This longer video is packed with content and emotional realities - we hope you enjoy it!!!
Here is the link to the daily log from the Atlantic Crossing for more details about the trip for those that love details!
forecast.predictwind.com/trac...
Join the Barefoot Doctors for the completion of the trans-Atlantic voyage as they travel through St Thomas and the Bahamas to arrive in the USA. Facing 38 knot squalls and the worst section of the whole journey for the new crew, we get to St Thomas and meet up with Sailing SISU's Erik and Petra for a night of entertainment and DEEP discussions!
We sail on from St Thomas, that was really disappointing with foreigners being ripped off (it seems) rating the question that the Caribbean Pirates of old are now taxi drivers and politicians.....
We sail on through the Bahamas where we have a swim in the beautiful waters and it brings back memories of our BURNT Leopard 50 and the memories of pain, loss and apprehension...
We sail on to the USA and over the 7m deep Great Bahama Banks for 100nm and it brings up the facts about why SHALLOW DRAFT and beachable boats, like the Porotofino 52 are so great....
My departure from the boat in Fort Lauderdale is the closing of one chapter and the start of another with the days to getting back together with Eli, getting closer and closer....
We also offer our mental health services and the TUFMINDS processes to help the victims of the Lahaina fires on Maui. So if you know anyone that needs counselling or help with loss, bereavement, stress, anxiety, PTSD and much more, get them to contact us in the comments below, contact u=our Facebook page on Barefoot Doctors or email us directly on drjohnmcintosh@tpg.com.au
We have reached out to the organisers of the relief efforts and several individuals but would like to help many more people because the TUFMINDS strategies help individuals to reframe bad experiences and we can teach these to many folk together so group sessions could be arranged if the numbers warrant it... Please put the word out to anyone you know.
The first Patreon sailing event was enjoyed by 4 Patreons who had a wonderful week in the Gocek and Fethiye area - they all claim to have benefitted immensely from the experienc3e and are much more clear on their sailing dreams as a result!!! Join up if you want to have those opportunities...
Our Patreon option starts from only $3 per week, and will allow our supporters to enjoy live updates, join us for sailing events in Aegean Greece, May 2024. Then in Dubai Jan 2025 (aboard the new Portofino 52) join us for the launching party and test sails!!! We are also offering boat build tours with sailing off Dubai to share the progress of the P52 build and provide whatever sailing or life discussions that YOU want us to provide during all of these events..... It is a very exciting prospect and we have been requested repeatedly to give advice, take folk sailing, teach sailing techniques etc etc.... So here it is!!!
Any Patreons will have the choice to join us for these events which are usually about 5 days to be up close and personal with Eli and John and learn from their expertise... There will be sailing trips, excursions and chats during the events and the subjects will be designed to suit the participants that will be there. Patreons will receive all the sailing and talks with the Barefoot Doctors without any cost but will only have to cover their own travel, food and accomodation costs.
All Patreon proceeds go to Exqisit Life Foundation to support TUFMINDS Mental Resilience and Suicide Prevention Program worldwide.
Some come Barefoot with us on this exciting journey - now physically and in person with Patreon if you wish!!!
Binge watch and come barefoot with us as we travel and explore the planet, mostly from the water but sometimes through the minds of others as we provide aid and support where needed through the amazing TUFMINDS solutions!
WHAT IS TUFMINDS
The free TUFMINDS program is released as a smartphone program under the Exqisit Life Foundation Charity, a registered not for profit and requires financial support to fund the free program. TUFMINDS saves lives by intervening at the point of suicide and pulling everyone to higher levels of mental resilience, wellbeing and functioning. it also creates better attitudes, resilience and coping - all very important for sailors facing difficult situations at sea.

Just scratched St Thomas off my list. I've never minded paying higher fees than local people, but 5x and X everybody, so in your case $90 for a $3 ride? I get the message -- don't bother coming here. There is no place on earth like the Bahamas. Once I visited and sailed there I couldn't imagine a life that didn't include the Bahamas. It stands out in photos from space. The people are wonderful. And it has the third highest per capita income in the Americas. Truly it's paradise.

