There is a movie about this, it is called Joyeux Noel which was released in 2005 (2006 in the USA). It shows the perspective of the christmas truce from the perspective of the French, Scottish and German soldiers along the western front, and the difficulties of having to turn their guns back on each other once the holidays were over, leading to a lot of high level commanders forcing units to change positions or even removing front line commanders because of what happened.

I can recommend it, it's very well worth watching. They got one thing wrong though. The fighting was forced through by artillery and propaganda after the truce. As it always is.
@tommiturmiola36822 жыл бұрын
@@michaelmay5453 Other measures were also taken as the Christmas Truce came close to ending the war: Troops had to be made to hate the enemy so they would not hesitate to shoot at the enemy. One way was the propaganda. Other way was to send troops to raid enemy trenches. Now there is a sure fire way to tell if the troops did actualy raid the trenches or did they just slack off. Successfull raid means captured enemy soldiers. Unsuccessfull raid means casualties. I was going to mention this after the christmas but since there was a thread about the subject...

Guys, this event happened in 1914. Two things: 1) There was a German commander who ended up moving his unit to another section of the front line, when his men refused to shoot the men they had made friends with the day before. 2) The cross actually exists near Ypres, Belgium, where the Christmas Truce actually happened. Merry Christmas, guys! I hope you have a lovely holiday with your family, and hope you are safe through the New Year! Make 2022 a metal year!

These men came together because they each were longing for home sitting in the frozen mud and snow covered trenches surrounded by their dead comrades. While "enemies" they had more in common with each other than they did with their leaders or Generals. Many of these men were punished by being transferred to more dangerous areas and as you can imagine very few who did partake in this survived the next 4 years of carnage. This never happened again, this is a soldiers truce one done by the men themselves fed up and loning for home. They got to show their humanity to one another, courage that their General and leaders who sat far behind the trenches never could demonstrate. As a vet this is also a song of Remembrance for all those who never make it home from any war and those left with their memories as the only thing to hold onto during the Holiday seasons. Sabaton once again bring history to life with the people who experienced this event and not the notes from a dusty history book. Floor is singing the Aria during the credits and the Valkyrie Goddess collects the fallen and bring them home to rest. A great lesson that we never learn, that we can set aside differences and let our humanity unite us even if it for a short period of time.

I read an autobiography of a surgeon who was there with the British forces. The senior officers on both sides that were involved met each other and made an agreement that if either side were start to commence firing again a warning volley would be fired into the air and a few minutes would be given for the men to return to the relative safety of the trenches.

The Christmas Truce is a part of British and German history. Where I come from in England our county ( State) had it's own Regiment in WW1. The Hertfordshire Regiment was in France from 1914 and the 1st Battalion of the Hertfordshire Regiment was in No Man's Land on Christmas day with German Troops, drinking, exchanging gifts, singing and getting to know each other at the Christmas Day Truce in 1914. One of the other British Regiment in the Christmas Day Truce was the London Irish Regiment who played football with German soldiers, the London Irish Regiment is still part of the British Army today. They have a museum at there Barack's in London where the actual football that was used on that incredible day in 1914 is kept. As I come from the county of Hertfordshire and that my favourite Rugby Union club has close relationship with the London Irish Regiment, this song by the greatest band in the world called the Christmas Truce is close to my heart, and to the people of the UK and Germany. The French Army and the Belgium Army had no intention of joining in with the Christmas Truce, as the Germans invaded their country's so the Germans were hated. It was only the British and the Germans that met on No Man's Land for the Christmas Day Truce. 💂♂️💂♂️💂♂️💂♂️🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🇬🇧🏴🏴🏴🏴

An unofficial truce took place on Christmas Day in 1914 between British and German forces in the Ypres Forrest in Belgium. Both sides left their trenches and entered no man’s land, where they met, shared food, drink and sang carols. As I said it was an unofficial truce, and orders were issued by both sides on December 26,1914, to never attempt such a truce again. Also, this was just before both sides began heavy use of machine guns and poison gas, so mistrust and brutality ramped up quickly on both sides. There has never again been a recorded truce for Christmas.

These people were aware that they were not facing enemies, but only soldiers who all did not want to be there to do what the respective government wanted. For me personally, this event shows that no politician should have the power to start wars. It cannot be that a handful of power-hungry men and women have to decide on the life and death of millions and millions of people and all have to follow it. And these politicians sit in their armchairs and watch the carnage as they send the lambs to the slaughterhouse. One should question whether one should not introduce psychological tests for people who want to go into politics. But the bigger madness for me is that these millions still let it happen to them instead of taking action against the handful. And for what? For money and recourcen.

By the way, the cross that appears in the video recreates one that is located in Ypres (Belgium) near the place where the Christmas Truce took place. In fact, UEFA in 2014 on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of that event made an emotional tribute.

Well, yes friends, the "Christmas Truce" did happen, it was a truce not agreed upon, rather it all happened because of the mother of coincidences. From the night of December 23 the German soldiers sang Christmas carols and proceeded to rudimentary decorate little trees that they placed in their trenches. The English when listening to the German Christmas carols responded by singing their Christmas carols, and thus a German soldier (perhaps because of the emotion of the moment) came out unarmed, this aroused the alarm of the English and French, but when they saw that he was disarmed they let him continue. When the German soldier arrived near the English positions, he shouted "Merry Christmas" in German and finished by saying "Come, we promise you that we will not shoot" and thus the truce was given which lasted on December 24 and 25, 1914, where the soldiers not only played soccer but also buried the dead in No Man's Land and held religious services. They themselves agreed to end the truce on the 26th. Sabaton did sovereign work and a beautiful Christmas card. Merry Christmas friends an arm from Venezuela.

There are a few movies about this, however, I think a big reason there have been so few takes on this event is the pressure to not fuck up. At least in Europe this event is taught in schools in a very reverent way. I didn't really catch on to how amazing this was in school though. Too immature.
@athlonen2 жыл бұрын
The reason this event is relatively unknown here in the US even though we are taught about World War I is because we didn't enter the war until 1917. This event took place 3 years before the Germans sank the Lusitania, which brought us into the war. By then the Russians also had left the war, because the Bolshevik Revolution happened also in 1917. As for Europe, it definitely is huge because they were involved in all of it (obviously). We in the US are genuinely naive about it because it hadn't directly concerned us at that time.
@earendilthemariner55462 жыл бұрын
@@athlonen we also didnt lose as much as europeans did. Millions dead, countryside ruined, etc. Also, the Lusitania didnt get us into the war (it increased support for the war but was not why we went to war). Americans died on it sure, but it was a british ship. Unrestricted sub warfare plus the zimmerman telegram is what did it People were seen as cowards if they didnt join (white feather campaign) and thought they were going to get glory.
