Another detail, at 4:40 the British ship firing looked to be a heavy cruiser, it had maybe 8 inch guns give or take. Don’t think those could’ve done much against the main belt armor, but as seen a second later could definitely do something to the conning tower.

@@cristiaolson7327 The problem is most history courses don't focus on battles. The main ones to pay attention to are the same ones always portrayed in media: -Pearl Harbor -D-Day -Stalingrad They mostly focus on the overviews of why these wars happened vs how the armies and navies got to that point. Standardized testing practically has killed this possibility. I would 100% guarantee that interest in history would shoot up if it wasn't treated as "useless" or as a list of facts.

The first battle you watched was JUST after Hood had blown up. Bismarck and HMS Prince of Wales are exchanging fire. If you watch closely, the next shot of Bismarck shows that he is down by the bow. This is historically accurate because Prince of Wales scored a hit on Bismarck's fuel tanks in the bow. He was leaking oil and took on a few thousand tons of sea water.

It was thought for 60 years that the Bismark being scuddled was just a German invention to make up for a defeat. Then expeditions to the Bismark's wreck revealed, astonishingly, that the British did not cause enough damage to sink him. They were only able to damage the superstructure. Neither the shell hits or the torpedoes did the behemoth in. It could only have been the Bismark's crew flooding him on purpose.

That's why I love Sabaton. I've learned more about WWI from them than I ever did in school. History would have been amazing if the teacher had come in played a song like Bismark and said. The Bismarck's death was also very long and drawn out. The Royal Navy was harassing Bismarck constantly with destroyers, leading to fatigue among the crew. I learned more about history from Sabaton than I did in school. I think it's really great that the band doesn't just make music. She takes the time to explain everything and work on the historical facts. Especially her collaboration with Indy Neidell is really good. Which is really a good historian. The story behind "No Bullets Fly" brings tears to my eyes again and again.

Didn't see it in the comments, so just want to point out - the old fishing trawler captain in the vid is the last survivor of the Bismarck, Bernhard Heuer, who died shortly after filming. The young German sailor you see being handed the compass from Lutjens (I think) is supposed to represent Heuer.

Heuer died over a year before the video was released, I've read somewhere (as well as here in the comments) that it's actually Heuer's son. Comparing the trawler's captain to pictures of Heuer also doesn't add up, to be honest.

Sir, this is a part most missed. On 8:43 you can see the Bismarck’s bow submerged. The reason is why during the battle against Hood and Prince of Wales, a few hits from the Prince of Wales hit the Bismarck’s bow causing it to flood.

Yes Bismarck is definitely my favourite Sabaton song. Few notes: Prince of Wales was very heavily damaged by Bismarck (during the Battle of the Denmark Strait) as well as Hood being sunk. Prince of Wales had a lot of her engineers on board at the time because she was having issues with her turrets and guns, which heavily affected her battle effectiveness. Therefore it was actually Rodney, King George V, Norfolk and Dorsetshire who worked together in the Bismarck’s last stand. In the video they show a Town/Crown Colony class cruiser engaging Bismarck, however the only cruisers who came into contact with the Bismarck was the Norfolk and Suffolk shadowing her and then the Dorsetshire fighting her later on. So they got that wrong. But everything else was perfect and it’s an amazing song!
@Wanys123
@Wanys123 3 жыл бұрын
The video is made by WarGaming, using models from their game World of Warships. At the time the video was made, no British heavy cruiser was in the game. As of now, they have Surrey(which was supposed to be the third Norfolk subclass County, first two being Norfolk and Dorsetshire, so they would have used that) and London+Devonshire (which could substitute for Suffolk). They went with what they had at the time. You could argue HMS Sheffield and HMS Southampton were present in the chase, however neither of them participated in the final battle iirc. Funnily enough, HMS Ark Royal was shown for the first time in this clip, making its way into the game only around month later, around anniversary of Battle of Denmark Strait/Sinking of Bismarck.

04:18 the British fleet did not "take it down" They damaged the rudder yes, Bismarck could only go in circles and it was too much of a job to repair while under heavy bombardment. They have investigated the wreck of Bismarck and even when under #"¤#¤ amount of bombardment from the British fleet, only 2 penetrations was found, way above the waterline where the armor was much weaker than where the pen needed to be to create a problem. They also discovered that ALL torpedo walls on the Bismarck were UNDAMAGED which means none of the "direct hit" torpedoes did any damage that would have sunk Bismarck. The surviving crew always said that they placed charges on the inside to prevent the ship falling into enemy hands and the investigation of the wreck show that they were telling the truth all this time.....If 1 hour of that heavy bombardment, including the 406mm!!!!! cannons from HMS Rodney only did that little damage I wonder how long it would have taken if the crew themselves had not sunk it...3 more hours? return to port to get more ammo and return to bombard Bismarck? or perhaps board it? Had they rudder not been hit im pretty sure Bismarck would have escaped to lose another day :o

Fun bit of info on this: Wargaming, the gaming company, provided a huge chunk of the special effects and sounds used in this video. They're from the game "World of Warships" however they went with a very basic color scheme for the Bismarck instead of the yellow-topped turrets Bismarck actually showed. The sound of the cannons firing is directly from the game, and I believe from the Bismarck itself. This video was also a backhanded preview of HMS Ark Royal that Wargaming snuck in before releasing it as a premium ship.

The reason for that is actually quite funny : the motor-assisted turret rotation mechanisms on the AA guns of the Bismark were too fast for the evasive maneuvers of the Swordfish, while the manual rotation mechanisms were too slow. And the shots that did hit would just pass through without exploding due to the fabric-covered frame of the Swordfish. Ironically, it was the Swordfish's obsolescence that saved it. Well, that, and it was super versatile. That as well.
