In case you were'nt aware, this storyline is based on an actual event during WW1 when British and Germans forces stopped fighting for a few hours on Christmas day and met in no mans land to play soccer and sing Christmas songs together before going back to their own lines and begin fighting each other again.

The cross is a copy of the one erected in the city of Ypres to commemorate the 1914 XMas truce on the western front. Also, if you happen to visit Liverpool, a small monument represents a british and a german soldier shaking hands above a soccer ball, as a remembrance of the XMas truce.

Great reaction. There are so many epic things about this song: 1. Band members plays soldiers of opposite armies 2. Joakim plays piano 3. "Carol of the Bells" 4. Great topic and great lirics 5. Guitar solo on acoustic Guitar 6. Pär visiting the cross 7. Floor Jansen singing in outro (8. Floor is Hannes' wife - Hannes is the blonde guy who were hurt by granade in the beginning)

This makes me cry every time. In the 100 years after the "War to End All Wars" finished, my country sent troops to fight abroad every single year, so Pär carving 2021 on the cross hit me hard. "Lest we forget" comes from Kipling's poem _Recessional_ which was written for Queen Victoria's diamond jubilee, but unlike others it was not a celebration of Empire but a warning.

There's this film called Joyeux Noël (2005) telling the story of this magical night of Christmas Truce. One of the most touching moments for me is when a cat from a nearby farm mingles with the soldiers, and it soon becomes clear that the same cat has been equally frequent visitor on both sides for weeks or months. The cat had gotten love and snacks from the Germans, the French and the Scotch, but was, of course, known by different name in all those trenches. I still keep thinking how much comfort and so much needed therapeutic warmth did this simple feline manage to provide to all the very young soldiers of both sides that had to die before that senseless conflict was over? Imho, that film is a tear jerk material for perfectly good reasons.

There is so much to explore in the world of SABATON. They are fans of war history and stories of bravery and sacrifice that most of us have never heard. Their albums focus on an era or theme of history, and each song has a true story behind it. I know you two will dig the story of The 'Night Witches', the first all female combat squadron of Russian women on the front lines of WW2. Or 'Bismark' the monstrous German battleship that everyone was trying to sink. 'No Bullets Fly' is a true story about a German fighter pilot told to shoot down a crippled Allied bomber. But, when he saw the poor condition of the aircraft and it's wounded crew, he just couldn't kill them. Against his orders, and the threat of a Court Martial, he escorted the damaged plane out to sea and safety. The two enemy pilots met years later, and hugged as brothers. Many years later, the bomber pilots grandson, listening to Sabaton, heard the song about his grandfather, and told his mother who then contacted Sabaton. They were invited as guests to a concert and met the band. They have a SABATON Music Channel kzbin.infofeatured and a SABATON HISTORY CHANNEL kzbin.info/www/bejne/goS4aHubmbeJfbs so if you want to know more about any song, go there to learn it's true story. They make history interesting and entertaining. Their videos are like mini-movies and their live shows are powerful. FLOOR JANSEN adds her amazing vocals to the end credits of 'Christmas Truce'. Once upon a time, NIGHTWISH and SABATON were on tour together and Floor met Hannes, their drummer (the blonde guy who gets blown up in the beginning). They were married, had a little girl and live on a country estate in the back woods of Sweden.

You were talking about how much thought and effort must have gone into creating this song. Here's a quote from Sabaton's website: “Christmas Truce was our highest priority when we decided to write songs about World War One. Not only was it the most requested topic from our fans, but it was, for us, the most emotional story from the war. This song took us years to create since we wanted the music to reflect the mood honestly. It was a big challenge, but we feel we managed to write a song that captures the spirit of this day, over a century ago.”

The men in many parts of the front had gotten along so well in the truce that they had to be forced at gun point to fight again. The men realized the germans were just regular men like them who just wanted to go home when the fighting was done win or lose.

The pope at the time made a request to a cease fire on Christmas. This is just one of the stories that each side laid down their guns and shared one day as mankind. The sad part is there were other fronts that weren't so peaceful. Soldiers just kept fighting. One side would make the attempt and the other side just open fired on them. The cross still stands as a reminder. Oh, the underlining piano melody is "12 Bells"
