Nungesser is so much more : - he fled as a teenager to South America to compete in backyard boxing matches and street car races - Went back in 1914 willingly to enlist. He was no one special yet so sent to the infantry. In Alsace he broke through the lines, captured a German officer and went back to his own lines with the prisoner. That's when he was allowed to fly a plane. - His aviator carreer went on after the war. He actually attempted to cross the Atlantic before Lindbergh did, in the "Oiseau Blanc". He disappeared in that flight, also some Canadians from Acadia swear to have heard a plane engine at the approximate timing he should have reached the shoreline. A movie main caracter is actually directly inspired by him, played by Jean Paul Belmondo in the movie "L'As des As" (great movie if you speak French, hilarious one)

Also I can't help but mention the story of Georgios Kamperos,a Greek pilot who was the fist to ever bomb the enemy,I actually I believe the first to ever use an aircraft for military purposes. This happened at 1912 during the Balkan wars where he would take several gallons of petrol on his plane and literally throw them at Turkish formations and either lit then up or cause an exploration often hitting their ammo supplies. He would constantly do crazy maneuvers and thats why people often called him "trelokampero" or crazy Kamperos(an expression that still exists in the Greek language). He went on to make the first and most notable Greek flying school,along with the PM Venizelos,which also still exists and is the flying school the now best pilots of NATO have graduated from

It's common to admire people bravery and steadfastness in the face of peril. To look back on someone who took a beating and kept going, and think "What a guy!" But there is a limit to such things. Hearing about these pilots, I go from admiring them, to wishing someone had staged an intervention. This goes beyond bravery into self harm.
@merryrose6788 Жыл бұрын
Yes, such as it would have been great if someone had intervened before the Archduke was shot, or before the trenches were dug, someone to say, "This is not a good idea. People are going to suffer and die needlessly."

Well, Mata Hari was both famous at her lifetime, and after death. But yea, if it's after the fact it's not that bad, but then it's harder for proper historic records.

That is true, but sometimes successful spies run out of luck or make a mistake. Some spies are let down by traitors or by blunders on their own side. In Mati Hari's case, it was Major Arnold Kalle who by his actions betrayed her.

@fr89k4 жыл бұрын
I mean: Argentinians weren't in Verdun, but it's often underestimated (or at least I always underestimate) how many countries were at war in WWI and WWII. Well, it would be a pain in the ass to confirm that a pilot was actually dead, and with the fact that getting shot down wasn't guaranteed death, either
@xcritic96714 жыл бұрын
Well a kill on an armored vehicle only meant rendering it inoperable, or "not combat worthy", so no reason to assume the same isn't true for aircraft. At least in naval battles you can see the target sink, but otherwise confirming kills is a lot more difficult than just labelling them as a casualty.

very good video and exact history facts. The enines of the great-war-planes had been fueled with bio-alcohol. This öko-fuel was named potato-schnapps (Kartoffelschnaps). For 100 years ago, Germany had no mineral-oil so the used alcohol. Today in the debate of the climate crisis alcohol-fuel is back in discussion. If this agrarian alcohol is 100% Ethanol (no poison methanol) thinned with water, it also can fuel the pilots. You can drink the fuel.
