Let me add my thanks to the mountain of praise for posting this painstaking video. In repairing my S2 IS, I coined a few technical terms for the internal components. The first one is the HELL-PIN, which is a small brass, conical-ended pin. the second is the HELL-BALL which is the small ball-bearing that inevitably went flying after the umpteenth attempt to get the lens assembly back in place. And if I have a top tip for people re-seating the cleaned shutter blades, set the aperture manually so that the seating pins are as close together as possible.

Man, 1st of all thank you for the video. I had this camera and i wasn't using it for years, cause it had memory card error issue that was not caused by memory card. So i opened up thanks to your video, however i had to do memory card slot repair on my own, and it worked, there was a piece of paper stuck between some things in there, very small piece. I have 5 screws left, i forgot to screw something inside, even though i followed the steps. Hopefully that wont cause any issues. Thanks again :)

Glad to hear you got it going! Only 5 screws left isn't too bad! :) As long as the important ones for the main board grounding are in, you should be ok. Keep those screws in a safe place in case you start to have intermittent issues from missing ground screws. Great job finding that SD card fault!

We seem unable to go forward or backward - unable to turn the outer lens. Any advice would be gratefully received!

What has likely happened is that the inner lens (the one that has the ball and spring) has a guide pin on it that can lift out of place and block the parts from moving. It's a gray colored metal piece as seen here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pYixiaBsZduVrZosi=fWGz6EZYp0HC1lnl&t=2316 If you can somehow see this part, press it back in to see if that frees things up. My S1 IS lens is stucked outwrads What should I do Whenever I put new batteries camera drains all the power
@AlsAutoandAppliance4 жыл бұрын
The S1 is very similar in construction to the S2. If you follow the video, it should get you down to the lens assembly. Are you getting a lens error? You could have a bad ultrasonic motor, or the lens could be jammed due to sand or dust, or if it was dropped while extended, could be off track. Do the lens barrel sections look nice and straight?

I fixed my black screen of death issue, but my video recording mic audio just sounds like static noise. I had a second S2 camera with same BSOD issue, and tried swapping out the microphone, but the same issue persists. Any idea what's going on? Did I wire something backwards/incorrectly?
@AlsAutoandAppliance Жыл бұрын
Sorry to hear you're having issues. So there is ONLY static, or static over normal recorded audio? If you swapped mics and problem still persists, you could try to swap the main board from the second camera. Before that, though, try to unplug the mic and record and see if the static is still there.

GF just got one of these, doesn't have the shutter issue, but the screen shuts off when pressed against the camera, guessing it's a worn ribbon cable? No idea if anything can be done though...
@AlsAutoandAppliance Жыл бұрын
What has very likely happened here is the screen is only supposed to rotate so far in one direction or the other, and sometimes folks spin it too far and goes past the stop point. Once this happens, the screen winds up being in the wrong position in relation to the switch that causes the screen to shut off, which normally happens when the screen is turned to the closed position and switches to viewfinder mode. This also allows the cables to get twisted around and around like a pretzel until they wind up breaking or pulling out of their connectors. So, when you experience this issue, do you notice the viewfinder screen turn on when you press the screen to the camera?

