Honestly, imagine being a soldier in these times, being in a massive army going up a very obviously smaller swedish army. You'd be feeling insanely confident, right? Then imagine that smaller swedish army not holding ground, or taking up defensive positions (as any other army would), but simply start walking towards you. Steadily. Their drums beating. Advancing without pause. Imagine how terrifying it would be to see an army like that, not even pausing when you and your fellow soldiers release a volley into them. The swedes continuing to advance until you can see exactly how hardened in battle these men are. It'd be difficult not to waver at the sight of that.

This is a meaningless anecdote but I'm playing Mount and Blade: With Fire and Sword, and my Swedish units will often fight with 30 men against 150+ enemies left and still win. Often my single army can take out 3 or 4 enemy armies and whatever units they have stationed in their fort or city. And judging by the Swedish Army's actual service record during this history: that's not only not unusual, but should be expected.

Would probably be like going against a roman Legion. Those troops were trained to remain perfectly silent as they marched into battle. Imagine being a visigoth or Galian tribesmen shouting warcries while an uniterrupted wall of scutum (shields) and gladiuses (swords) marches toward you, releasing vollies of pilum (javelins) at your allies. All while your enemy is silent. Fecking badass.

"See the white in their eyes" doesn't refer to the eyes of the Caroleans. It refers to the aggressively offensive Carolean line infantry tactic - called Gå-På (Go-On) - of not firing until you could distinguish the facial features of the enemy, or "See the white in their eyes". This was a risky tactic for individual soldiers since you had to march straight into a flood of bullets, but if successful you could use powerful short range muskets with great destructive accuracy and defeat numerically superior armies.
@worldoftancraft7 жыл бұрын
It's not a reference to the famous order of Battle of Bunker Hill? «Don't fire until see white of their eyes». I am not a citizen of the US-of-A, figuratively speaking I'm a progeny of Peter-the-Great's infantry, but read about it a few things.
@scottskidmore85585 жыл бұрын
Plus the fear it put in the enemies eyes of the caroleans getting danger close to fire. Probably built up a serious rep there.
@LoudnessJP5 жыл бұрын
@@scottskidmore8558Yeah, an enemy that doesn't show fear when facing death will have that effect too. Sweden has a very long history of going the extra mile in regards to tactics that shock and instilled fear in the enemy forces, the Rus' vikings knew a thing or two about that
@Killzoneguy1175 жыл бұрын
I'm not an expert in 18th Century warfare, or even that particularly well read in the 18th Century (Ancient, Medieval and 20th Century are my personal areas of enjoyment), but I imagine the whole "whites of their eyes" order was a testament to the sheer discipline of whichever army was attempting to employ such a tactic. I imagine if you're attacking, advancing until you can "see the whites of their eyes" would be pretty difficult as the enemy would no doubt be firing on you at the same time. If you're unable to stop and return fire, you may be inclined to rout. Unless of course you have the necessary resolve to take the enemy's fire until you're in appropriate range. Similarly for defending, I suspect that if you're waiting for the enemy to come in range, you might be, out of fear and nervousness, be inclined to open fire. So if you're holding until the enemy's eyes are in range, its because you have the iron discipline to hold fire.

I never heard about Caroleans before listening to Sabaton, I also noticed they were the Swedish special soldiers in Civ 5. But such an impressive unit. Discipline above anything else. They would take the enemy fire, and continue on with such determination that it completely broke the morale of a numerically superior army. I even found battles where Sweden would lose less than 100 men while capturing or killing up to 20 000 Russians. That's battle of Thermopylae, but in the north.

Sieptium Charles XII actually had two nicknames given to him by people hearing about his accomplishments in France and England. Swedish when sung is very distinct and beautiful.. Swedish can be extremely expressive and epic when sung as well as spoken (eloquently). As for elves, a country that before christianity favored Freyr as their main deity of worship, the Swe royals, Ynglinga line of old Uppsala claimed to be descendants of Freyr. Which was often called Lord of the Elves, his home being Alfheim (elf-world) in mythology. Most likely just their legendary/semi--historical king Yngvi-Freyr of Uppsala that was later a deity after his death and worshipped by the Swedes for ages. Most altar ands sites of worship found in Sweden are Freyr-related. Just history for ya, unrelated to the song:) But yea, sounds a bit elvish.

