@@gingerharper620 There should have been an equally tiny spring with that ball. If you can't find both, you can put the camera back together without them. As for the bracket, can you describe what it looked like? Was it round or sort of "L" shaped?

@@AlsAutoandAppliance ok, no spring came out when the ball came out. The bracket is L shaped with one hole

The bracket came out first, then when I put the two parts of the lens down the ball rolled out from somewhere.

So glad everything went well! It's certainly not for the faint of heart, but what a great feeling to know you did it all by yourself! Two screws left over is not too bad. The ones I usually miss is one that holds the shutter/zoom button panel and one that holds the front body panel from the side with the speaker. Happy shooting!

Powershot SX20 IS PRETTY SIMILAR. Thanks, this was a big help for me to replace the entire rear screen with rotator hinge, on a Powershot SX20 IS. (it didn't like getting wet in the rainforests of New Zealand). The SX20 body is a little different, but close enough that your video showed me the way - just a few screws in slightly different places. But the left side and then back came off the same way. FOR ANYONE TACKLING REPAIRS ON AN SX20, here are a few notes. Unlike this S3 in this video, when the back came off my SX20 IS, THERE IS A RIBBON CABLE CONNECTED TO IT. I was able to leave it connected, and change out the rear screen+rotator hinge. To do so, there are 2 ribbon cables, a single wire to a small metal plate (ground wire?), and a 2-wire plug. Take a couple of photos first, to refer back to, and it'll be easy. The whole job took me about 30 min being very slow and careful.

So good to hear you got it working! The only two springs are the one for inside the lens barrel and the one that goes between the entire lens assembly and the metal frame of the camera. It will work just fine without either one. If the one from the lens barrel is missing, it MAY make some noise or experience rough operation.

Thanks to this video I could make it!!! Thanks a lot! And yet, the shutter is working, but now the images are all warped. The colors are pale and everything is jagged and blurred. THANK YOU. Before I even attempt to take it apart, can I ask your opinion on the symptoms of my Canon. Turns on but no image shows. If I press the shutter it clicks but there is a black screen and in the centre a small black rectangle with a white border. Is this what you refer to as the black screen of death? My hat off to you for the patience, exceptional skill (how do you manage to remember what bits go where when you have a dish full of tiny components!)and desire to share your knowledge online.
@AlsAutoandAppliance2 жыл бұрын
Sorry about the late reply. Are you looking into the lens of the camera to see if the shutter is indeed actuating? If you see the shutter working, but you still have black pictures, then there might be a problem with the CCD. As for knowing where the parts go after being in one pile, it is from doing the same thing over and over again. I've lost track of how many cameras I've repaired with this condition. I think it is the reason my eyes are bad now, lol.

I was just wondering if it would be possible to leave the shuttle blades off of this camera instead of having to take it apart to clean it? I know I wouldn't be able to use some features and it would be over exposed, I could just turn the exposure down to compensate having no shutter blades. I don't know if it would be possible to do that or if there is a sensor on the camera that won't allow it to work without those. I know I could just try it but would see if someone else had tried it first. I am saving up to replace it with a new camera. Thanks for any help if possible.
@AlsAutoandAppliance6 жыл бұрын
Wow. That is a VERY interesting question! I don't have the answer to that, but I would say that yes, you could leave them out and still have the camera attempt to take pictures, but I don't think adjusting exposure alone would be enough to make good pictures. I've had many that had the shutter blades stuck partially to fully open and the pictures always come out way overexposed. Never did try to adjust exposure, though. If you are to the point where you can remove the blades, you might as well just clean them off and be done, unless you wanted to experiment and report back to let us all know if it works! :)
@swabygames6 жыл бұрын
alsautoandappliance yes I know it is a interesting question, I tend to have very unique questions but that's just the way I am. I have cleaned the blades once and as much as it is fun to take the camera apart and put it back together, I really don't want to take it apart. I might try and leave the blades off but I don't know yet. The best solution is just to keep saving up and replace the camera as soon as I can. Thanks for the comment though.
@AlsAutoandAppliance6 жыл бұрын
So, you have cleaned the blades before? How much time passed since that last cleaning?
@swabygames6 жыл бұрын
alsautoandappliance yes I have cleaned it before. I have used it a lot since I cleaned it, but then I went through some things and it ended up not used for about three to four years. I really enjoy photography but I'm not sure if it's something that I want to do with my life. It is difficult to figure out what to do with your life or try things when you don't have the equipment to do so or equipment that will allow you to see what it's like to do that type of job and see if you really enjoy it or love it, to have you invest in better equipment.