Hello. It's been ages since I've had an S1 apart, and I don't have one to look at to be able to help you. I will say this, though, that the S1 black pictures issue is with the CCD (image sensor) and not the shutter. Canon offered a free repair for this issue since it was such a widespread problem. @@michaelomodele1240 No, those are two very different cameras. The S1iS is the version that had the recall and is a very early model. The XS1 is the newer model, but disassembles in a similar way. I have reassembled both the iris and shutter assembly and am now attempting to put everything back together. I have gotten to the part where I am to slide the lens assembly back into the barrel......I don’t have the lens assembly part that looks like yours. I have come sooooooo far and don’t want to just chuck everything. Thanks
@AlsAutoandAppliance5 жыл бұрын
Hi. Sorry to hear you are having issues. Are you talking about the plastic arm or the metal guide? If it's the metal guide rod, it's very possible it was broken free from the outer lens barrel and is lying at your feet or elsewhere. It will not work well at all without that. There should be two metal rods attached inside the barrel. If those aren't the parts you mean, let me know at what point in the videos the part shows and we'll go from there. Don't give up yet! :)
@MB-ur4yq5 жыл бұрын
Thank you for responding. On your video that is over an hour long (S3IS Cannon Teardown and bod) that shows the actual iris and aperture repair, I cannot locate the part at 1:02:15 into the video, My lens assembly doesn’t look like yours. The metal rods in the barrel are there, so I’m thinking it is the plastic arm. IF it fell out, there is no way for me to find it as I have been working on the camera in several locations in m y home over several weeks....too tedious to have done at one sitting!
@AlsAutoandAppliance5 жыл бұрын
@@MB-ur4yq Ok, so you are missing the piece that the ball and spring go into. The camera definitely won't work without that part. Is it possible it is slid all the way into the main outer barrel? If it is indeed missing completely, I might have a spare one I could send to you.

Good evening. I think I replied yesterday in an other video. I finished the reassembly, put the batteries and the screen said: replace the batteries. So this problem began 13 years ago. I switched between camera and play button and it worked for a short time 😃, I made 2 pictures, but after that the same message on the screen, replace your batteries (they are new).
@AlsAutoandAppliance2 жыл бұрын
The only fix I've come across for this error is repairing or replacing the power board. Sometimes, if batteries ever leaked in the camera, the electrolyte from the leak gets on the circuitry and cleaning the mess off the board might fix the issue. This can also happen if water ever got into the camera. Sometimes the board just goes bad. It's a two-sided board, so it has to be removed to really take a look at it. You do have to do some un-soldering to get the board off, but it's not too bad of a job. It's the connection from the battery compartment to the board. Glad you got your shutter issue fixed, though.

You will need to perform the steps through about 14:20 in the video. That will get you to the motor. Other issues can cause E18, though. Hi :) I want to buy a Pro1 with the black screen problem. Do you think it's a good idea? Thanks.
@AlsAutoandAppliance3 жыл бұрын
The pro-1 is not known to have the black pictures problem. Many models offered around the time of the pro-1 release did have issues with bad CCD (image sensor) that canon offered to repair back in the day. With that said, it could be a stuck shutter, or it could be a bad sensor. Are you able to see this camera in person or is it on the internet? Have the seller see if the shutter is operating or not. If it does operate, it's most likely a bad CCD. Hope this helps, and let me know if you have any other questions.

Did the blue piece break or just come off the board? If it didn't break, it can be snapped back on. Even if it is broken, you can insert the cable then wedge the pieces back in and that is usually a good working fix. Fascinating video. I have a Canon S1 IS camera and now and then I search KZbin for any related content for it. I have had it for 15 years now. The only issue I ever had was after 2 years of ownership, the CCD failed. I thought that was the end of the road for the unit. Put it on the shelf and a year later did a Google search for it and found out there was a bad batch of image sensors installed in many of the S1's. I sent Canon support an image from the camera that was all orange looking with many lines running through it. They contacted me and told me despite being out of warranty they would repair the camera for free. I sent it to them and within 10 days I had it back and it worked perfectly. It is my understanding at that time they intended to fix any of the S1's with that issue, even if if was years down the road if the CCD's were still available. I'm curious though if any of the later generation PowerShots had this CCD issue? If so, the same recourse I had may still be available. I love my S1 and am glad I was able to get it fixed. Thank you for this video because it shows what they did to mine, to take it apart. Simply amazing technology.
@AlsAutoandAppliance6 жыл бұрын
Hello, and thank you for visiting! Yes, the S1 cameras were notorious for CCD failures. The generations following the S1 were not prone to the CCD issue. The manufacturer of the CCDs had a bad batch which affected other camera models that used the same CCD as the S1. Of all the repairs I have made on the S series of cameras, I can't remember ever coming across one that had a bad CCD. I'm glad to hear you are still enjoying your S1 and also thank you for the compliment!

