either Raw or internal, it will won't use the full sensor? And basically perform the same as a super 35 sensor? Is that correct?

I noticed you gave the nod on s35 fps to s1h vs p6k fps. It can only do 50fps but thats at 6k, the p6k can also do c4k which the s1h is capped at for s35 mode at 60 as well. I know you are probably aware but it just didnt make sense to me.

@@THEDPJOURNEY The P6K can also do 5.7K 60fps at 17:9 which results in 5.4K 60 when cropped to 16:9. Additional crop factor is about 1.07 in 17:9 and about 1.14 when further cropped to 16:9. Also the crop in 2.8K 120 is about 2.14 in 17:9 and about 2.28 when cropped to 16:9.

Have your Panasonic a FULL HDMI output? in your sample of cables ur showing a full size HDMI cable. by mistake I got a 10Gbps cable, it means it will affect my set and performance and also I got a SATA usb cable 3.0 instead of a 3.1 for the SSD. I use a Sony camera, any suggestions? Thank you.

Or - why not offer a 3.3K 60FPS ANA external recording alongside the now-existing 3.5K 50FPS ANA one? I think it's worth asking Panasonic about it.

I think they actually wanted to maximise sensor area for anamorphic, not framerates. However, a usable 2.5x slow motion can be obtained if they would implement the 3.3K anamorphic as well - I feel it could bring value for anamorphic shooters wanting a bit of slow motion and high quality using external raw recording

There's one clear advantage of Z6 - autofocus. And it works very well in video. And Nikon's z lenses are in fact very very good for this. Almost no breathing and absolutely silent focusing. I know, I know, professionals don't rely on autofocus :). But in fact this is the only reason I'm not switching to S1H. If only we could merge S1H with Z6...

Yeah but autofocus is a camera advantage. Not related to the firmware and raw. Also lenses. You can adapt Nikon lenses also to S1H in any case, or any other good lens you like for that matter. So can’t see that as advantage

Considering this is Nikon's first serious step into video, it says a lot that it is being compared to more dedicated video options even if it falls short of some features. I would hope that their next mirrorless camera addresses many of these shortcomings. I believe some can even be fixed with a firmware update.

You can download Nlog from Nikons website for Premiere...and the Z6 doesn’t bin or skip in dx crop mode so it brings it down to the same sensor size as the Blackmagic

The Nlog your'e talking about is a Nlog to Rec709 conversion. What I'm talking about here is the Linear RAW to NLog. Teh z6 cannot shoot in FF RAW at 4K, it's simply not physically possible, its sensor is 6K, so if you shoot raw, then it has to be 6K. So if the output is 4K (which is the case) yet still FF, then it applies pixel binning or line skipping. There's no other way to it

Nikon Z6 - I bought mine in 2020 for $1800. Panasonic S1H - price in 2021 - $3800. That sort of gets my attention. The extra $200 for the external recording upgrade is trivial. I don't work for clients, so the time lost is not an issue. I take your point about the S1H, and if i were working professionally and starting from scratch, it would be an obvious choice. I have seen criticism of Nikon about pixel binning, but I have never seen a comparison of the Z6 and a comparable camera that does not pixel bin shooting real subjects (not test charts). Consider this a feature request for the comparison.

Finally bought the S1H last month after shooting with GH5 for years and after spending $2k last year to rent the S1H for various shoots. I personally don't regret it one bit - the stabilization, the options, the Vlog and HLG settings with panasonic and Leeming luts. It's the most fun I've had shooting. It's the hybrid king with its options. And should the upcoming Sony or Canon dethrone, then sell it. :)

Brandon Vestal I've been a GH5 user for years and it feels like the logical next step, but I love this guy's videos. He really goes in depth with the smallest details and analysis and I love that type of stuff. I feel like I'll just be getting an S1H either way but I like words of affirmation hahahaha. Also I feel like the EOS R5 still has a caveat that hasn't been mentioned. I feel like 8k FF raw is one of those marketing things and their hiding all of the downside.

@Tuca, @Brandon, I’m at the same crossroads but more of a prosumer than a pro (i.e. getting paid). I’ve owned most of these bodies and selling them off except S1H and waiting on R5 or A7s3/A74 because I simply want 1 hybrid body that can do most if not all. The S1H is a beast and checks all the boxes except for af which the newer A7 series and newer Canon bodies have. For what I use it for, sports, wildlife, travels, etc. as a one man crew, it’s definitely doable but not convenient. This is more towards stills than video.

Some of us (with Nikon legacy glass) started out with the Nikon/Atomos Filmaker’s Kit but Apple never really delivered on FCPX support for this camera… I’ve tried using the Sony Cin profile (since Nikon still uses the Sony video chip) but the “kludge” is underwhelming.

Doesn't the Nikon Z6 do a full sensor readout in DX crop mode which would give it similar sensor size to the Black Magic? No binning, no line skipping. And it's cheaper. It's just only 4k. Plus those Z lenses are better than anything you can get for that Black Magic if you want Autofocus. Kind of a big deal. ProRes Raw also works in Premiere Pro and you can download the Nikon log files from their website.

That was what I was thinking too, it's a good price, great lenses, and Super 35 is what I shoot on with an Arri right? The problem is, from what I have read, no viewfinder, no client monitors, weird exposure, monitoring inaccuracy, import transform problems, odd color, and the autofocus is severely diminished. I need 12 bit. but these are pretty big costs. I have been asking around to see if I could get someone to test the autofocus on super 35 setting to see if it is more usable than in "full frame" mode. Let me know what you hear!

