My great grandfather lived long enough to tell us about his time in WW1. He was a major in the German army. He told us "I gave orders to never fire on Christmas day. It was the only orders I never regretted". Everytime I hear this song. I can't help think of him. He gave up everything to get him and his family out of Germany in 1932. He seen what was coming. I could never thank him enough.

Interesting that you mention World of Tanks. Sabaton actually partnered with World of Tanks. They even have their own tank in the game I believe. The company that made the game (Wargaming) actually helped produce some of their music videos. For example: Primo Victoria (not a very good music video though) and Bismarck (amazing music video lol) and Steel commanders (pretty alright music video)
@suntiger7452 жыл бұрын
For a little context, the lyric video for Primo Victoria is fine. The CGI/Live footage of Primo Victoria that World of Tanks did with Sabaton is good visually, but the sound feels a bit off. They mixed in explosions and tank sounds with the music, and since it was the first such video they did, it was not the best mix. As Neox says, the sound mixing on the later World of Tanks/Warships collaboration on Bismarck and Steel Commanders are much better.

Sabaton has another song about enemies coming together that is even more improbable, "The Last Battle ". The story behind this song is totally amazing. It's about American troops and members of the German Wehrmacht fighting TOGETHER at the end of WW2... (To get the full experience of this song, you really should watch the Sabaton history video first though.) And by the way, their song 40:1 live from Woodstock is amazing too (as you are Polish, I'm sure you have heard the story that that song is about ...).

Yes, it is based on a true event. The one day unofficial cease fire on the western front , December 1914. Dominika is correct, that was Floor's husband, drummer Hannes Van Dahl. Afterward , a lot of troops involved were moved to other areas because they didn't want to fight their new friends. And the Generals and other officers did everything they could to make sure anything like this never happened again. You're right, they never learn. All you have to do is look to Ukraine today. This was filmed in the Czech republic by people who usually make movies. No movies being made when the world shut down, so they had time for this.
@saintcynicism26542 жыл бұрын
The length of the cease fire actually varied, due to the spontaneous and unofficial nature of it. Some of them were only hours long, others lasted all day, a few places it even lasted *several* days. Some were just meant to bury the dead and there wasn't much socializing, others were like their own strange little Christmas parties with soldiers exchanging food, gifts (buttons from their uniforms were a pretty common one), a few places had the barbers from one side or the other cutting everyone's hair (including the enemy's), there were the famous soccer/football matches, etc. But unfortunately, in the end they still went back to the killing and dying no matter how long the truce lasted.
@jean-francoispirenne65182 жыл бұрын
The cross shown in the video is a reproduction of the cross erected in Dixmuide in 1999 to commemorate the event. There is also a sculpture in Liverpool, displaying a british soldier and a german shaking hand above a football.

We have the "rolling" R in Swedish but Joakim deliberately exaggerates it when he sings in English. It has become his "style" or whatever. He doesn't sound like that when he just speaks in English. As some people probably have mentioned earlier Sabaton have a history channel which explains the story for each song in more detail. For this song: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gnvUZ2eae5qNnLM

@@jolandavanlankvelt2674 Is it sparsely used or only used in some specific dialects? I've never heard it in a Dutch conversation. I'd personally classify the Dutch "R" more as guttural (throaty) than rolling (tip of the tongue) and thus a little more similar to Danish than Swedish, Norwegian or Icelandic which have retained the old Norse pronunciation. Polish absolutely has a rolling R solely based on every time I've heard the word "kurwa" and so does for an example Italian but Dutch?

The subtitles are translating Swedish. Thus the slight difference in wording. It is a true story. Correct Dominika. That is Floor's husband Hannes. The next day they went back to fighting. However, both armies replaced their soldiers. They thought it would be very difficult for these men to fight to the death against each other after this event. Real human stories of tragedy and hope! Even in the worst situations our humanity can reach out through all of the madness. Yes, almost all of Sabaton's songs are about famous military events. This song (and event) really shows that the people fighting are just humans just like you. The enemy is told the same as you: "The enemy is evil", the moment this believe is broken, most people don't want to fight anymore. After the Christmas Truce both sides moved a lot of forces around because the soldiers refused to fight. Some soldiers got punished for refusing to fight. Propaganda is important in every war, to make people want to fight. Whether it was 200 years ago or 50 years from now, every war depends on propaganda on both sides.