Fun fact: The lyrics at 5:08 are from an old prayer called "Fader vår" (Our Father). Lyrics: Fader vår som som är i himmelen Helgat varde ditt namn Tillkomme ditt rike, ske din vilja Såsom i himmelen så ock uppå jorden ge oss bröd ock idag Och förlåt oss våran skuld Prayer: Fader vår som är i himmelen. Helgat varde ditt namn. Tillkomme ditt rike. Amen. The prayer roughly translated to: Our Father (God), who is in heaven(the sky), hollowed(sanctified) be your name, Thy kingdom come, thy will be done So as in heaven and so as upon earth, Give us bread today and pardon(forgive) our sin(debt). Additional notes: The word for heaven and the sky are the same in Swedish "Himmelen". The text doesn't specify sin (which is singular in the text and in the lyrics), but instead uses the word "skuld" which commonly translated to debt. The text is written in an old Swedish with grammar that is rarely if ever seen today, it is still understandable though. if you have any additional questions please do not hesitate to ask, I'm happy to answer to the best of my ability!

I've lost track of how many times I've listened to this song and I love the outro just as much as everyone else in the comments, but one detail just hit me like a sledgehammer: the Lord's Prayer cuts off at "Forgive us our trespasses," instead of continuing to, "as we forgive those who trespass against us." Listening to it that way, it sounds as if they're asking for God's forgiveness for what the Caroleans have done in His name rather than praising their mission. Just one tiny thing that changes the entire message...
@guest385810 жыл бұрын
what a song, its perfect in every way and it inspired many individuals like myself to do some research on the Caroleans and I must say, Swedish soldiers were without a doubt, the best soldiers of their time.

Many have been Caroleans, only one has been named as the last Caroleans. Also named as the Savior of Stockholm, when he led the troups to the final battle on Swedish soil + 300 years ago against the russians, sort of like 5:1, but won the battle with "Gå på". His name was Rutger Fuchs. . He had several earlier battle scars, and one of the ones i rank the most is, when he led his troops, and got into hand-to-hand combat with the danish royal commander in the fore of their troops. In the end Rutger got six cuts, the dane died, and in the end the swedish troops won.

you know, kinda what saddens me about this album is the intermingled themes. in this song you have the power of human belief. Belief in a cause, a religion, an empire. You have this belief that made these men powerful at that time. Then when you compare it to the other themes of the album, it combined with Lion from the north and gott mit uns you can feel this vitality and belief in a beautiful future. but you get carolus rex where you feel that it is being used not for the future for all but to really prop up only one man. you get killing ground and 1648 and you start to see the horror of this belief being used in this way. with lifetime at war you get that weariness as their blood and belief is being spent as the currency of empire, then with long live the king and ruina imperii you get this disillusionment along with despair at the loss of everything they fought for. I spent years thinking about ruina imperii, like what was it all worth? what could those men return home to? then I thought, they could return home and learn what it meant to grow old. that's what they could do, without the grand dream of empire those men had the opportunity to grow old and meet their grand children. sure the grand dream is dead, but they get to live instead and really was that grand dream, fueled by the blood of the men that dreamed it, ever really worth more than the blood spilled for it?
@robertharris60925 жыл бұрын
Prop up one man? Carlous rex saved Sweden from being deleted off the face of europe fighting single handedly against russia the polish lithuanian commonwealth and denmark among others like england. At the age of only 18 after ruling for only 3 years no less.
@wisemankugelmemicus17013 жыл бұрын
@@robertharris6092 It’s significantly more complicated than that…King Carolus did multiple times defeat more numerous and tactically superior foes, and many of those early foes resulted in the Swedish Empire being saved from defeats that could have been very fatal..but he then began to fall into the trap of many European conquerors, earlier than most because due to his young age, he never considered the importance of logistics and grand strategy, instead opting for brief, flashy victories. More experienced commanders lasted longer and outplayed Charles the Great because they understood the importance of economic warfare.

Been watching these videos all weekend, I like the way you add the narrative with the history. Nothing educates like a good bit of heavy metal, I learnt about Coleridge from Iron Maiden's "Mariner". Just thought I would say thank you for your efforts, perhaps there is hope for the youth of today not to repeat the mistakes of the past, which of course is the most important lesson history can teach. The swedish Life Guard is the world's oldest military regiment. There are many fascinating stories about their heroism and prowess in battle. One of the king's drabants saved the life of Karl XII on three occasions when only about forty drabants stood against thousands of Ottoman soldiers. His name is Axel Erik Roos and you can read about him in wikipedia.
