I like the fact you placed the vents where you want them, rather than being concerned with symmetry.
@cosmicinsane516 Жыл бұрын
That vent is pretty slick. I’ve seen similar ball check ventilators used on commercial ships, but they just use a single ball. That meant the bigger diameter vent pipe you needed, the taller the unit got to accommodate the ball. The way that vent uses a bunch of individual smaller float balls makes it way lower profile.

I have some of these ventilators on my boat.They are the best. Air only. Yesterday sailing from Ramsgate to Dover I had some good waves over my foredeck and this ventilator. Later at night a went to bed in the v-berth. Completely dry, not a single drop. I am surprised that We don’t see them more often. I am not sponsored by Aironly, just very impressed over this very good product.

We've had 3 air only vents for almost a decade. They are always left open and never have leaked. We think they're so great we are installing 2 more in the v-berth. The cowl style does move a lot more air than the low profile. I think the low profile vents are best suited for exhaust, down stream of the cowl style air only vents.

Great episode, Alan. Finally someone clarified how the Air Only vents operate. I'm glad it was you, someone with a teaching background, because I now see those vents as better than Dorade boxes for their much reduced windage. Which, to me, would be a measurable difference on a boat the size of Wave Rover. Very effective, with the benefit of greater efficiency. Thank you for educating me.

When you start the hole saw run it backwards for a bit to score the surface. It gives a groove to hold saw steady when you cut through.

Hi Alan, I like the vents, I guess the ball valves means they can only be mounted horizontally, still a good idea keeps the deck as clean as possible, no snagging lines on those. With regard to the coins, I think your framing of the investment is a bet against your success, not something i am sure anyone wants. However once you competed your adventure and proved the Wave Rover 650, there are going to be hundreds of them built, then I can see collectors wanting a bit of that history, just the like the Wharram designs.
@HankMeyer Жыл бұрын
Cool device! Does it still prevent water from getting in even when the boat is pitched at an angle? I'd have guessed that the little floats depend on a somewhat level position to do their job properly.

In conditions that look like I may be capsized, I will be closing the vents and dogging down the hatch.

Uhh, you forgot to mention the key point of drilling both sides with a hole saw! You break the veneers so you get a clean hole with out blow out of the veneers. Nice and clean!

Hi Allen. It's great that you were able to do a little part in helping the Ukraine Economy. Those poor people need all the help they can get. The vent does look like it will keep the water out but I'm a little skeptical about how much air it will let in. I was wondering if you have any specs that might show cfm (flow) for various outside wind speeds. Thanks.

I don't have any data that way but will thoroughly review them when underway.

Hello from Ontario Canada, I have a concern about the air only vent and that is, what happens during a capsize? It would seem that water would flood the unit, the balls would float- KEEPING OPEN the vent and flooding the boat. Perhaps you should do a test?

Cool idea for the vent but I suspect it's success at blocking water is going to equal a pretty good job in stopping air flow. Too many turns to get a breeze moving through it.
@areyoumad Жыл бұрын
They seem to sell electric 12 or 24V ventilators that fit their vents to compensate for this.
@robertfontaine3650 Жыл бұрын
@@areyoumad That makes more sense for the vent but not such a great thing on a sailboat.

Hi Alan, great design and your presentation as usual. One note, I did not notice, but assume, you will be sealing the cut edge of the opening with epoxy. You are so diligent with the sealing of your exposed wood, I take this as a given, and probably why it was not mentioned. If you did mention this and I missed it, sorry. Keep up the great work and look forward to the upcoming launch and tracking you on your voyage. Don

How UV resistant are these vents? Might they become brittle with prolonged exposure?
@areyoumad Жыл бұрын
I guess you could ask them directly. There's a contact email address on their website.
@areyoumad Жыл бұрын
The problem I see with this design is: if the boat ever comes to capsize with the vent opened, water will make the balls float in the opposite direction that they are designed for, hence water will flow through.

That is quite an elaborate design for an Air Vent, wow. It probably works well, UNLESS your boat IS UPSIDE DOWN, and the air vent IS open and UNDER WATER, in which case water will flow in relatively freely. Hopefully, and EXTREMELY LIKELY that will NEVER happen.

We have had one of the flats and two of the dorades on our sailboat for a decade. Not once have they leaked, regardless the condtions. The downside is they allow virtually zero air flow. Our two dorades have the computer fans attached. Evem with those it makes little difference.