@AlsAutoandAppliance8 ай бұрын
The size of the ball is 1.99mm / 0.0785in. Not sure on the spring, however, if you put everything back together without the ball and spring, you will be fine. The parts might just rattle a little bit more, but most likely won't be noticeable. If you have a magnet, that helps locate those tiny parts, especially if you lost them over carpet. I can turn it on and off and zoom out and back in while the camera is hot, but the lens gets stuck when cool and then the Lens Error message shows up! I'm going to try disassembly and reassembly at some point and see what that does, thanks to the positive results this video details!

On the inner lens (the one with the ball and spring that shoots out) there is the leg that feeds into the barrel (see 38:50 mark). Near the end of the leg is the gray/silver colored guide pin that can partially pull out from it's normal position. If that happens, it can cause the hang you are getting. That's where I would start. Let me know if you make any progress.

1:08:30, you say 'snap this back in, this just holds the cable'. This little piece broke off... I don't know what happened.. Is this bad?!?! or is this piece 'just holding the cable? I was sooo disappointed when this suddenly fell off ☹. I was really enjoying making this camera. Watched the three videos en was proud of myself coming so far. Most tricky was reassembling the little spring and ball. I finished the lens and would bigin putting the chassis then suddenly this happened. I hope you have some good news and that I can finish this project (is there some metallike tape😬). I bought this camera in 2008 and it only worked for a year. I was fond of this camera; it made very beautiful pictures.

So sorry this has happened. Are you talking about the dark brown clamps for the back and top button boards? Those do snap in half easily. If you are feeling lucky, you can wedge them in place (as if not broken) and that should hold then secure it with a piece of tape. If the clamp is completely disentigrated, you can try to cut a strip of plastic from packaging material like from the clear blister packages that a lot of new stuff comes in or even a milk jug. Wedge that into the slot after inserting the cable and secure with tape. Hope you are able to get your camera fixed. Please let us know how it went or comment with any other questions.

@AlsAutoandAppliance9 жыл бұрын
+Kelsey Huls So sorry to hear that spring decided to leave you. I am not exactly sure what the purpose of the spring is, as it only sits in a pocket and contacts the metal frame. It could be to keep any static generated from the plastic lens parts to a minimum. At any rate, I have worked on some that had this spring missing and experienced no ill-effects. If you have a large magnet, you could sweep the area you were working on it and possibly find it that way. Otherwise, I would say put it back together and keep shooting away! :)
@OlGoodJoe9 жыл бұрын
+Kelsey Huls Just go to any ace hardware (or search goole) and find a pack of miscellaneous springs, they will come in all sizes and shapes. I had one I was going to use in place of the one that was in there. Its sole purpose is to put pressure on the ball against the shaft that the slider slides in and out on to simply damper the movement slightly. If it fits, basically it will work. The original was about 1/2" long.

If my memory serves me right, you should be able to unscrew the sensor from the back side of the (see video at 28:25 and/or 35:20) and clean it off once you get the main board removed. If it's something you're seeing in your pictures, it could be dust on the lenses or even dead pixels on the sensor. Comment back on what you find and if you successfully get it cleaned up.

Superb instructions. My S5 has non functioning aperture, shutter works. Is that likely to be oil contamination? Or is it possible its something else?
@AlsAutoandAppliance7 жыл бұрын
Richard, although I've never come across the situation, i'd think it's certainly possible to be contaminated to the point it no longer functions. With that said, the most common issue that causes faulty aperture is a poor connection on the cable that goes to the lens assembly. You can take the back off the camera body and disconnect and re-connect the cable from the main board. If that doesn't fix it, then it's possible the electric motor that drives the aperture blades is bad or weak, or, worst case, the mainboard is bad. Have you tried different shooting settings on the camera?
@richardcollins54857 жыл бұрын
It takes good photos on Sports mode. It takes shots on all modes but exposure can be dark or light The aperture blades are showing no movement on M going from f2.7 to f8. Canon does sell replacement parts, but only entire assemblies. If you have a strong magnet, you can use that to try and find the missing rod if it's lost on the floor. I will look around and see if I still have spares and would be willing to send to you for the cost of shipping. Otherwise you might possibly be able to make one from welding rod or some other type of rod similar in thickness. Hobby stores usually have a good selection of carbon fiber rods that might work as well.

