This gas was mix of chlorine and bromine, the chlorine mixed to moisture of the air turned into hydrochloric acid chemically burned the lungs of the soldiers but ALSO attach itself on the brass of gus and shells even the grass turned into a yellow bleck colored and the gas filled all the holes on the ground. Those soldiers when they attack had chemical burned red eyes tears bloddied scared faces from chemical burns and gasping for air in every step they coughing part of their destroyed lungs ( to have an image) and from the way those heroes emerge from trenches were more like zombies limbig their ways in the open. Subs of the Russian version are original lyrics. Radio Tapok have done a good job in translating them, because Russian and English are grammatically different. Russian has fewer words, but words are longer, which changes intonations rhythm and other. Besides there are traditions. So e.g. chorus in Russian, if translated literary is: "Osowiec, death, corpses, poison; the dead unit was charging; they were charging to win; What is dead cannot be killed.

Russian language have more words to discribe single action than english. So basicaly it hard to make same idea in song.

Radio Tapok's lyrics actually tone down the undeath theme and in general are pretty different from the original in that regard. The Germans launched the first attack in September 1914. Having installed guns of large caliber, they bombarded the fortress for six days. In January 1915, Major-General NA Brzhozovsky replaced him, who commanded the fortress until the end of the garrison's active operations in August 1915. The garrison consisted of one infantry regiment (the Land Regiment), two artillery divisions, a sapper unit and support units. In the arsenal of the garrison there were 200 guns of caliber from 57 to 203 mm. The infantry was armed with rifles, light and heavy machine guns. In September 1914, units of the 8th German Army approached the fortress - 40 infantry battalions, which almost immediately went into a massive attack. Already by September 21, 1914, having a multiple numerical superiority, the Germans managed to push back the field defense of Russian troops to the line that allowed the artillery shelling of the fortress. At the same time from Königsberg, the German command sent 60 cannons of caliber to 203 mm to the fortress. However, the shelling began only on September 26, 1914. Two days later the Germans attacked the fortress, but it was suppressed by the heavy fire of Russian artillery. The next day, the Russian troops conducted two flank counterattacks, which forced the Germans to stop firing and retreating in a hurry, diverting artillery. On February 3, 1915, the German troops undertook a second attempt to storm the fortress. A heavy, long battle ensued. Despite the fierce attacks, the Russian units held back. German artillery fired upon forts with the use of heavy siege weapons of caliber 100-420 mm. The fire was fired at volleys of 360 rounds, every four minutes - a volley. During the week of shelling, 200-250 thousand heavy weapons were fired at the fortress. Also, specially for the shelling of the fortress, the siege mortars "Skoda" of caliber 305 mm were transferred by the Germans to Osovets 4. From above the fortress was bombed by German airplanes. The General Staff command, believing that it requires the impossible, asked the garrison commander to hold out for at least 48 hours. The fortress survived for another six months ... Moreover, a number of siege weapons were destroyed by the fire of Russian batteries, including two "Big Bertha". After several mortars of the largest caliber were damaged, the German command withdrew these guns beyond the reach of defending the fortress. In early July 1915, under the command of Field Marshal von Hindenburg, German troops launched a large-scale offensive. Part of it was a new assault on the still unconquered fortress Osovets. The Germans began to arrange gas batteries in late July. It was installed 30 gas batteries in the number of several thousand cylinders. More than 10 days the Germans were waiting for a fair wind. Not having achieved success with artillery fire and numerous attacks, on August 6, 1915, at 4 o'clock in the morning, waiting for the right direction of the wind, the German units used poison gases consisting of chlorine and bromine compounds against the defenders of the fortress. The defenders of the fortress did not have gas masks ... As reported by V.S. Khmelkov, the gases released by the Germans on August 6, had a dark green color - it was chlorine with an admixture of bromine. The gas wave, which at the time of release about 3 km along the front, began to spread rapidly to the sides and, after 10 km, had already about 8 km wide; The height of the gas wave above the bridgehead was about 10-15 m. All the greenery in the fortress and in the nearest area along the path of the movement of the gases was destroyed, the leaves in the trees turned yellow, curled and fell, the grass turned black and fell to the ground, the petals flew. All the copper objects on the bridgehead of the fortress - parts of guns and shells, wash basins, tanks and the like - were covered with a thick green layer of chlorine oxide. Gases inflicted huge losses to the defenders of the Sosnenskaya position - the 9th, 10th and 11th companies of the Zemstvo Regiment were killed entirely, from the 12th company there were about 40 people with one machine gun; from the three mouths protecting Byalogronda, there were about 60 people with two machine guns. German artillery again opened a massive fire, and after the fire shaft and gas cloud, believing that the garrison defending the fortress positions is dead, the German units went on the offensive. The attack went to 14 battalions of the landwehr - and this is not less than seven thousand infantry. On the front line, after the gas attack, hardly more than a hundred defenders remained alive. The doomed fortress, it seemed, was already in German hands ... But when the German infantry approached the fortress's foremost fortifications, the remaining defenders of the first line, the remnants of the 13th Company of the 226th Infantry Zemlyachensky Regiment, slightly more than 60 men rose in a counter-attack. Counterattackers had a horrible appearance - with mutilated chemical burns wrapped in rags .. This attack of the "dead" plunged the enemy into such horror that the German infantrymen, not accepting the battle, rushed back, trampling each other and hanging on their own wire fences. And here on them, seemingly already lost Russian artillery began to beat on them ... Commandant Major Brzhozovsky left the deserted fortress last. He approached the group of sappers, located half a kilometer from the fortress. There was a painful silence. Having looked last at his exhausted but invincible fortress, Brzhozovsky himself turned the handle of the explosive device. There was a terrible rumble, fountains of earth alternating with bricks and pieces of reinforced concrete shot up into the sky. Osovets died, but he did not give up! This story was continued, after 9 years! In 1924, European newspapers wrote about a certain Russian soldier (his name remained unknown), discovered by the Polish authorities in the fortress Osovets. As it turned out, during the retreat, the sappers bombarded the underground fortress warehouses, with ammunition and foodstuffs, with directed explosions. When the Polish officers descended into the cellars, out of the darkness, in Russian: "Stop! Who goes? "The stranger turned out to be Russian. Carrying out his service in strict accordance with the military regulations, the sentry said that only his commander can remove him from his post, and if he does not, then the "Emperor". They explained to him that the country he had served had not existed for 9 years. Not losing track of time and having adapted to existence in the dark.
