Great video! I’m restoring my fiance’s 74 Sonett III and am FINALLY close to starting it. This has given me some much needed hope that it will. Fun engine to work on especially once you get the front off and have a ton of room to work. Looking forward to more vids!

Best of luck with it! I've started editing the third Sonett video so stay tuned

The place you have the supports that keep the front lifted up is not the best one from a structural point of view. There is a reinforced beam a bit further back that can be used. You'll find it described in the Sonett appendix of the workshop manual. You did the only right thing to do with the heads, thumbs up! Pitty you didn't open up the exhaust holes where the head mates with the exhaust. Because of the Siamese twin setup of the exhaust ports this is a restrictive area when it comes down to the exit of the exhaust fumes; this in combination with the diameter of the exhaust of course.

Concerning valve play, you said in previous video the engine is tuned? If so, for sporty cams go up with the valve play to 0.5mm inlet and 0.5-0.6mm outlet .

At this point i think that claim was mostly BS. The only thing non-stock that I've found is the front half of the exhaust. It even has the stock Fomoco carb.

@@SealedBeamRallyTeam It looks like it's missing a whole bunch of stuff around the carb... there's supposed to be an intermediate plate between the carb and the intake manifold that's got a whole bunch of smog bullshit on it. Just getting rid of that and doing a custom exhaust is almost enough to qualify as "tuned."

@@noiwonttellyoumyname.4385 I removed the deceleration valve. Right now planning how I'm going to run pcv stuff before the car gets driven in earnest.

@@SealedBeamRallyTeam Are you definitely sticking with the carb? I had my fill of carbs and points back a few decades ago when I had my *first* Sonett, and I'm looking at EFI options for the current project.

Hello, Wondering if you recall approximate cost of head work with the new valves? Thanks
@SealedBeamRallyTeam2 жыл бұрын
I think it was around $700. If I did it again i probably would have skipped that part, even though it's nice to not worry about valve seats. Some carb cleaner, penetrating oil, and patience would have gotten the valve free eventually.

Ever thought of taking the whole front off so you don't have to lean over it into that tiny hole?
@SealedBeamRallyTeam4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it wouldn't make that much of a difference in accessing anything for this job. Will be necessary for heater/blower stuff though.