Unfortunately, this could be many things like bad main board or something causing a large load on the power circuits. Could try going through the disassembly anyways which would in essence be re-seating all connectors which sometimes can come loose over time.

canon powershot S3 Thanks for quick respond . I would like to give you more information so you could understand better my problem . On LCD am getting this (E24 )not the words (Lens error )where in the camera lense would fully comes out and just goes in . is and I Another interesting thing I observed is when the LCD is on and I am in the image display mode (That is browsing the existing images) then there is no problem if the LCD panel is open or closed the camera just seem to respond normally, only when I change to the shooting mode the camera lense would come out and go in with the camera shutting down. what is problem with my camera? I used New Batteries for camera but the proplem still remains same. Thanks Peter
@AlsAutoandAppliance5 жыл бұрын
Ok. My mistake. I believe that error is related to the display screen. It's possible the cable has come loose (there are two) or the stops that prevent the screen from being rotated too far has broken and the wires have twisted too tight and broken. You only need to remove the back of the camera to check on the cables and possibly take the screen frame apart (4 screws) to look for damage.

Thanks for very nice video . And I have same camera error E 24 .the reply works fine but cannot shot picture would not stay on .Can you tell me what is the problem? Thanks .
@AlsAutoandAppliance5 жыл бұрын
Hello. If I remember right, E24 is "Lens Error". Did you see that on the display? If it is a lens error, either your lens motor is going bad, there is debris in the transmission, or the lens was damaged from dropping, improper storage, etc. A single tiny particle of sand is all it takes to stop the motor and lens from working. If you take your camera apart, use a magnifying glass to inspect the gears around the lens, the gears inside the transmission, and the gears on the motor. Also check all of the areas where the lens assembly slides into one another. Usually, if it is a debris issue, the lens will try to open, hits a bad spot, then immediately faults. If it is a bad motor, the lens will hunt back and forth in either small or large movement or a combination of both. The motor is not available as a new part and you will have to find a used one to replace it, unfortunately. I hope this has helped somewhat, and please feel free to ask more questions if needed.

It worked! there was obvious contamination when I opened the camera, just like you showed in your video! The camera now works well inside, but everything is overexposed outside... Did I do something wrong?
@AlsAutoandAppliance6 жыл бұрын
Glad to hear you got it cleaned up! Sorry to hear it's overexposed, though. The most common cause of this after cleaning the shutter blades is the aperture blades coming partially or fully apart. Turn the camera on and zoom all the way in, then shine a flashlight into and out of the lens while observing the aperture. It should close down when you shine light into it and open when you move the light away, sort of like how a doctor might test your pupils to make sure they are functioning. You should also be able to clearly see if the aperture blades are all symmetrical and move in unison. If they look mis-aligned, you'll have to take it back apart again and follow my aperture rebuild video. If everything looks to be working properly, the shutter blades could still be sticking somewhat as well. Snap a few pictures while looking into the front of the lens to see if they are working as well. If all looks good there, it's possible you will need to reseat your connections. It's also possible one of the ribbon cables were damaged during the work. Keep us posted on what you find...and good luck!
@evetheriault54186 жыл бұрын
yep, you are right, one of the blades is not in sync with the other ones :-( I guess if I can take the camera apart once, I can do it again! There was contamination on those blades too, should I clean them too?

will this help solve E18?
@AlsAutoandAppliance2 ай бұрын
It's possible. There can be debris in the gears causing the lens unit to jam. You would need to clean the geared parts once it is disassembled. This can also be a faulty motor. If the motor is bad, there are no replacements available. You would have to get one from another unit. The motor is the same for the S1, S2, S3 and S5.
@tersiatrollope15723 жыл бұрын
Hi, your video is spot-on. I did the whole operation twice, pausing the video to keep up,. Unfortunately it did not sort my S2IS's illness out. I could not see any contamination on the blades. Even though the E18 persisted I was impressed with myself as it did exactly as it did before the op. The camera started malfunctioning only sometinmes with the lens stuck in various positions, and it would come right by itself, then one day it just gave me E18. You did mention that the untrasonic motors also has a tendency to go bad, could theat be the problem with my camera? IShould I attempt dismantling the motor? Thank you for your tutorials, the best ever.;)
@AlsAutoandAppliance3 жыл бұрын
That motor is not very easy to dismantle. I have tried reconditioning them before, but the fix only lasts a short time. The best thing you can do is buy a used one off ebay. Just make sure they have a good return policy. Sorry for the late response, and good luck!

