We run aircraft engines lean all the time, its called Lean of Peak (LOP). It's the most efficient operating point, but you have to transition from rich (continue to lean) through peak EGT which has to be done carefully (quickly) else you can damage the engine. EGTs and CHTs both fall off in that realm. We don't do it for high power settings though, that's always full rich for detonation avoidance. The take away is a truly lean setting is actually cooler and more efficient, that's why that excess boost brings down Temps in diesel, your staying in the lean of Peak realm. Diesel thermodynamics aren't so far off from Gasoline as folks think, boils down to mixtures mostly

It's chemically correct at 14.7 to 1 Peak egt is around 14.2 to 1. It makes the most power at 13 to 1. It blows black smoke past 10 to 1 A diesel will run at 30 + to 1. It will run efficiently around 28 - 25 to 1. It will run hard 25 - 20 to 1. Getting a bit smokey. It will run harder at 18 to 1. Lower quality engines will start to shed parts. Starting to roll coal. 15 to 1. Runs so hard you will have to have a beefy engine to handle the forces. Also a gas mask, and a way to see through thick black soot. 14 to 1. Peak egt. Everything past the exhaust manifold melted two steps ago anyway. But it still isn't quite chemically "rich". Diesels use turbos in an effort to burn the required amount of fuel at the highest avaliable Air fuel ratio, to lower soot. Its essentially soot burning in the exhaust gasses that cause the egts to get to critical levels before you get to the fuels chemically correct, or full power air fuel ratios.

Jimbo! 2 things buddy: a). That boost hose is nice and cheap but any amount of heat will cause it to deform, twist and eventually stop allowing airflow (has happened to me) b). A restrictor pill inline on that hose will dampen the needle on that gauge and smooth out the reading :)

Just a heads up, pumps in general draw MORE power when they aren’t restricted because that means their mass flow rate goes up and the do more work. That is to say bypassing air in your diesel has a strong chance of making your fuel economy worse. Additionally you say adding air to a diesel without adding fuel doesn’t add power and that is not strictly true. Adding air increases the effective compression ratio of the engine. Higher compression means higher efficiency, means more power from the same fuel. Of course with your governor it may likely just defuel to maintain the same power.
@JCGver5 ай бұрын
This is a fixed displacement pump (roots style), so it in theory will always flow the same volumet of air for a given RPM, the amount of work it cost to move that set volume is pretty much directly connected to the pressure differential from inlet to outlet.

That was quite a lot of effort for not a huge gain, but it's still progress. And yes, I realise this is just a stepping stone to the next modification. Like everything, engine modification for a specific goal (economy, performance, outright power, whatever that goal may be) like everything has a law of diminishing return. I'm reminded of the old motorsport adage "speed costs money, how fast do you want to go?" The trick I guess is find the sweet spot where both the goal and the cost objectives are both realised, within the bounds of sense. This marvellous little project hasn't begun costing silly amounts, and I suspect it never will, because the priority is to do it as cheaply as possible. As many have already stated, this series of videos is more interesting that most of the big budget builds. I'm fascinated to see what Jim is going to do next. It's bloody brilliant.

Put one on a small displacement motorcycle. I have had some daydreams about trying an AMR500 on something like a KTM Duke 390 or Husqvarna Svartpillen 401 accept instead of driving the blower with the engine, my idea was to have it driven by the front wheel mounted on the front forks, then passed through a flexible pipe to the engine, at lower speeds in lower gears those bikes pull quite well, they show their lack of power once the speeds increase, the idea was to gear them up with a different front sprocket that raises the speed at redline in the higher gears and once the bike is moving that fast the front wheel is spinning the blower pushing in boost to increase the top end speed and power of the bike.