The most likely culprit is the cable that plugs into the main board on the underside (yellow connector). There have been a few times where I forgot to plug it in before reinstalling the main board. Sometimes the tiny wires can get accidentally pulled out of that same connector. Check those two things out. Did the flash work before doing the shutter repair?

Hello. I don't know if you saw my message on your other comment. (in inner viewfinder there are 2 lens which connected with a spring, each lens had its spot on the body lens, so when the lens zoom out/in the lens will taking effect accordingly) i can not put the lens on it's spot at the same time while attached it's housing on the main lens. tks
@AlsAutoandAppliance9 жыл бұрын
+13inspireme I don't have experience on that particular model, but normally there is an arm on the lens assembly that pushes on the viewfinder movable lens, using a spring to return the viewfinder lens to its original position. If that lever is broken off (can happen during dis-assembly or accidental drop) the viewfinder won't focus any more. Does the viewfinder lens move at all anymore when zooming in and out? As for humidity, yes, this CAN cause shutter sticking issues. For this, you can actually place the camera into a bag filled with rice (uncooked, of course!) to help dry things out. Sorry I can't be of much help otherwise. :(

+alsautoandappliance thanks for your reply.... really appreciate it... anyway... after few days the blade/aperture blade seems to stuck again, i re-disassemble and THIS TIME... i buy alcohol to clean the blade area based on your vid (wondering if some unseen oil stay there)... well finally i have succeeded repair the viewfinder also, found out that viewfinder lens only can set once i dismantle the zoom lens... now the viewfinder work like charm, it will zooming according to the focal length... buttt.... due to the cable which operate the aperture and blade are quite fragile and it soldered out through small hole on the side of the tube... i accidentally made a bit of tear on the cable side, which seems cut off some of the connection... well i still can preview my pic in the lcd, but now the cam showing error18 mode... seems time to put it on the glass cabinet.

Thank you - a well-photographed and clear video. I doubt I would do this task myself, but have noted bsodpowershotrepair in case I need it. However would you mind me asking you a question? I bought a second-hand S3-IS for my teenage daughter to graduate from phone photos. The tally light on the front is always dimly on, any time there are batteries inside (it flashes brighter on some on and off operations). I have seen a few people mention this online, but no-one seems to have an answer, and it’s not mentioned in the manual or in reviews. The current draw is about 0.25mA, which isn’t much but would take its toll over time. I presume it’s an electronic fault. Have you seen this in the many cameras you have fixed?
@AlsAutoandAppliance7 жыл бұрын
John, thank you for the compliment! To answer your question, usually, when this happens, I find that the camera had been exposed to moisture (rain, dropped in water, etc) and some of the circuits, even after dry, are shorted by deposits left behind from the incident. I've had pretty good success with these situations by cleaning off the deposits with an alcohol solution and a toothbrush. If the camera was indeed exposed to moisture, there are usually tell-tale signs. Some of these include water marks in the lenses, corrosion on screws or battery terminals, water marks in the viewfinder or lcd display, or deposits on the circuitry (looks similar to battery corrosion).

+LW2EQS If the shutter blades don't move, that problem will need to be addressed first. The only time I have seen aperture problems is either sand contamination, water damage, damage from prior disassembly (probably not your case if you owned since new), or poor cable connection, which can occur if the camera was ever dropped. The cable connections are easily accessible once the back cover is removed.

+movieboy2006 The spring could either be from the inner lens assembly (remember where the ball and spring go in) or from the back side of the lens assembly. That one is sandwiched between the lens assembly and metal frame and falls out easily while assembling or disassembling 1:12:18.As for the halves not going back together, it could be hanging up on the card slot door switch, damaged body surface, or a screw that was put in too early. Sorry this happened. This can be many things. Could be the motor cable is not fully seated, debris in the transmission or gear teeth on lens barrel, alignment pins for the inner lens or lens barrel not proper aligned. It could also be that the motor is going bad. I would recommend looking at motor/cable first and if all looks good there, check for debris in the gears. If everything looks clean, then I suggest taking the assembly back apart and reassemble. Good luck, and hope this helps.