Fantastic instructional video and thanks for putting the time into helping others. I followed the video with my son as a project and managed to fix the black screen problem, however, upon reassembly, we found that the flash doesn't work. We took the back off again and found that the flash connector was installed, even pulled it off and reseated it. Any hints?
@AlsAutoandAppliance6 жыл бұрын
Hello! Glad you got your shutter fixed but sorry about your flash. Do you know if it worked before disassembling? If you are sure it worked before, and that you don't have the flash disabled in the settings, then it definitely sounds like there is a connection issue. The flat cable that goes to the flash is actually for the tiny lcd display inside the viewfinder. The yellow colored connector next to the flat cable should be the the control signal from the main board. Make sure that is in well and make sure all of the wires are still attached. Also check the wires that go from the flash to the flash circuit board and be sure none of those broke loose. There is also a switch in the flash to detect if it's raised or not that could prevent it from working. Usually, if this is the case, you will see a message "please raise the flash". Lastly, the flash its self could be faulty, which I've seen happen as well. I know none of this really helps answer your question, but you have some things to at least try. Please let me know if you get it figured out. Good luck!
@anonymoushuman77946 жыл бұрын
We were able to fix the camera, the problem was a red wire connected to a yellow connector being pinched by a metal plate held by a screw. Thanks again for posting the video and using your time to help others.

Hey. Thanks for great instruction, sadly though I followed all steps one by one after all the cam still stuck in dark visor. By the way down & left arrow of joystick don't function. What do you think, did I do something wrong or whatever?
@AlsAutoandAppliance7 жыл бұрын
Hi Hamed. Sorry to hear your camera is not functioning. Did your function buttons work before performing the repair? If so, it's probably just the cable needs to be rechecked or reseated. kzbin.info/www/bejne/oqPUpGCVfs93Y5Y If you try to reseat the connector, you can power the camera on with the back cover off and try pressing the buttons directly on the button board to check their function. As for the shutter, did the blades operate freely after putting the shutter blade cover back on? Something I have had happen before is sealant accidentally got on the blades which caused them to fail after reassembly. It possibly could be the lens assembly cable needs to also be reseated kzbin.info/www/bejne/oqPUpGCVfs93Y5Y Have you tried taking pictures since the repair? Sometimes the display screen is actually black and the camera will still take pictures. Hope this helps!

alsautoandappliance Thanks for prompt reply. Okay i will remove the back cover , it is probable I hurt the button board connector. How about the black screen should I replace the CCD or repeat your instruction because I hadn't alcohol so I cleaned without that

Hamed, go to www.bsodpowershotrepair.com and there will be instructions to determine if the problem is with your shutter or the CCD. If you did get all of the oil off the blades, it should work. Let me know what you find!

Mmmm, repairing a camera with worth of max 10 euro in 2018? Why?
@AlsAutoandAppliance6 жыл бұрын
One would think with the decent quality pictures cell phones take, who would ever need a point and shoot. To me, the great thing about point and shoot cameras, in general, are the large optics and the ability to optically zoom. In addition to this, the photographer has much more control over shutter and aperture settings, and these cameras produce images that don't suffer from edge/corner distortion, otherwise known as the "fish-eye" effect. The flash on these cameras are also much more effective than the tiny LED "flash" cellular phones possess. There are other reasons for sure, but the aforementioned are why I choose to carry my trusty old camera with me. :)
@pblnlpalu6 жыл бұрын
alsautoandappliance Ok! Good point. I myself also use old cameras, mostly canon gear. For instance Canon A1 film, powershots with better optics.
