When the Japanese diplomats met w the Russians before the war, they present the Russians with a map with Russian territory and claims marked in red and Japanese in blue trying to peacefully hash out an agreement on a border, the Russians sneered at this and replied, "If colors on a map determined the extent of borders then we could just paint the whole map red"

Yeah, that's par for the course for European attitudes of the time. Still, Arrogance of that nature deserves a good smackdown.

The only problem is that in that time (and even now if Europe wanted with almost every country except China and the USA) they had the power to have that attitude@@killman369547

Drachinifel made very entertaining videos about this voyage and the battle with Japanese. They are like 1 hour long podcasts with photographs and pictures, amazing to listen to while you're doing workouts or some chores.

Not just "Why would the Japanese go to the Baltic", but torpedo boats are not exactly long range ocean type vessels

6:55: Well, funny thing? After Doggerbank they also managed to shoot at a french schooner, a german fishing trawler and a swedish cargo ship. None of these diplomatic incidents resulted in much other than further humiliation because the French,Germans and Swedish did just accept a plain apology in each case. After all, none of their ships actually got hit or suffered any damage in these incidents.

Of course, the title for the original video is part of the joke...either intentionally or not...the saga of the Russian Baltic Fleet and the Russo Japanese War are pretty near the top of the list of stories that military historians talk about the most. Obviously, nothing gets to the level of a World War 2, but if you look at the volume of books about smaller wars, the Russo Japanese War has had a LOT written about it...and it features prominently in almost every history of Russia, of the Russian Revolution, and World War I that has ever been written. ✌😁

Yeah, a lot of people theorize that Russia's extra aggressiveness during WW1 was directly due to their loss in the Russo-Japanese war. The Russian's did not want to look like push-overs again.

I love how CG first makes the, regularly correct assumption, that they would travel through the Suez canal... And then... Things happen haha

Btw: japan purchased a lot of ships out of british naval yards, so there was a minor danger of encountering an actual japanese ship. But boiiiii.... hysteria

Anyone that wanted to not count trees didn't tell the Tsar what he needed to hear. Counting trees was the least that would happen. Note: Counting trees is the Russian way of saying, "Exiled to Siberia'" as the only entertainment there was to count trees.

The Japanese torpedo boats being next to Denmark and Britain wasn't THAT unrealistic actually. The Japanese were still getting their shipbuilding off the ground and bought a lot of their boats from British shipyards, and they would be crewed by British sailors until it was time to completely hand them off to Japan after transport. So, theoretically, Japan could have transported sailors to Britain to go ahead and get their boats faster.

4:25 At this time, Japan didn't have any territories in southeast Asia, particularly since the Western nations (the Netherlands, the United States, France, Great Britain) had colonies there at the time. Japan only established a strong presence in that area during WW2, through conquest.

I find this video you reacted to slightly distasteful since it is a plagiarism of Drachinifel's youtube video, '2nd Pacific Squadron Voyage of the Damned'.
