To help understand it a bit more. Song is about Battle of Monte Cassino, on which stands the abby of St. Benedict. Capturing the abby was a cruicial task in breaking the Gustav Line of German defences. In breaking the German lines and capturing the abby, troops of many nations fought, Brits, French, Indians and ultimatly Poles, who captured the abby, following bloody day of combat, after which German troops abbandoned the abby. It should also be said, that likely no fighting for the abby would take place, if Allied command didn't convince themselves, that German troops were stationed in it, bombing it, which allowed Germans to actually occupy the ruins after the fact.
