I think the biggest strength about VeggieTales was that it taught morals more so than religion. Sure, the stories were mostly based on or inspired by Bible stories, and they quoted scripture and had their "God made you special" send-off, but the morals were "don't lie," "be kind to everyone," or "material possessions won't make you happy," and I think that's what really made it a show that everyone, even non-Christians, could enjoy.
@tyblips3 ай бұрын
All of those things are in the Bible tho. You just have to actually READ the book and see the themes outside of the general and obvious corruption from the stories being about humans. Cus individually humans are relatively okay and can be quite nice... but as a group we're often hateful, jealous, greedy dickheads lol. The Bible generally just tells you to do your best and be nice and helpful (and to put God first in other ways). Veggie tales did a good job at portraying the general messages in a fun way, without them directly reading about all the sex and murder that's also in there 😂

I grew up with Veggie Tales and 321 Penguins in the early 2000s and I still hold these shows in high regard because they were quality, had a good message, and were ultimately entertaining to watch. Despite problems with my faith in my mid to late teens, I will never forget the message in Veggie Tales because it reminds me that I am loved. Me and my sisters still quote lines and sing songs from Veggie Tales to this day. Phil's story is very bittersweet, but serves as a good reminder to not be prideful, even if with good intent.

Phil failed for one main reason: he just wasn't a great businessman. He's a dreamer and an artist. He needed someone savvy to run the business side who believed in him and his vision. Many of his choices were just poorly thought out. That said, he did make something unique and exceptional that touched a lot of people and in the end that's the best an artist can hope for.

Veggie tales appealed to a secular audience because it wasn’t just a show about religion, it was a really good show, that happened to be about religion. Most religious shows put the religion first, and then the show, and just come off feeling like a weird propaganda. Veggie tales takes religion as a part of their show, but not the whole thing. They added a substance to their show that went beyond the religious aspects. Veggie tales wouldn’t be the same show if it wasn’t about religion, but there is so, so much more to it than religion that it can still stand on its own. That is a rare thing in Christian media.

He was sort of like the Christian Walt Disney until his business fell apart. You’ve got the early interest in art, dropping out of college, the best friend/business partner that helps found the studio (Phil with Mike and Walt with Ub Iwerks), pioneering a new medium and animation techniques, heck even the location Chicago (where Walt was born and spent his teen years before moving to Kansas City). Sad he couldn’t keep his company together, I hope in hindsight that Phil’s name is up there with Walts.
@cooperminion8254 жыл бұрын
Walt's name is murkier tho. it's thanks to him that Disney owns everything and everyone. b/c of him the copyright laws were extended to basically forever. that means that we will never be able to see how other studios would interpret classic fairy tales or american legends

His tenure as the "Christian Walt Disney" was pretty short lived, especially considering he only ever made one successful franchise while every other franchise he made like 321 Penguins never caught on. Walt Disney made countless hits, while Phil was pretty much a one-hit wonder.

I survived 2 rounds of layoffs, then got cut in the last round, right after Jonah was released. My name is in the movie credits! In the end, though, it was hands down the most fun place to work, and I was crushed when we all got let go. We got to do the most incredible things. For example, when Star Wars: Attack of the Clones was released, they rented the movie theater next to the mall where we all worked and the entire company got to go over and see it. There were cartoons painted all over the walls in the stair ways (artistic graffiti). I have so many stories. Really amazing.

Honestly I think the reason why so many groups enjoyed VeggieTales was because of the genuine care that went into it. It was wholesome and taught lessons, it was entertaining and kids liked it. Even if you weren't into the whole spiritual thing, many of the stories were easy to follow and relatable, with comedic skits and catchy songs happening in between. In a way, it was like a Saturday Night Live show for kids that was extremely wholesome.

Indeed. That's something that's (ironically) missing from a lot of Christian media, but secular media sometimes suffers too from productions that feel lackluster and careless. Memorable things (remembered for being good at least, not infamous ones) often have a feel of heart and enthusiasm. (And no, simply being brighter and louder doesn't replace that, even if it gets attention)

@@koalasandwich567 Christian media is mostly sold through Christian bookstores, who receive merchandise through a tiny handful of distributors. If the content creator offends any one of them for whatever reason, they are effectively cancelled. So anything "Christian" has to be politically correct enough to make it through the corporate censors in order to have any chance of reaching their target audience, leaving the end result homogenous and boring. This process may sound familiar.

25:10 The simplistic-yet-expressive designs for all the characters are so brilliant from both an animation perspective and a marketing perspective. I once saw an interview with the creators of Phineas and Ferb where they said their design philosophy for the characters was to focus on one distinct shape any kid could draw as the baseline, because if a kid can't draw your character they won't feel connected to it and might feel bad about themselves, but making a character that's recognizable even in a three-year-old's crayon adaptation means that kid will draw your character over and over again. I can't even begin to count the number of times between the ages of 2 and 5 where I would draw a red circle and green oval on any sheet of paper, give them some big eyes and a smile, and imagine myself one day making my own VeggieTales show.

