If you're using mains electricity to electrolyze water at home and bottling the gasses, you might reduce the gasoline you're using but you'll be paying for electricity and the electrolysis equipment including consumables, plus dealing with pressurized hydrogen and oxygen. And either way you've got to deal with the potential problems hydrogen gas causes when it comes in contact with metal. Up here in Canada, when we get -30C/-22F on a regular basis, it's common to put a sheet of cardboard in front of your radiator. Even on full size vehicles it's hardly a concern. If it starts to overheat, you can always just pull it out.

My boss owns an interesting old pickup. 1982 Datsun 720 and it's powered by an SD22 Naturally aspirated diesel. Makes 62hp. I went through the cooling system with OEM components a year or so ago. If it's under 50°F out, we have a piece of cardboard that lives in the toolbox for this purpose. Driving around town when it's 10 below out, you have to block the entire radiator or you wont have heat. 😂😂 And yes, when I said cooling system, it got a new OE temp thermostat (180°F opening temp if memory serves correctly) it just doesn't make ANY heat 😂
@nerd1000ify Жыл бұрын
Most thermostats have a deliberate leak built into them to ensure that some coolant flows past the wax capsule. In super cold weather that can be enough to stop the engine reaching temperature! Radiator shutters should also reduce drag a little.
@goosenotmaverick1156 Жыл бұрын
@@nerd1000ify its actually how cold the coolant in the radiator has gotten to before the thermostat opens to allow coolant flow. It's very little to do with that weep hole, that is mostly to allow consistent operation and air bubbles to go past easily. Blocking the airflow to the radiator limits how much the coolant can cool while in the radiator.

For reference, in the same time frame the Insight was sold a popular European diesel econobox was the second generation FIAT Panda. The diesel version had a 1.3L common rail four cylinder with turbo and intercooler making 70hp, which could accelerate it from 0 to 100 km/h in 12.5s. Its mileage was good however not as extreme as the one of your car

Today in my neighborhood it's around 9deg F. My van really didn't want to go, and its fuel economy was way down from normal. I can understand how the weather really jacks around with your experiments.

We used to run strait glass packs on the V8s and they produce a nice deep rumble.

the blocking off of the radiator is common on big rigs in the winter. that’s a practical permanent fix for winter time use

Great Channel Hello from England. We have lots of small cars in Europe...lots of 3 and 4 cylinder small capacity diesels. From 75 to 100hp range. GM/fiat do a 1.3l 4 cylinder that's amazing on fuel and power. Holds up too

oh definately build a stand alone mount for the rad, fan those through the core mounts never end well

Pretty much all European Manufacturers started putting 1.3 or 1.4 N/A and Turbo-Diesels into their Sub-Compacts by the late 80s and early 90s. They all had about 45-50hp, 0-100kph in the 20s, Top Speed around 140-150 (90mph +/- 5) and rated Fuel Economy around 5-7l/100km (35-50mpg) however, in real life, people usually get no worse than 5l/100km and many get into the 3,xl/100km (mpg in the 60s). A mid 2000s-2010s Turbo-Diesel Compact or Sub-Compact gets 67-95hp, 0-100 in 11-15s, Top Speed 160+ (100+mph) and the same fuel economy.

I’d love to see some fiberglass wheelwell skirts added to the front. With the right profile to accommodate steering and some countersunk screws to make them removable when servicing the wheels, I could see another 10-15 mpg gain.

@budyeddi5814 a rebuilt 1983 Mercedes om617a. Adapted to the ranger 5 speed. And updated the turbo to a holset he221w from a euro 3.5 cummins. Sounds like a jet engine haha. Is it fast no is it powerful also no.. do I feel 10 feet tall with that whistle yes haha

Love yorchannel! A supercharger will only make your milage worse.. It will just add more friction, ofcuorce you will get better accelaration due to forced induction. But if a Exhaust turbo is added you will take advantage of what will be lost energy from heat coming from the engine, both combustion and friction heat will be rcovered in a Turbo Maybe you can combine these two systems?, Supecharger/Roots for instant power, and a cluch or something to disingage when the turbo gets up to pressure? This is the way someMedium two stroke ship engines work Regards from cold Norway!

All your admonishments about your slow project cars apply to the Japanese Domestic Kei cars that are fairly common, at least where I live. They look fun, but every hill is a challenge and just getting off the island on a 50mph road would be pushing these to the limits. Good to keep the realities in mind when thinking about stuff like this.

You might find that if you have the heater hooked up and turn it on the engine temp will drop. Driving a TDi Jetta in Northern Alberta taught me a thing or two about how little heat diesels put out. At -30 to -40C with the grill blocked off, full heat, and full heater fan would make the engine temp dip as soon as I pulled off the highway.

Me and my dad used to ponder what kind of fuel mileage could be achieved with the tiniest car we could find with the 3 cylinder diesel engine out of our ford 1210 tractor that makes 16 horsepower but will run sun up, to sun down on its 5 gallon fuel tank with couple gallons to spare. This set up you built here is pretty close to what we were pondering

Choke cable and some slide vents in the radiator barrier like the old shutters trucks and other heavy equipment used for temp regulation?

Right now its unseasonably cold, I'm more or less waiting until the weather to stabilizes before I start fiddling with the cooling system. I would prefer to keep things a simple as possible. Last winter we had the same problems with the Saturn and by the time summer rolled around, we discovered the Saturn would run hot with any obstruction in front of the radiator.
