If you look at a map of South America very carefully, you'll notice a little country called Suriname in the top right corner. They don't speak Spanish there. They surprisingly speak Dutch, along with a ton of other languages. Gone are the Latin influences, instead you find touches of Indonesia, India, China, Holland and West Africa. It's a fascinating place, and I was going to start with the capital, Paramaribo, to get a better understanding of it.
Thankfully, there was plenty of food and Parbo beer waiting for me. But first, I had to learn Dutch - a sentence I never thought would escape my mouth.

My hair has never looked better. Hope you enjoyed this tour of Paramaribo as much as I did. If you're Surinamese/Dutch, I hope you also enjoyed me butchering your language. I'll try Sranan Tongo next 😉 PS. I made a mistake writing the price of the water bottle in the Chinese supermarket. It was supposed to be $0.70 if I remember correctly. I've gotten like 100 comments mentioning this so I just wanted to say, don't worry, they didn't scam me!

By all means try it! Sranan has tons of similarities to the pidgins and creoles of the Atlantic world... including West Africa (Ghana, Nigeria). It'll be fun.

Enjoyed the vlog. Just wanted to rectify, that Suriname was a dutch colony till 25 of november 1975. The slavery ended on the 1 July 1862, and after that all the labour contracors followed India, Indonesia and China. Funny thing is in Suriname we have black people with chinese names. Overall it was a pleasure meeting you and I hope you enjoy the rest of your visit.

When i was young i lived in Holland and had a Surinamese friend and his mother used to cook for me all the time. I was the only white kid in their house and they thought it was really funny that i was so obsessed with Surinamese food. Now i live in Eastern Europe and i still sometimes think about surinamese food...broodje pom, saoto soep, bloedworst, broodje bakkeljauw, and zoutvlees with bami were my favorite.

@@joraisasibendie6227 in Jamaica my favorite food was 'stew peas and rice' (BB met R or bruine bonen met rijst). When I lived in Guyana as a college student, I never saw it there. On my first visit to Suriname my future mother in law cooked that on the second day I visited. At that point I said yes, I will marry her daughter. Still married, but my Suriname wife is somehow more open to American low-cal, constant dieting cuisine. Fortunately for me I cook and my mother in law still gives me her recipes.

It is the obligation of all Africans to know where the slave trade took their ancestors. You can no go through life been so uninformed about the rest of the world. It is this stupid ignorance of the rest of the world that led to the horrible enslavement of the Africans.

Interesting Tommy, South Africa was once ruled by the Dutch and the language Afrikaans derives from the Dutch language with a mixture of German, English etc. I as a South African, born in Cape Town, met quite a few Dutch and I understand them when they speak their language. I like when you speak a language of the locals because they are impress and tend to respect and that creates a sense of respect towards you. Great man!

Fun fact: The country of Suriname is one of the most truly multicultural countries in the world due to the way that all these different cultures have mixed into a new society, and the only one that has a synagogue, a church and a mosque in its centre right next to one another! - If a Dutch speaker asks you if you're from Nederland see that as a compliment that your Dutch pronunctiation is very understandable. KEEP PRACTICING IT! We love it when someone tries to speak our language (Even when we reply in English)! Fun Fact 2: In Holland when we say - Ik ga naar de Chinees - we mean the Chinese restaurant. Obviously, in Suriname people would more likely think you're going grocery shopping due to alot of the grocery stores in Paramaribo! :P Lastly - Sranan Tongo is like a mixture between dutch and english, asian and african words so you might sometimes even understand sranan tongo (Dog = hond = dagu) Loved this video it brought me back to my stay in Suriname, you went to all the places with everyone - love the Suriname hospitality, I love to see more!
