S2E20 How to Fiberglass the Chines and Hull of your Wave Rover 650 Part 1

In this video I reap the benefits of building the Wave Rover "Womb". I prep the boat and my work area, and then it's time to apply the heavy bi-axial fiberglass to the chines. CORRECTION: at minute 2:29 when cleaning the hull, I am using just water, not soap and water.

You explain and show the details of many of the basic steps of building this boat that other channels may tend to gloss over. Sailing Wave Rover is more of a "how to do it" with expertise than a "look what we managed to do". There are a few channels that show expertise in fine boat building skills (a Cape George 36) to engineering solutions (a Pearson 36) to rebuilding including updating electronics and modern conveniences (a Warrior 38) - hmm, many Canadians among this group. As much as I enjoy these other channels, they do not have a Mrs. Wave Rover. Happy to see her cheery face on camera while assisting (and supporting) you to accomplish your dreams. And a seaside cottage (and a few airline tickets) is all she asks! Happy New Year to Mr. and Mrs. Wave Rover both!

@@et5222 - I followed 9to5less on their journey motoring down the Intercoastal Waterway in a dilapidated old catamaran. He had done a very fine restoration of a pontoon Houseboat. But the catamaran was more like an abandoned shack. He paid $6,000 for it and thought he had a great deal. I followed it expecting a disaster episode. He did make it but his girlfriend and he split near the end. It was a nasty breakup with both airing grievances on social media. He still has the catamaran and plans to do some renovations as stated in his two recent posts this month - first posts in almost a year. I guess it is a human trait to secretly want to see a disaster but not want anyone to be hurt.

@@RoversAdventure - Ellen and I wish you both a Happy New Year! We stayed home simply enjoying the evening together. The simple things in life are the most treasured as the years go by. I did spend the morning reviewing the MK 3 plans and how it could work on my Capri 22. It should pass RRS Rule 52 in the local races since I sail shorthanded and occasionally solo. BTW, racing is a means for me to practice my sailing skills. It makes cruising even more enjoyable since my sailing skills have been honed.

@@RoversAdventure - Which is why the epoxy system I use (Bote-Cote, by Pacific Yachtsystems), which incidentally is made in Brisbane, have a "Tropical" rated hardener. In fact, I'm about to order some more.. it even comes with an insect repellant built in, to discourage bugs from doing the breast-stroke across your freshly epoxied work!

Cold is death. I would rather work in 80 degrees than at freezing with heaters, and it is also a lot healthier to have some air circulation.

I use a rotary cutter from the fabric store to cut fiberglass. Works well and does not pull on the weave.

I sometimes file teeth on Dollarama scissors. You let the mill bastard slide a little and you end up with micro teeth, holds the cloth is side. I sharpen utility blades, it takes no more time than changing them, though in my case I often can't find the blades, so there is that.

Olfa rotary cutters used in dressmaking are very good for cutting glass and even work well trimming wet glass.

@@RoversAdventure we are building a big ply cat at the moment and also use double bias tape. It is a bit more expensive but not too bad in bulk rolls. Much less pain and suffering than cutting from full size rolls and we use 2 layers wet on wet rather than one heavy one again for the same reasons. Also much easier to fair as each layer is off set. We also put a top coat of sanding filler on the tacky glass- much easier to sand. Our midday temp is currently around 33C so any fibreglassing is done at night and very quickly. The resin can easily boil in the pot while you are spreading it.

I am curious about the application of the biaxial tape strips to the chines on the outside of the hull. Seems like you will have a lot of fairing ahead of you as a result. Did you consider covering the whole outside of the hull with 6 oz or 10 oz glass and then applying the biaxial to chine joints to the inside of the hull where fairing will be less of an issue? Of so, what factors went into your decision processes? I enjoy following your build and I am learning a lot. Thanks!!