Yes i found the part so i restarted the lens assembly again but the brass prt seems to stop the lens from turning, and when i tried it again it fell out

@@maitecano2066 I know the video might be hard to see or follow. Best is to take it back apart and begin again. Might want to look at my S5IS video as it is a little better quality and issues the exact same internals.

Thank you! Great video...but I did something wrong. Black screen gone, success but am now getting grainy pictures highlighted with yellows. Did I loose the patient?
@AlsAutoandAppliance8 жыл бұрын
It sounds like you don't have a good connection on the cable for the CCD. Take the back cover back off and re-seat the connections. Is the image you see in the viewer that way or on the SD card (or both)?
@richarda53968 жыл бұрын
Pretty much both card and viewer, hint of yellows and greens in viewer but much more so when transferred to computer. When looking through viewer yellows look pink but are yellow when transferred. I'll retry the connections. Again Thank You for posting a video we can all follow, so many cameras were fixed because of you!!

nice video, i got one given to me, but has blank screen. i was going to try and fix it myself, what is the worse that can happen, doesn't work right now. what is the cleaning stuff you used and where can i get the screw drivers for it? I don't have real tiny ones and not quite sure what i would need to look for in finding them. thanks for this video it really helps
@AlsAutoandAppliance9 жыл бұрын
The cleaning fluid is 90% isopropyl alcohol (get from pharmacy). For the tiny screwdriver, you can use one from a eyeglass repair kit or even a local hardware store or hobby shop might have one. Good luck!

Hello! After going through the whole video I think I may be biting more than I can chew to take on this repair. The website you listed doesn't seem to exist any longer. Do you have any other suggestion of where I can send this to be repaired? Thanks!
@AlsAutoandAppliance Жыл бұрын
So sorry for the late reply. I know it seems like a daunting task, but please don't be afraid to try. Worst-case, the camera will not function, which is the state it is currently in. If you get it working, you'll have a great feeling of satisfaction that you did it all by yourself and you can brag to your family and friends about it, lol. If you get stuck along the way and something isn't clear in the video, feel free to reach out and ask for help. Yes, I used to repair on the side, but it just isn't cost effective for you to send it, having the repair performed, then the cost of sending it back. Most folks like to use their phones now for taking photos, but they don't realize phone pictures really suck compared to those taken with an actual camera...if they only knew!

Hello, I yesterday got a non working Canon powershot S3IS from a friend. The display is always completely white, while I see all the correct information through the ocular (= viewfinder?) If I take a picture the image is ok on the sd card . Any idea what this problem could be and how I could fix this?
@AlsAutoandAppliance3 жыл бұрын
Hello, and thank you for reaching out. The most common cause for this is the cables coming loose either from the screen or from the main board. The easiest to check is the screen. If you look on either side of the flip out screen, there are two screws each (4 total). You can unscrew those and the back cover comes off. Check to make sure all of the connectors are seated well and that there are no signs of water damage (usually white powdery crust - can be blueish and rust colored also). Then, check the ones on the camera by watching the portion of the video where you remove the back of the camera. Be sure all of those are seated well. Another possibility is that sometimes the screen is flipped upside-down/right-side-up too far that it breaks the part that stops you from twisting the screen too many times around and the wires actually get severed. Check all of that out and if you are still stumped, just comment back on here. Good luck!

@@AlsAutoandAppliance Hello, I disconnected all cables and reconnected them. But the lcd is still permanently white. I saw nothing suspicious inside. Probably the lcd itself is broken?

wish you mentioned the spring earlier...i have no idea where it is!
@AlsAutoandAppliance4 жыл бұрын
If you have a magnet, you can sweep the area and hopefully pick it up. If you are working over a hard surface, you can shine a light parallel to the floor and look for its shadow. If you can't find it, it's ok to put back together without it. (leave the ball out as well). The lens may rattle a little bit, but shouldn't degrade the function at all. Good luck!
