The guttural, emotion-choked performance Joakim brings to some words is breathtaking. "Will our kingdom *fall apart",* "When our leaders lost their *heart",* "Years of war and *agony".* It's so stunning. And that bridge is stirring as hell. I can absolutely feel the misery and defiant loyalty in "A soldier from Sweden remembers the dead!". But the chorus completes it. "Broken dreams so grand..." - it stirs such tragic and valiant emotions. Bravo. Long live the King, long live Carolus _Rēx._

He was defeated by the Russian winter. He died in the winter during battle. If it wasn't an actual historical thing I would've thought it was a shakespearien tragedy. I'm British and I use to privately laugh at the name 'Swedish Empire' (In relation to Britain) but after reading up on history (specifically Gustavus Adolphus and Carolus) you realize that this country fought for years to become independent and then went around forging one of the most powerful empires in Europe. Carolus was a great leader and King. rip mr rex

You laughed at the mighty Swedish Empire? Well atleast you’re enlightened

Because England had really challenging enemies in it's history: native american tribes, african tribes, aborigens in Australia. The only oppnent that was in your league was France, but then you just allied them and problem solved. Sweden had to gain independence from Denmark. Then it was fighting with Fucking Russia, Poland-Lithuania, Denmark and some German states all alone for decades (something Great Britain never expierenced_ fighting multiple stronger enemies with no allies) and they did it. Made an Empire nearly encircling the Baltic with population of less than 5 milion. No offense to Great Britain, but you made your empire on uncivilized tribesmen.
@kylehager41136 жыл бұрын
Haradrim England had 3 main rivals in their history, Spain, France, and Germany. Spain as its main colonial rival for becoming a world superpower, France for over a thousand years as its historic rival, and Germany as an emerging superpower. "Why Friedrich the Great lost a war where main battle with Russias Imperial Army was a great defeat against Imperial Crown Prince Peter that don't even want to beat beautiful Prussian regent that he was deeply in love with for their beautiful discipline and uniform created dito (?) regiment/regement later that was easy beaten by his wife Katharinas Russian Regiments later in the history." I have an idea of what he is saying, but it still doesn't make any sense to me. Friedrich fought his main battles against Austria and France.

This is a true piece of Art. Sabaton really showed how this warrior king was a child, a mad man with nothing but his wars and at the same time not exactly evil. I actually feel really bad for Carl, he was no more as a child when he was crowned. While Henry the 8th was the word 'King' in the sense of a fatt bastard, Carl was the word 'King' in the sense of a great military ruler. He was a lonely child with nothing but himself, so he grew up to bring the world the only thing his own heart could ever long for and that was war. He may have been the end of his empire but he didn't deserve a death like that. We simply do not know enough today to say the last words about him. May the King at least rest in Vallhala.

He was no mad man, he was a warrior and a good king. He didn't start the war, Sweden was attacked. He raised a powerful army and nearly saved our home, hell if he hadn't we'd likely have lost much more than we did

300 years ago, Europe lost a great ruler that had a promising future that was ruined by fatal mistakes of his conquest, but managed to take a last stand and died in battle. Today, we lost another great ruler in history. Today, we lost a queen who did everything she can for the empire that she ruled for over 70 years. Lange Lieve Kungen! Long Live the Queen! This reminds of my Best King in medieval 2 total war. King Edward the Cursader of Scotland(in game title) His reign was peaceful for the fatherland with gold flowing into Scotland like water and he fought in the crusades forging a king for the pop and giving the land back to the pope. No other king was as kind and religious. He sent his two cardinals to spread Christ in the holy land getting it to 53 percent. He died after sailing back for Scotland after our log term ally England betrayed us and attacked York. He died on the shore of Britain making it home after 6 years of fighting in the crusades. After that everything went to shit and a heretic called sextus turned York against Scotland and we had to retake it and then the French went to war with us.

This song is slightly misleading, Carolus Rex died while inspecting a trench during a siege. He did, however, lead his men in battle directly. As did many Scandinavian kings including Gustavus Adolphus. If you look up the list of monarchs who died in battle, it feels like 1/3rd of the list is Scandinavians.

***** Except that attitude stooped, at least from the French kings, after Francis the 1rst (Francois premier) got captured at the battle of Pavie. He wasn't the only one who had to go through that, John the second (Jean II) had also been captured by the english in the midst of battle, and Phillipe Auguste almost suffered the same fate at the battle of Bouvines, against the germans and the british. So it is a really brave way of fighting, but the problem is that a ruler's courage can deprive his country of its leader, as happened to the swedish....

The true final age of Swedish glory. Sweden still exists, it survived but after Carolus' dead it would never truely live again. Just as the British Empire fell, Just as German ambition became twisted and dark, Sweden lost the man with such ambition, such strength, and such courage he fought with his soldiers at the front line. Like so many powers before and after Sweden's life was cut short by Russia, the land that took so much from the conqueres of the past.