I worked with Jim Brown who is famous for his epoxy work, and his son Russ is legendary for the efficiency of his work. I had always laid down the tape first, in part because I had reasoned that the cloth would help fair the tape. But the way Jim did it was cloth over boat, and stepped down layers of tape over cloth. Particularly with the lighter stuff where the selvedge edge is built up, it is much easier to do this, as you can simply use a scraper to remove the edge, and don't have to worry about it printing through. In reality, if you had to get off a desert island but one of the rules was you couldn't go tape over cloth, you could do it either way. And I now have 40 year old wood epoxy boats, none of which has ever come apart, except a small area on my amas, where I over-sanded an acute chine. Easy fix. To each their own.

Very well made video ! What will the new boat's speed in average wind be in comparison to the Contessa 26? I know you're primarily designing for safety and sailing ease, but will speeds be the same? Better?

Good question! I expect the speed to be grater overall than the Contessa 26. The length at the WL is the same as the Contessa but the 650 is half the displacement.

One solution to handling fiberglass is to keep your hands clean. Wear disposable gloves and don't be afraid to ditch a messy pair. Have plenty.

They have and I use the 5:1 pumps for smaller quantities. But for larger quantities I use the measuring cups as it is much faster

@@RoversAdventure I presume bocker bob is refering to "shou sugi ban" which is a Japanese method of preserving wood by charring it with fire. ... The wood is burned until the surface is charred, and then coated with natural oil, this method is wasted when fiberglassing as the epoxy resin seals the wood and protects it.

Why don't you use the resin weighing system, is it more accurate than calculating by volume?

The pumps and the measuring cups are inexpensive and quite accurate. It is probably more important to have a 2 min thorough mixing than any potential accuracy gain elsewhere.

I wouldn't use soap on bare wood. But that is just me. In fact, if you have clean dust on the boat, it should work in just like the wood flour works into epoxy.

Biaxial takes a different approach from my experience. Are you using a biaxial with a chopped mat ? I don't think the west system foam rollers hold enough epoxy to wet out big areas such as you are working. They also introduce a lot of air bubbles from the constant working of the foam roller. I have better results with a short nap roller cover, it holds some resin and lays down a large area that will soak in . A few passes with the short nap roller and you are good. On such big areas as you are working the resin can start to set before you get it all wet out with the low profile foam rollers. Throw some peel ply on it and fin roll it and you are good. Epoxy puts out fumes too, how are you in that enclosure? I can smell it in my sinus for days after heavy usage. I have never had a reaction to epoxy, but the odor can start to become sickening. I love WEST, that is all I they still had the builder program. Ivisited their factory, great guys. However, their epoxy is pretty thick, particularly if it is cold. That is the reason they apply it with a squeegee. And pre peg if you can. Rollers should just be 9mm knap ones. And one should use an epoxy like Raka, or System 3 original, those epoxies were designed to handle like fiberglass resin. Which is to say that they can be rolled. The foam rollers are good for light applications and layers. A lot of the personal boats they have built have really light glass on them. I surveyed both their trimarans, and they are incredibly light. I don't actually know what they do when they are working the really heavy stuff. I have worked 24 ounce biax and triax, and we pre-pegged them.

I copied this from the WEST system site: "Exposure by inhaling vapors is unlikely because epoxy products evaporate slowly." Inhaling epoxy particles especially when sanding is the real danger, which is why I always wear a respirator when sanding or cleaning the boat.

I know a bunch of the top builders from the 70s, and a lot of them got something like multi chemical sensitivities from working with epoxy vapors. I also know people who had bad allergies to epoxy. A respirator is a good idea. I was cutting up some 1088 plywood a few years back, and though I work with wood all the time I had a bad reaction to that. I used a forced air system after that. Used it through the first 18 months of COVID also. Looked like a freak. Back in the 70s and 80s, there were only a few brands of boat epoxy, and they were made in the USA, and other locals. These days there are a lot more, and goodness knows where they come from.
