A little history about bodaboda: It all started in the border town of Busia. This is along the Kenya/Uganda border. So casual laborers used to help travelers and traders carry their luggage from one side of the border to the other. They would call this border to border. They used bicycles back in the day. The name got shortened to border-border(bodaboda). Eventually motorbikes replaced the bicycles and bodabodas became a mode of transport everywhere not just along the border

*HE SAVED YOUR BACON* At 29:06, the guy on the other bike says “jidkaas (couldn’t hear the next few words) lacagta ka gaad” which directly translates to “on that road… take the money”. Then Mo IMMEDIATELY turns the bike around and leaves. He saved you. But didn’t tell you their intentions. He obviously cares about and has loyalty to his friends (I get the feeling their not close, just neighbourhood boys). He can’t be seen standing up to his friends to protect some foreigners he just met, he has a connection with you that they can’t understand. So he just leaves situation. You see, Mo is in between many different worlds. He’s a Kenyan, a Somali, an American and global citizen. People from one walk of life (like yourself (sabbatical) and those boys that wanted to rob you) can’t understand each completely. Mo is understand each of your lives and is connected with you all, because he has literally lived life fro each of your perspectives and has real, genuine empathy for you all. Which is why he simply leaves without bothering to explain himself to you or his friends. You wouldn’t understand. Maybe I’m psychoanalysing too much, but he 100% saved you from being robbed a few times in this video.