Veggie tales was based on bible stories, learning basic memory verses, and moral lessons for children (share, don't lie, be kind-things you get from other children or preschool shows) being secular removes half of the content that made it what it was, but if done right may work. But really, it was what is who are no longer practicing or left the church remember. Many remember it fondly from what i know. And even if we don't believe anymore or have different views from the church we grew up in, remember this show as a joy. Personally, I wouldn't want to take God or christianity out of this show as it always did it fairly well. Granted, I have not seen it in years, so I may be misremembering it. But I do recall it being a happy part of Sunday school.

This show was my childhood. I was pretty disappointed to see how drastically it had changed in recent years. It used to have so much more heart and personality. In its earlier days, it may not have looked especially stunning or had the biggest budget, but it definitely had some great writing, acting, and talent behind it. Best of all, it wasn't over the top with its Christian morals. The lessons were always approachable and never pretentious or forced which is kind of a rarity when it comes to religious children's media. Even now as someone who was raised Christian and later became agnostic, I still have an appreciation for the simplistic but effective way that the show introduced kids to complicated moral situations with an often overlooked sense of grace and humor.

Yeah, from what i remember the reason it’s more bearable to non-Christian audiences is the moral was never presented as “God said no, that’s the biggest reason why you shouldn’t do it” it was “This has negative effects on the people around you, ps it also makes our skyman sad”

I'm not Christian and wasn't raised Christian but this show was a big part of my childhood. I think it's stupid to remove god from it because that is part of it's identity. It also doesn't overpreach on Christianity and just gives good universal morals while also being hilarious.

All anything can hope for is a swift transfer into the state of permanent entropy, most species have been added to the fossil record and have not been remembered since. Billions of "special" humans, forgotten thousands of years ago, pulverized to dust, their faces never to be reimagined even. I absolutely *adored* VeggieTales. I grew up with it from as early as I could remember. I would rewatch the three Larry Boy videos I have with my little sister, rewatch Sweetpea Beauty as often as I wanted, and would buy more VeggieTales shorts as soon as my mom found them and that I really wanted to watch. I especially loved the Christmas shorts and would watch them year-round. Sad to see that the show's gone downhill in recent years. I'm proud of Mr. Vischer, though.

Man... I’m not even Christian anymore, but VeggieTales still holds up. Mostly because it focused on being a good show before being a Christian show. The show just feels warm and wholesome in the way that Christianity should, without all the “I’m better than you” pretentiousness, fear-mongering, and preaching against certain types of people that really soured me on religion in general. VeggieTales makes me feel nostalgia for a much less cynical time in my life.

Simple Bitch even if most of the people you encountered were like that it doesn’t change my statement. Unfortunately it’s often that these types of people are the most outspoken whereas I would say most normal people belonging to the religion are quiet about their beliefs and faith. There are 2.4 billion Christians in the world. And billions belonging to other religions. Don’t let a couple bad dozen people you see dictate how you view a religion that billions belong to, however I can understand your position

I'm not gonna lie, I'm Catholic (it's basically the same thing as Christianity just with a few changes here and there), and yeah, I really am starting to notice some of the hypocrisies in religion. My parents are really devout Catholic (never going a day without mentioning the big Guy in the sky) and when I was little, I didn't really believe them when they said Catholics are NOT always perfect, and have done really messed up stuff in the past. Again, I was really little at the time. Obviously nowadays, I've grown up a little and I now understand what they meant. And I gotta say, I have mad respect for the religious people out there who actually try to give the religion a good name. To not think that they own the world or whatever because of their beliefs. They don't abuse the power of religion to do whatever they want. And as a Catholic, I sometimes wonder to myself, isn't the entire point of believing in God loving everyone else, regardless of their background. You can be friends with an atheist, jew, Buddhist, etc. and it would be totally cool. If everyone truly felt the love and compassion Christianity is supposed to exhibit rather than be super toxic about it? In short, I may not be the biggest fan of my being Catholic, but maybe down the road something will work out in the end. And watching this video kind of gives me some hope that maybe no matter bad things get, you might get something out of it. It may not be bad or even good. It could be terrible. But as long as it leaves an impact on you, and you try to own up to it, all I have to say to that is: God, you sir definitely have a weird but interesting way of making things work. Sorry for the rambling, but I just wanted to get that off my chest. I really should start re watching Veggietales. Saber wasn't kidding when he said this video would be big. Worth the wait!
