The wife and I have a home base in France but still go out in the van for months on end, We felt that after 8 years we just wanted our own space and somewhere to stay especally during the high season, Its also great to work on the van which is now 22 years old.and get her ready for winter so we can follow the sun South. It also gives you a break from people which for me as I get older (now 59 years old) I just want to avoid 🙂 Go for it guys you will not regret it.

I think being closer to, or on the outskirts of, a small town, neighbours who can keep an eye on your property while you're away, balcony with a sea view, little enclosed back garden for Millie, quick morning walk for fresh bread, evening stroll to a family run eatery, is the way to go. A lot of us dream of being in the middle of nowhere, while what we really need is a sense of belonging, a community, children's voices, friendship with older people....

There's a balance somewhere in all of that. ❤️ We're trying not to look at it as a 'forever' decision, but something that will suit us in the next period of 8-10 years. What we need in the short term - while we're still intent on spending more time away from our base - is probably not the same as what we need at a later point.

Great show folks. We really enjoyed the surprised format on a future dwelling. Please keep up the travels as the 2 of you are great and interesting on the humour of travel, food and much more. Very honest on your future thoughts. Get a property with a big patch of land and establish a camp site or a over night park up for your friends, so a property close to the beech would be great. Loved the funny side on the properties on the video with the old metal bed frames for the hand rails and boundary fences that seems to be a big rural reuse in Italy and the houses for sale with no fitted kitchens as the as we did the same to suit our needs in Cadibona, Savona 15 years ago, home of your 1st speeding ticket. Hope to get our new van next year and visit some of your visited sites over the past 3 years as Cadibona will be a base from that of Dublin. Looking forward to the next show and more properties! Very best of house hunting. Brian and Jen.

I knew it... ;-) Great video guys. I love your thought processes. Keep looking, your little (or not so little!) piece of Italy is out there. Its so true that when you are thinking of doing something like this, that you need to use your head but also listen to your heart. Which unfortunately ends up with a lot of pulling and pushing of ideas. I have remotely looked at some 1 dollar projects in Italy before. The reality is a sensible buy would need at least 60-100K of investment. Looking forward to seeing how it goes for you. I love how you think !

If you’re ready to settle then it sounds great and I definitely understand the desire to put down roots after being nomadic for many years. However I’d be cautious about buying and still expecting to travel as much as you seem to want to. There are quite a few travel vloggers who have recently bought houses (which need some work) and they thought they could still travel but never manage to. If you buy something that doesn’t need work and can just be locked up for months then maybe it’s possible. Or if your travel changes to a couple of months away then back home for a couple then imo I think that works. It’s great to have the options and good luck thinking it all through.

I'm so happy to find you guys...I'm a South African and have been dreaming of doing exactly the same.... autovilla and Italian house ... I'm also a realist and you address all my questions .my main unanswered question is regarding visas....are you still on s.a. passports ? Or do you renew there while travelling. Does owning property in Italy help with eu visas.? As it does in Portugal
@WeWillNomad
@WeWillNomad 2 күн бұрын
Hello! Nice to hear from a fellow Saffer! The bad news is that owning property in Italy makes no difference to obtaining a visa or residency. That's a completely separate issue. You can of course buy property but will be bound by Schengen stay limits. You might be able to apply for a mult-entry Schengen visa valid for multiple years, but this won't change the fact that you won't be able to spend more than 90 days out of every 180 in the region. We don not travel on SA passports as we both hold Italian citizenship (although we're not resident in Italy).

Hi André and Lisa! My wife and I are slow travellers through Asia and South America so far. We are thinking of how to make a motorhome throughout Eurasia and Northern Africa work for us and the hybrid lifestyle you talk about in this video fits very closely with our thinking. FWIW I wouldn’t take on a project home unless I was prepared to devote at least a year to the project and I’m not. From there little research I’ve done, it seems that you can buy genuine walk-in and live happily property for very similar prices to the project home once the real costs of the project are all paid, ie around EU250,000. Is that something you see as realistic and might you consider it for yourselves? With love, Ken
@WeWillNomad
@WeWillNomad 6 күн бұрын
Hi Ken! You're thinking is in line with ours - especially after we've been looking around for a while now. We're leaning more and more to something that's ready to live in asap - but ticking the most of our boxes and (obviously) as cost effective as possible. It's not just the purchase price to consider (as the capital won't exactly be productive) but also ongoing cost of ownership. In the budget you're talking about you will find plenty of really nice options - ready to live in. All the best with your search and travels!

You probably know that Puglia is struggling with an infestation of their olive trees and they are dying in record numbers. There currently is no cure. Have you got any thoughts on income tax. I know Italy likes to claim you as a tax payer if you own a property there. Of course you also own a property in South Africa, but with both it's going to bring up some tie breaker rules which may not be easy. There is also the 7% tax system in Italy if you buy in the right place, not sure if that's going into your planning?
@WeWillNomad
@WeWillNomad 3 күн бұрын
Tax will depend on your country of residence. Of course you can be resident in multiple countries. In our case we still pass the test as resident in SA and are registered taxpayers in SA. There is a tax treaty between SA and Italy which will prevent double taxation as SA tax is on worldwide income. If/when we move our tax residency to Italy there will be some changes but we're not considering that right now. There are some benefits to being tax residents in Italy (for us) as you pay a lower transfer duty on first property (2% vs 9%) and there are no annual rates/taxes on your primary property in Italy. You also get access to local benefits like health ect. What you mention about the 7% flat tax is correct - it's an incentive to attract foreign citizens to certain areas. We don't qualify for it as we're already Italian citizens (although not resident). Regardless of whether you're registered as a taxpayer in Italy you will still be liable for some ongoing taxes as a property owner, such as annual municipal property tax. If you sell property there might be Capital Gains Tax, however once again there are exemptions available for primary residences and properties held for specific periods.
