Over the years (I'm 75) I have owned a number of bows both recurve and Longbows. My favorite is by far my Howard Hill Wesley "Lambo" 66" longbow. Several comments about the different models / grip material. 1) The shorter your draw length, the shorter the bow should be. I started with 2 x 53# 68" "Big Fives," but after a motorcycle accident my draw length shortened and now I shoot only 66" HH longbows. As Craig will tell you, For smoothness and speed Bamboo is the best Choice with "Lamboo" (If he still offers it) Also, I prefer a non-laced grip. I have owned several HH longbows that were laced (Looks nicer IMO), but sustained shooting tended to cause soreness on inside of my bow fingers. Now, its non-laced for me. Two other things come to mind: 1) The Black Elk Grip is the softest and least likely to become slick (IMO) and I now wear a MG goat skin golfing glove on my bow hand which really locks one's grip in place and feels very secure. (Tan in summer, Black in winter in SC). A little hint about attaining a good grip is to apply a little back pressure on the string and allow the grip to seat itself in your hand and close your fingers as you increase draw pressure. (Do now shoot it open handed. Well - you could maybe once to get a idea. ;)

Another Awesome Review Joe. Great job. I am addicted to this style of bow. It's all I shoot now. I got a Wesley Special back in March and now I just picked a Legend Stick a few weeks ago. The Legend Stick is Sweeeeet! That caramelized bamboo is just something special. Thanks for your dedication to traditional archery! Steve

HUGE THANKS For your video and your insight. I am building a Howard Hill type bow, After reading his book. Your video cleared up some of the great mysteries as to why he was so good with that particular type bow. Can’t wait to get mine done and into the Hunting woods

I have a Bear Montana longbow and i hated the leather glued grip. I removed the leather and used some Dawn dish soap and warm water to scrub off the adhesive from the handle. I cut a piece of bike inner-tube to the length of my handle and I put it over the handle by rolling it on. Its comfortable, grippy, durable, and dirt cheap. I love it.

Great vid but just one thing I think you should change in the video is that you do not need the overlays on a howard hill for a FF string. They have come with a fiberglass wedge in the tips since the 80/90's( don't remember)

I shot my first deer with a Hill longbow (69", 70#) when I was 16 YO. He was running full speed and jumping an 8 ft. ditch when my arrow struck him in the shoulder, penetrating the shoulder blade, severing the spine and embedding in the right shoulder blade. The only time my arrow didn't go all the way through. I never worried about speed (162- 166 fps). My arrows always got there, ready for business. Sweet and Forgiving was that bows name! I had been running, I wasn't 90 degrees to the target, the deer wasn't 90degrees to me. I was 55-60 feet away when I released. I couldn't have done it with any other bow and arrows.

just a head up. you can use a ff string without the overlays on a hill bow since the limbs are deep cored.

Nicely done...I own two Howard Hill Wesley Special longbows one at a 64 AMO at 43 pounds at my 25 inch draw length along with a 66 inch AMO model at 44 pounds at my same draw length and they are sweet, smooth shooting longbows that send a heavy Port Orford wood arrow down range with authority. When my wood arrows are matched with Howard Hill broadheads they are a wonderful an accurate combination that zip right through white tail deer without issue. Thank you- Michael

How much does a bow like this one run for? Ever shot it in comparison to a Wesley special? I got a Wesley special and I'll be buying another hill bow but I'd like that style grip and somthing a little litter in draw weight. Thanks!
@s3archery8498 жыл бұрын
Corey - it's been a while, but I think it came in at about $650. That included the deer antler limb tips. Visit the Howard Hill Longbows website for exact pricing though.

Regarding your question about comparing to the Wesley Special: no, I haven't had the chance to shoot one, so cannot comment about a comparison.
@abot198 жыл бұрын
In my opinion all of Craig's bow models shoot more or less the same. In higher poundage like +60 the extra lamination does seem to help smooth it out. But you can add another lamination to any of the models. My personal favorite is the Cheetah.

I really loved shooting my Howard's. My Tembo 60# Is a great performer. At 10 yard incriments out to 50 yards just aim a bit higher and the arrows just drop right in and right on. My Wesly Special 53# is crazy accurate. I'll be 70 soon and my hunting days have been over for a few years now..That COPD has got me now. All the arrows Iv'e made and other bows in my collection I hate to say will be an estate that will never be appreciated except for the cash they will bring.

Only just seen this, but I just wanted to send greetings from another 70ish person, also with COPD, but the other side of the Atlantic. I've made and shot longbows, the elb variety mainly, for many years, though I had a Jerry Hill bow long ago. No hunting here, but how I miss a field shoot in an English oakwood at bluebell time. Best wishes to you.

@@johnminnitt8101 Great to hear from you John. In these past few years I've taken up air gun hunting. Got about 6 rifles now plus two pistols and with infared night vision. So if any racoons or oposims come in my back yard they are dead meat. I started out setting up for crows. But one day a fledgling followed it's parents to the yard where I was feeding all the birds. But it couldn't fly back out and was injured. So I had a cage and brought it in the house and started feeding it hoping it would get well enough to fly on it's own. My god man what an intellegent bird. It got to know me and my dogs. And was a real problem solver. One day we heard my little dog LuLu barking as if she was in the back yard. But it was'nt LuLu it was my little crow "Good Girl" And it was absolutely perfect. Now I don't think I could ever shoot at a crow. I see in England there is a lot of rabbit shooting going on.

@@lewismaker895 Nice to hear back too. I must admit guns have never been of great interest to me, though I had an air rifle as a boy, until, when I was about 15, I got a book from the library about longbows - making, shooting and history, and saw the light. (Longbow here of course means the wooden ELB, the other sort are called flatbows.) Here, I believe, there are a few sorts of gun hunting, people rough shoot over farmland or moors after rabbits, or appropriate birds. Also there are big commercial shoots where a large estate rears pheasant, grouse etc for people to pay to shoot (shotguns of course), and, in the highlands of Scotland, a similar setup for deer (rifles in that case, naturally). It is said that bow hunting became illegal here because the MP who was going to support was absent when the crucial decision was made.. I don't know if it's true. I can still shoot (though have to pause for breath a lot), it's the walking that's the problem. No chance of getting round a field course, even walking down to a target to collect arrows on a flat field can leave me gasping for breath. Do you still manage any archery?
@lewismaker8953 жыл бұрын
@@johnminnitt8101 I have a 20yd back yard range. And that's about it. Almost 20 years ago I sold off about 60 bows in my collection. But I still have about 30. Also I have about 25 compound bows, old ones.One is the Fred Bear "Vortex", which was at the time the fastest compound bow there was. Supposed to be worth something today. But it's so heavy, Like an outboard motor heavy.
