So when I was studying animation at my university, our 3D ANIM professor had a few stock models for us to practice with and the model for Charlie was one of them. No textures, no fur, no context, I had no idea how to assess that creature and when I saw this video and looked Charlie in motion I felt like my third eye was forced open.

Layla switching personalities to like Romeo isn't surprising if you know Bollywood or Indian culture in general. Its difficult to portray independent women and is a very patriarchal system. Women need to be elegant, femminine and want the man. Always. The cat is an outsider surrounded by dogs, and is used for comedy only because a woman acting like that is literally *shocked pikachu face*. She's "different" and it's funny, and also why she's the only one in Romeos crew who gets nobody.

A woman can be soft, kind, caring, nurturing, and empathetic (and yes, a supportive follower of her male partner too), and still capable and assertive when she needs to be/when situations call for it. I just personally dislike the recent feminist trend in American media of portraying girls and women as hypermasculine "girl bosses" (often in a toxic way too) in order to be "relevant" in the eyes of everyone. Usually, they're just rude, tasteless, entitled, and obnoxious Karens. Now, this DOESN'T mean I think women should be total bimbos, doormats, pushovers or damsels in distress either (I hate those kinds too), there always has to be a balance between their masculine and feminine sides. Basically, I can't stand any extreme versions of any characters (regardless of their genders).

Actually it's a reference to people who know Indian tales since India's version of Romeo and Juliet is called Layla Majnu so they basically did a weird hybrid of it with the names. It's one of the many things in the movie that you'll get if you know the Indian culture xdd

If anyone wondering why layla isn't named as juliet it's because the indian version of romeo - juliet is called layla - majnu, the filmmakers decided to do a wierd hindi - English hybrid with their character's name hence romeo and layla.

The reason why the characters are switching between English and hindi is because of something called "code-switching". English/a second language that both listeners/speakers know is used to put emphasis on certain concepts. The reason why Romeo uses more English than the other characters is to look more rich/posh, since English is a pretty prestige language in india

"Intermission" or "interval" is a break typically in the middle of a movie so that the viewers can buy snacks and drinks. This happens in most Indian films. Also, Indian movie restrictions are pretty lax so many kids watch romantic movies with their parents. That's why there's so much _romance_ in the movie.

Here's how I would have done the story. Romeo comes from an average home. He enjoys his life with his old owner, but then, his owner sadly passes away. The owner's son wants to keep him, but his wife is allergic to dogs, so he decides to give Romeo up. Romeo decides to run away rather than being sent to the pound. Some dogcatchers start chasing him, so he ducks into a secret club run by other dogs and cats. Laila comes across him, but it's not love at first sight. He offers to work for her and her show if they'll give him shelter from the dogcatchers. Charlie, the manager of Laila's show (and yes, her pursuer), doesn't see Romeo as a threat to his pursuit of Laila, so he agrees. So Romeo is put to work and is given a home with them, but is still despondent over losing his owner and original home. He and Laila start to fall in love as she helps him get over his depression. However, Charlie notices this and now he wants to get Romeo out of the way. What do you guys think?

In India roadside Romeo is an euphemism for eve teasers, and Laila is like the Indian equivalent of juliet, laila-majnu is our own story of forbidden romance. Just some fun tidbits. And the reason he speaks hindi and English interchangeably, because most of us do talk like that. Code-mixing and code-switching is very common here.

Roadside Romeo was a big Disney project in India. Apart from being distributed by Disney, the movie was produced by Yash Raj Films (one of the biggest production houses in Bollywood) and the cast including Saif Ali Khan as Romeo, Kareena Kapoor Khan (Saif's wife) as Laila, and Javed Jaffrey as Charlie Anna, who are all some of the A-list actors in Bollywood. The movie also won that year's National Film Award for Best Animated Film (Animation isn't a well received genre and very few animated films are released in India, thereby RR not having a competition in the Awards).

I grew up with a few Bollywood films and it seems it's actually pretty standard for them to alternate between English and Hindi dialogue. British occupation and all that made English common. A good example I remember is Main Hoon Na, they switch between languages almost constantly.

Pretty sure switching back and forth between Hindi and English is how most people from India actually talk. Or saying random words in a sentence in english, or saying random words in hindi when saying an english sentence. This is all pretty common bilingual stuff. And India was a British colony for a very long time until basically quite recently, historically speaking.

It's also why almost all our "theater cuts" are around 90 minutes or less, while a "director's cut" is usually closer to 2 hours or more.
