Season 2 Episode 5
In this episode Jimbo does some more testing of the fuel injected 420cc hemi cement mixer powered street legal go-cart. No everything goes as planned. Also, Jimbo answers some viewers question from previous videos. There is a surprise! Be sure to watch!
Check out season 1 and it won't disappoint.
And by-the-way, our new building needs some wall swag so feel free to be creative when you send bits and bobs to:

In performance scooter tuning (they also have CVT) they usually look for very fast RPM climb and RPM no dip at all. Constant high RPM throught is the aim, to keep the RPM where the engine is more powerful.
@JohnDoe-fk6id
@JohnDoe-fk6id 2 жыл бұрын
Yup. You want to get to peak power RPM as quickly as possible, and hold it there, until you run out of CVT range.
@Surestick88
@Surestick88 2 жыл бұрын
Agreed. rpm should climb to peak HP rpm as the clutch engages, hold it there as the CVT shifts through its range, then climb to redline. That way you get the most time at peak power and most "area under the curve".

I'd use lighter rolls(idk how it's in english, weights inside 1st stage of CVT) to allow engine to stay in upper rpm's, also check clutch in cvt & use 4th gear :D

@blacknester nope - only clutch burn is the horizontal section of the graph. Before the first peak is good solid acceleration in lowest cvt gear.

@@mmllmmll22 this yes! You change spring to avoid slipping ie. this is you belt tensioner. Too powerful spring and you waste power, too little you burn the belt and also waste power. Then you adjust rollers to shift at right rpm. Reducing the weight will increase rpm, but the slope they run in also have an effect. This is not flat, but has a progressive slope. Also sligt lubricant might protect the rolles from getting flat spots which really make the tunning hard, as rpm setpoint will move around. 🤓 At least that is how the belt CVT I have worked on works. 🙂🙃

Thanks! The 670 should get us to 70 Miles per hour no problem, although It ain't going to fit under the hood. I want to get back to simple projects, the EFI and the Stupid charger seems a little much. but we will follow through with them. I think the 670 will get a little something something, but we wont get to crazy. The trans for this insight is a bit of an oddball. I took a lot of parts off of it in order to make it work. Most of the extra parts got scrapped :( I'm not sure what would be better, a replacement transmission or a whole parts car.... or a different type of car.

@@kansasrose2909 The dip in RPM in the middle of the run is the cvt shifting to a high gear. The cvt moves based on output speed. The engine moves out of the power band. The ideal situation would be no dip in RPM: the engine maintaining the RPM at which it makes peak power. This would mean the CVT operating more slowly and for a longer period of time. As it is it's like a manual transmission car accelerating for a bit and then shifting straight from 1st to 5th gear, RPM suffering and then waiting for RPM to pick up again.

As always, another awesome video! I stand corrected from my comment on your last video! Honestly, I've been a tech and computer guy since I was a kid in the 80s, and also got very into mechanics and because of that, automotive electrical is where I usually shine! But, even with 30 some odd years experience, I still learn something new every day! My logic said that without an opposing field winding in that alternator, that the kill switch wouldn't make any difference in the drag. Well, I was wrong. And if I think about it, it does make sense that it would still drag even with permanent magnets, with a load on the system. Because the load is opposing the flow of electricity! That's basic electricity, so I guess I've gotten a little rusty in some areas lol 😁 But I can admit it. We are all wrong at some point! Now about the AC output, I did mention that I figured it was possible by how the windings are wired. In the end though, I learned something (or maybe relearned?) and enjoyed the challenge and the videos! 😎

I think what youre seeing on the first large hump is the primary weights kicking in when it reaches a high enough rpm which is causing the engine to bog back down before climbing up the the second large peak from the secondary clutch working. I think if you want to lower that first peak you will want lighter primary weights or stronger primary springs so the primary will engage sooner.
@X7rocks

From the graph in the first half of the video it seems like the torque driver guides could be smoothed out to keep the rpms in a similar rpm range that doesn't drop far out the powerband. A video I recently uploaded shows a what a 45 degree gear driver can do. But also shows my engine slightly out the band. Edit. I just got to the point where you're discussing the rear pulley guides 😅 I suppose I was one of the dudes mentioning this before. As for the result I believe the rear spring was too stiff. Usually heavy springs are needed for high rpms with light weights when using light scooter weights around 3.8 grams which is around 14000 rpms, I think if you can alter the guides on the rear pulley to be less steep. You'll see a more consistent rpm that keeps you in the powerband. Glad to see more uploads good sir and hope to throw in ideas you may find helpful.

So regarding your section discussing thrust loads. You would need to build a plate to adapt the transmission bellhousing to your engine regardless. Could you include a thrust bearing in that adapter plate and allow the adapter plate to take the loading from the transmission and clutch? If you then attached the transmission/clutch unit to the engine with a splined shaft with some play you could guarantee no thrust loads transfer to the engine.

Machine the faces of the driven clutch so the pulley gap is closer together. The belt sits higher on the pulley giving you more bottom end. Look at the stock jets on the 670. Auto transmission torque converter with electric lock up, instead of the clutch, and flywheel. No thrust to the engine. Should do the same thing as the CVT without the space consumption. Kind of like the weird “automatic” automatic tranny on the last 60s Beetle which you had to manually shift. Alternatively you could look at an engine and tranny from a 2-wd Kei truck. Since you’re hitting the 660-cc Kei class limit. It starts to make sense. Still lots of fabrication and mods required.

