My late husband David Querido was a 1986 intake. He was extremely proud of his insignia, his training and his country. Not sure what company he was in, but he loved every minute of it and spoke fondly of the ups and downs until his passing

July 1979 intake at 6SAI and transferred to 11 Commando. When we arrived there, they'd all left for the Border. The base then became a training base for Intelligence and Burgersake. My sergeant was Charlie Laubsher who later became Sgt Maj of the Army. I remember RSM Blignaut and our Coy CO Maj Bat Nel. I cleared out in Jul 1981.

The SADF was stronger than the Rhodesian Army because it was far larger. The Rhodesians were far more experienced in combat. The SAS was mainly Rhodesians, but had some foreigners including a few South Africans. The RLI did have a lot of South Africans. The RLI was a para-trained regular infantry regiment. The SAS and Selous Scouts were Special Forces. RMY

I was a medic at SAINTS from Nov '85 to early '87. Was there the day that the Samil overturned just before the main gate. One of the worst days of my life. Other than that, I enjoyed it to have been in such a prestigous unit. My favorite PF was S/Major Kevin Ridden. Spoke to him on Facebook a couple of years ago.

Those early days in the Mag where you didn't have a clue, just got pushed from one bewildering happening to the other. The blankets on the tables... MAGS NOMMER! Every 5 minutes: 8662_ _ _ _BG... I'll never forget that number. One second you were so lonely, the next second there were too many people around you. And first phase Basics hadn't even started yet.

I was there in 87/88 and getting flashbacks.i was in Foxtrot Co in the visblikke outside the mess.Foxtrot were all the communists from Durban.Then Law Officers course and up to SWA for 18 months. An experience I wouldnt want to repeat but did learn some valuable lessons despite the shit.

Interestingly, a Young Gary Teichmann appears at 7;24 in this video. I wonder if he aspired to be captain of the Springbok Rugby team at this stage of his life? I was in the January 1987 intake. Foxtrot 2 with Cpl. van den Berg. Although training was tough and I would not want to go through it again. I really enjoyed my time in the SA Army. I wouldn't change my experiences there for anything.

Looks like fun but it was PURE hell Was a savage time Run all day and March in the rain at night I regret not doing better in hindsight but as an 18 year old I just didn’t get it Did my 2 years and did patrols along the Ruacana river. I still have no idea what the point was. Probably I’ll never know. It was chaos….senseless I really didn’t like it at all. I still climb under my bed if there’s loud bangs in my area. 🤷

Genuine question. I spent several years in SA as a child in the 1970s. We lived in the Cape. I only every heard English spoken, and at school everything was in English. I notice in most documentaries about the SADF the main language is Afrikaans. What would happen if you turned up for your National Service unable to speak Afrikaans?

Believe you me, even those that did NOT understand Afrikaans at all, learned very quickly. There was a chap from Kenya in our Company - very much soldier material (fit & intelligent) - had never even heard of the Afrikaans language before - he passed his basics with flying colours & took the JLs course - he finished his 2 years as a 2Lt, VERY fluent in Afrikaans!

@@dissdad8744 Sir I see your pain but remember the persons depicted in this video did not defend White South Africa, they defended South Africa. Many of them did not agree with the policies but were dedicated to safeguard a land they called home. Just for the record many Black South Africans also served in the SADF (prior 1994) out of their own free will where White South Africans were legally compelled to complete National Service.
