I love how much of a stealth car this will be. Once it has been mufflered, you can cruise around town and only the most observant people will notice anything different about a little silver Honda buzzing around rural Kansas.

I have a bone-stock 2000 Honda Insight 5-speed in that same silver color. It has 340,000 miles and I just returned from a trip to Huntsville, AL from my home in Virginia. 582 miles each way with a trip fuel mileage average of 56.4 mpg. Cost me $58 in gas for the round-trip! I love my insight and it's my daily driver.

Amazing, have you had to do anything to the engine (aside from servicing) in that time? Do the batteries still work ok?
@sambateman8097
@sambateman8097 7 ай бұрын
The battery pack was replaced at approx. 295,000 miles by the previous owner. I replaced the clutch at 300,000 miles and replaced the rear springs with stiffer ones and new rear shocks. And the tires were replaced with Vredestein 185 profile because I like to actually have some grip when cornering. On a previous trip to Huntsville and back last Fall I averaged 63 mpg. All at interstate speeds. It's amazing to be doing 70 mph and look at the tach and be turning 2,500 rpm. That fifth gear is a monster ratio!

For the muffler, try to study the “Helmholtz” principle. You may get away with just a certain sized hole at a certain place to get the resonance out of the system. The engine then can breath freely and there are no restrictions
@CableWrestler
@CableWrestler 7 ай бұрын
Another way is to weld a tee on to the exhaust, with a closed ended pipe which is at half the resonant frequency. It sounds odd and pointless, but bare with me... I couldn't see the RPM gauge so I can't calculate it :- a closed ended pipe resonates at twice the frequency of an open ended. So where you can hear it's quite loud and raspy when going through the rev range, you'd basically divide the rpm/3, for 3 cylinders, and then you'd have a number. You use that number to find out the wavelength in feet and inches (or CM for us metric bods), then half that number because a closed ended pipe would effectively double it, as mentioned above. The pipe doesn't have to be straight, it can be curved. Or just get a glass pack and embrace the diesel tunes.
@WILDouglash
@WILDouglash 7 ай бұрын
@@CableWrestlerI second that idea about a hole a the right spot. A scooter might not be a great comparison but a second hole a couple inches down from the end and it didn't sound like a weed eater anymore. It also ended up a tad quicker by seat of the pants method plus gps speed apps.
@midianvanhattem
@midianvanhattem 7 ай бұрын
@@CableWrestlerthat is indeed the helmholtz resonator! It would be fun to see at wich rpm the engine resonates the most. As far as I can hear, it resonates at 2 harmonic frequencies.

I always liked the first generation Insite. I imagine the car could do 45-50 MPG in current configuration. Looking forward to finding out what the actual mileage is. I have an 49 International KB1 1/2 ton pickup that needs a repower. I thought about a Mercedes OM616 or maybe OM617 diesel because I've owned a few, they have mechanical fuel injection, are readily available and very reliable. Unfortunately these Mercedes diesels have their power at the higher RPM range so not ideal for a farm truck. Thank you for the video, keep up the good work!

The first gen Insight is goofy looking, but is an awesome car. I'm told with the gasoline engine then can get as high as 70 MPG. From our Saturn experiments we expect something near 60 MPG with the diesel with normal driving. We will also try hypermileing and see how much it can get in extreme economy driving. The Saturn was able to get 80 MPG so this car should do about the same or a little bit better.