The incamera denoise may be not an issue anymore with firmware 2.0. Noise reduction artifacts are supposed to be gone and the -1 setting for NR in V-Log should disable it entirely.

Denoise will always be there in internal recording. FW2.0 will let you denoise less than before with the -1 option. But it’ll still denoise. RAW on the other hand will not denoise at all

Lighting can change everything, 10bit 4.2.2 4K is a standard. Raw will color better. Atomos has a great product and with Lumix as a partner can only mean great success !

Shogun Inferno can already shoot prores RAW. Im assuming the only thing your recorder needs is HDMI 2.0, so I suggest it's highly likely it will work with S1H.

I was disappointed left and right with my Z6... Paid for the upgrade, then found out it was pixel binned and had horrible issues. I actually think the 10-bit log was better, aside from the 12 bit aspect of the PRR. There is also an issue with flickering in low light scenarios on certain ISOs, which renders the footage useless. I am selling the Z system and trying to decide which to upgrade to. It is between the S1H, BMPCC 6k and Zcam E2-F6. I already have the Atomos Ninja, but if you had to choose only one which would you prefer? I was leaning more towards the S1h but now you got me second guessing LOL. Now time to watch your second video. Thank you so much for your extremely detailed and professionally scripted videos. Cheers!

yeah Z6 is not made for this... Honestly... I was expecting BlackMagic to release something this NAB. But I guess that could potentially happen end of this year, if not then NAB 2021. Not sure what type of work you do, but S1H is like the swiss army knife of cameras now. I'd go for it if you have the cash

Still waiting for Apple to deliver the profile for the Nikon Z6 and Atomos Ninja V for FCPX... Currently using Sony3 (Sony still makes the video chip for Nikon) and apply Alister Chapman LUTS but it’s a kludge and there is no consistent workflow... Nikon Z6 was a “no-brainer” given a rich collection of Nikkor lenses that I can mount with the FTZ and use on my Rhino Arc II (using manual focus to pull on the Arc II) and the Z lenses are good for run & gun... though my shooting is under studio lights.

Not to mention my Hassy lenses (with adapter) and Sigma Arts! The way I figure - the options of focal ranges and fast lenses outweighed the other factors esp when shooting under controlled lighting! ProRes RAW can also be processed with the download Nikon LUT for N-log, just set the Input to 2020 HLQ (too match the Ninja) and output to 709 gets you close and seems to make more sense than the wrong camera profile... regardless of the same video chip

Keep in mind that Sony sensors are almost 99% the ones in S1H as well... but that doesn’t mean that Nikon can use V-log to make a decent Raw to log conversion. But again, whatever works if fine after all. Like S1H can have very good results using ARRI outs for example

Well, the alternative is to Download Nikon’s N-log LUT and apply it ProRes RAW 2020 HL and resolve to 709 (resolving to 2020HLQ requires even more work to pull back the blown out contrast) so that may be a less intrusive work around ie product REC 709 content for smartphones and defer 2020 until Apple gets FCPX to support the new codec

I can agree on that the SH1 is greater in all the specs over the Z6, but you also failed to mention the price difference, a ~$1700 body ($2800 for filmmakers kit which includes the raw and recorder) vs a ~$3900 body only. Almost like it is expected for either camera to have half the features or the double amount of them. You get what you pay for. For a lot of people who want to start shooting with RAW, me inlcuded, this is a cheaper option even if the SH1 is tempting. Even when mentioning the line skipping on the Z6, you really can’t see it on the on any of the examples online, unless there is a 400% loupe to highlight this.

@Joacim Schwartz, I think DP Journey is pretty consistent to compare raw to raw, not price to price (or value vs price). He also showed that the BMPCC 6K which is now priced at $1999 and it beats out the S1H. At the end of the day, without stating the obvious, it’s your use case and budget that dictates or affects your decision. In my opinion though, I would look at it more of tool set that allows you to perform and get the paid jobs that otherwise you wouldn’t get aside your credentials. But I see your point to highlight this as tradeoffs of value vs price, S1H has the specs at ~double the price. Z6 is half the price at a tradeoff in specs. Same could be said about the BMPCC is half the price vs. S1H for the video specs but cannot take any stills, no IBIS, etc. But then this video would need the title to be “which video specs when shooting raw is the best bang for your buck or good value for money” Gotta love competition as it’s good times for prosumers/pros to have more options

I didn’t include the price comparison in the mix simply because I believe the Z6 underperforms on all areas, which takes it out of the competition in my opinion . So the price will not be a game changer against the S1H. In other words when a camera loses in on all fronts, there’s no point to consider it as another option. While the BM6K performs extremely well and is a serious competitor to S1H. So It would be a considerable competition to the S1H where it actually wins on many fronts. With that said I’m not sure where the Z6 fits.

@@THEDPJOURNEY 100% agree. it was very interesting to see that WB flaws of Prores Raw as I was reading some codec engineers talking down on BRAW for not being "REAL RAW" and saying just cuz a lack of sliders of drop down menus in FCPx doesn't mean Prores raw cant change iso and WB but man did you prove them totally false lol. You specifically mentioned the $200 upgrade fee for the Z-series, so price definitely figures into the evaluation. I am now at an advanced age, so the weight of the rig matters. For me, the only big hit on the Z6 implementation of Pro Res Raw is line skipping. Nikon needs to fix this.

Mentioning the 200$ is part of the whole Prores Raw “experience” if you wanna call it. If you need to get raw... you pay... then what you get is way below any RAW standard I’ve known or seen. So the whole experience is pretty bad. If you care about weight and shooting raw, then BM4k or 6k would be your solution. They’re pretty light