Thanks very much for your support and kind words, Keith! We have really kept it all private because of the legal process that has been under way but we hope that it is almost over. We will share that story and the cause of the fire when all the legals are closed.

Thanks Ian - yes, we always have tried to keep the end point / dream in focus and then do what we need to do. We also had to make a decision not to let other people's bad attitudes / decisions (eg delayed insurance payout) stop us from moving forward to do the things that were important to us...

@barefootdoctorssailing8567

We noticed that too! It seems to be quite common cause we had a one legged seagull that visited our home in Mackay almost every day ( we called him “one leg”) and then we have seen other one legged seagulls quite often… Any idea of how it happens?

I agree with your sentiments about shallow draft and beaching etc and love the concept of folding daggerboards. I would worry about the folding mechanism becoming jammed with algae/barnacles or sand after you have beached. Are there built in safeguards to minimise this (other than anti-fouling of course which is never 100% effective)?
@barefootdoctorssailing8567
@barefootdoctorssailing8567 9 ай бұрын
Thanks for the support and comments! Very good point you make... It will be easier to clean this centreboard than daggerboards to because it is only the width of the keel and not all the way up so using a paint scraper we can get any barnacles off relatively easily and it will be up and down on a regular basis so the stuff should never grow that much to block it... We have not discuss the possibility of rubber flaps to keep all the growth out but I am not sure if that will just add to the difficulty of cleaning - that will be decided closer to the time after discussion with Raffaele.

Hi Rick! We have not had the finalisation of the process yet but we do see the light on the horizon. We hope to get a resolution soon with the aid of lawyers (unfortunately) and will let every one know when the process is finalised. It's been a long time without that significant amount of money so produced some interesting challenges for us along the way...

They have carried out those medical needs, I wonder if there is insurance recovery news?
@barefootdoctorssailing8567
@barefootdoctorssailing8567 9 ай бұрын
Thanks for your comment "Lucky". Yes we do always provide medical help wherever we are and to to other folk at a distance. That has occurred over several seasons in the Pacific (New Cal/ Vanuatu, PNG) and when we sailed to INdonesia and East Timor. Our season in the Bahamas also resulted in quite a lot of work of both physical and mental health (dislocated shoulders, Ear drum problems and active suicidal treatment, and others). With us in the Med at present, it is mainly mental health that we provide as the health systems are quite good for the physical health sides. However even last week we were dealing with a seriously depressed person struggling in a foreign country and we provided the tools to increase his resilience and get through the challenges to keep going and get "free". Mostly when we are in developed countries it is the mental health (and skin cancer) that we help with but at all times, we provide long distance help (phone or computer calls) to advise on all medical matters. The free TUFMINDS program is available on any smartphone so anyone with stress, depression, anxiety as well as simple things like self esteem or insomnia can get active treatments at any time - this is being used in 65 countries and is saving lives from suicide on a regular basis....

Thanks RB for the concern! The Insurance recovery process still under way and we are hoping to get some outcome from the insurance company in the near future and when we do, we will let everyone know. SO it is still under way - but we finally have movement and the end point is in sight!!!

Hi Bertrand, thanks for watching and for your comments. If you are interested in seeing the Portofino and going to Dubai, Raffaele will be happy to show you around and give you whatever info you need. The internal structures are completely adjustable so you can modify your internals as you please - that is the beauty of a personally built boat. The AMels and Supermaramu would be the boat I got if I was doing monohulls but cats are so much easier and more civilised to live aboard. Send Raffaele and email at info@portofinomarineservices.com. We will be there at the end of this month to look at the progress of our 52 so that will be very exciting... Good luck and hope to see you in Dubai!

Did all the non US citizens have B1 visas to get into USA?
@barefootdoctorssailing8567
@barefootdoctorssailing8567 9 ай бұрын
Hi Jamie, yes that right. We all needed to have those while entering on a private boat but if you fly in on commercial flights or ships, the online ESTA is fine. The B1 visa is quite a hassle to obtain and you are meant to be in your country of origin to apply - not easy when you are sailing around the world!
