The first minute ie the build-up is the Dominium Maris Baltici (Baltic Sea Dominion). It was the name given to Swedish and Danish strife for dominating the Baltic Sea in the Middle Ages. Somthing Gustav II Adolf (Lion From the North) was very much a part of.

Gustaf II Adolf is only 17 years old when he takes over the king's throne from his father Karl XI in 1611. But the great statesman Axel Oxenstierna by his side creates an efficient administration and a strong military force, a talented and strong-willed young man. Both are determined to make Sweden a power factor in Europe. The young king inherits three wars from his father. But Gustav II Adolf turns out to be both eloquent and learned field lord. After initial setbacks, the king soon puts victory after victory behind him. When the war against Denmark, Russia and Poland is won, he turns his sights on Germany. A bloody war between Catholics and Protestants continues there - a conflict that will later be named the Thirty Years' War. On the German battlefields, Gustav II Adolf's ambition combined with religious and commercial goals. In order to win the hearts of the German people, the Swedish propaganda successfully exploits an old prophecy that one day a yellow lion will arrive from the north (Sweden) and help the righteous (Protestants) The lion will defeat the eagle and the evil empire (read: the German-Roman Catholics). Gustav II Adolf becomes in the propaganda der löwe aus mitternacht - "the lion from the north"