Jimbo, I have a Kubota G5200H Hydrostat tractor it's a 16HP 3 cylinder diesel and an Allison hydrostat. you could couple something like that to either engine and go WOT on the engine and modulate the Hydrostat to whatever speed you wanted. If you included a Sprag clutch between it and the transmission you could shift. Have to have this as hydrostat's don't coast. This would also eliminate the thrust issue a clutch causes on the engine case. The hydrostat would provide a more linear torque curve as the engine would always be in it's power band.

I'm not an expert at all, but shouldn't the CVT ideally keep the engine at a fixed RPM or in its ideal power range? It looks like to me that it's getting into "high gear" too fast and slowing the engine down because of it. It should climb fast in the lowest ratio, then start getting to the highest ratio keeping the engine at high-ish RPM and then start to let the engine keep climbing until its highest RPM Again though, I'm not an expert at all and this is just what I intuitively understand about CVTs just by watching videos like yours of people using them, haha

The IDEAL cvt would be electronically controlled to only allow max power rpm on kickdown and to adjust ratio depending on how much the accelerator is being pressed. @@FAB1150 True, but to achieve that you would also want a transmission with as minimal losses as possible, so maybe not a CVT at all? 🤔 When I think about the horrible fuel consumption of an old 50cc scooter (52 mpg) I had and compare it to my chain driven 286cc single cylinder motorbike (76 mpg) with 9 times the power output, I can only imagine that small "stupid" CVTs are not the most efficient thing imaginable...

Looks like the engine is revving faster than the pulley can shift. Making the spring tension higher will make it shift slower. CVT's are a interesting balancing act. You can cause faster shifts by increasing the weights in the primary or decreasing the secondary's spring tension. The issue with decreasing the spring tension is you can get slip in heavier applications. But if you go too heavy on the weights it will try to engage as soon as you start the engine. I would try to go a little lighter on the secondary spring and a little heavier on the weights.

From my experience on the 30 series the driven spring needs to be closer to 1/2 a turn tighter as well as lighter weights AND springs in the driver (keep the engagement rpm the same) will affect the ratio curve much better. The stock 30 series on my built 212 would blow through the driven spring (pull the belt down in the driven at low speeds and then slip) but now with those mods it engages at 2800 and holds 4400 through the ratio curve. Also the lighter driver weights and springs is info from a comet manual.

Hi Regarding your c.v.t. workings. Your first graph, @ 5:53(in the video) the initial peak to half way aprox is c.v.t gripping the belt and slipping. Then the rpm stays stable untill the RPM of the engine and r.p.m. of the c.v.t. match up. In that period the c.v.t. still slips. From the moment of lock up of the belt in both sides of the c.v.t. your r.p.m. and speed will rise together. That's the rise to near max rpm. 24 seconds into the graph aprox. From that point on the r.p.m. slows and the speed increases meaning the ratio between engine and tires are changing thus that is the point where the c.v.t. is shifting. As soon as the c.v.t. has reached it's final ratio the r.p.m. of the engine and speed of the vehicle will rise again together. I have made some data file for doing my own calculations on the c.v.t. of my Track T-800cdi motorcycle. I'll be glad to assist. If you could give me your wheel diameter, and c.v.t. ratios (or diameter of belt @ start and end ratio) then i could plug in the numbers.

@@robotcantina8957 Based on calculations of ratio's and r.p.m's you would have been driving 15mph when the c.v.t locks up. Do these not have like some kind of weighting controller like a scooter CVT . Adjusting the weight on the input side to make the revs climb higher before riding up the gearing. Realistically the rpm should be pretty flat across the range until the gearbox(CVT) tops out

If you need a cheap Fiero, I know where 3 of them are sitting in a junk yard, plus one of them is a manual.

It's funny, I realized there were differences in design for those small engines, I just never understood they why of it. Thanks for the info on the bearings.

Perhaps try a small hydraulic torque converter (from an automatic transmission) instead of a clutch. It shouldn't have much thrust force on the crank (without an additional lockup disc clutch), would still do a bit of the torque multiplying job when launching the car, but at the same time it would work way better than the CVT.

I love the fact that you explain everything in detail, and try suggestions from the crowd. I had an idea, but not sure how much difference it would make for you. Have you thought about swapping out the OEM lighting for LED, to cut down on power draw? I only say this because I have upgraded my last few cars all to LED lighting. I had to put cheater adapters on the one car, because it wasn't seeing the draw expected, and was throwing warning lights. I am not sure if it would make enough difference to help, but figured I would mention it.

He already has the bypass switch to disengage the alternator, so there would be no benefit.
@Drev222
@Drev222 2 жыл бұрын
@@aimlessweasel Yes, but the lighting will still be on when that switch is flipped(time and weather dependent), draining power from the battery. So even with the switch off, the lighting would play a factor in the power drain, even if it is slight. When every little bit counts, I felt that it is worth pointing out.
@reverse_engineered
@reverse_engineered 2 жыл бұрын
@@Drev222 It's draining power from the battery, not the engine, so that won't affect engine performance, just how long he can run without the alternator engaged, which isn't a limiting factor.
@Drev222
@Drev222 2 жыл бұрын
@@reverse_engineered the vehicle has more power draw than just the engine. When the switch is turned off, the battery is taking the full brunt. If voltages dip on the various sensors, that could cause issues with engine performance. My guess is that this insight build has minimized the power draw as much as possible, but they still need to exist to keep the vehicle somewhat legal. As I originally said, I don't know if it would make that much of a difference. It was still worth mentioning

Really good suggestion, We don't use the lights, they are there because they are required to be street legal.... but I think it would be cool to switch everything over to LED and see how much power we save. Look forward to that in a future video.
