3:18 sir great video, helped me a lot. However, shouldn't this compound be 2-ethyl 3-methylpentane
@cherise39453 жыл бұрын
@@hanque5734 Thanks man I didn't get that part of the video until your explanation
@TaeminnieLee2 жыл бұрын
No... because the longest chain is 6 carbons not 5. So 3,4-dimethylhexane is correct.

the reason why 3,4-dimethylhexane is not referred to as ethyl is because its part of the carbon chain? im a little confused but this is the only way it made sense to me
@rugvedpawar71144 жыл бұрын
at 3:45, why did you go 3, 4 dimethyl.... for the compound on the left and then go 3-ethyl-2.... Do you not go in ascending order of where the alkyls are bonded?? or does it have to do with something else.
@rugvedpawar71144 жыл бұрын
nvm you said alphabet my bad.

3:02 Why is the second one called 3-ethylhexane and not 3-methylhexane? I'm confused
@MSJChem5 жыл бұрын
There is an ethyl group (C2H5) bonded to carbon number 3 of the longest chain (6 carbon atoms), hence the name 3-ethylhexane.
@Sarah-ke3jg4 жыл бұрын
3:05 why did you number the locations like that?
@MSJChem4 жыл бұрын
Sarah Al-Mulla You could number from the opposite end but you’d get the same name because the two methyl groups would still be on carbons numbered 3 and 4.

How many more videos do you have to make until you cover all of the syllabus
@MSJChem5 жыл бұрын
I would say that I have probably covered almost all of the syllabus by now. Now I’m just updating old videos.

@MSJChem2 жыл бұрын
The methyl is the CH3 group on the second carbon atom.
@jaydenliu30905 жыл бұрын
how come that example is called 3 ethylhexane

Mike Sugiyama Jones but isn’t the group at carbon #4 CH2? Isn’t CH2 Ethyl?
@MSJChem5 жыл бұрын
No, an ethyl group is C2H5.
@jaydenliu30905 жыл бұрын
Mike Sugiyama Jones yea so isn’t the group on carbon #4 CH2+CH3 =C2H5, an ethyl group?

That is part of the longest carbon chain (six carbon atoms).
