I have some corrections and new info about Renny: -Oniria Studios isn't French, it's from Luxembourg -I used the Portuguese cover art of Renart on accident in the video and said it was French Again, I'm sorry about the mistakes. I strive to provide accuracy with my videos. The source material was definitely lacking this time around though and that made things difficult with nailing details down. I'm late to the party, I know, but I think Renard/Renart was originally a variant of the name Reinhart, which is of germanic origin. It wasn't "invented", it just was a given name among many others. It is true, however, that what was simply a character's name completely replaced the actual name of said character's species. As a Frenchie myself, I too find this pretty amazing. The other amazing thing is that as a result, even though Renard probably should still be considered a legit name (being a variant of names that are still being used nowadays as far as I know), I can't think of it as anything except the name of an animal species. Ah well X)

Funny you mention Disney's Robin Hood, that was originally going to be about Reynard the Fox but changed during development into Robin Hood. The original idea for the movie is the reason why the Robin Hood characters are Anthropomorphic animals. To quote it's trivia section from IMDB: "Initially, Disney considered a movie about the European fable Reynard the Fox. So, French people here. I don't know about the movie, but I do know about the original story. They're multiple stories written by different persons. The character name is Renart, and we call the modern editions where all the stories are put togethers: "Le Roman de Renart". Back in the time, the name we were using for foxes was "Goupil'. But those story got so popular we started using Renart name for them, and now we call them "Renard". (And the part where the wolf was fishing with his tail was in one of the original story. I clearly remember it. But... Well...It WAS many different stories written by different authors. Not one movie which was supposed to go somewhere.)

@@Saberspark Did you know Disney's Robin Hood was also based on a failed movie project called Chanticleer. It was going to be a animated film about a rooster named Chanticleer who thought his crowing raised the sun on his farm and that Renart was combined to help the story, but due to budgets it was canned. However, the concept art found a way in other works in the end.

I've studied the original Renart stories in class in middle school, I think most French people have. Renart is basically a character used in many short stories, that were meant to be satire and give a social and political commentary of the medieval society at the time. Renart was the main character, and then the wolf Ysengrin is usually his main enemy, but you have a very wide set of characters. Lots of different authors have written these, so it's not always consistent. What I get from this movie, is that it's just a weird mash-up of some of the more popular Renart stories, but... without the political context. So, it just doesn't make any sense. The part where they go fishing and the wolf fishes with his tail and remains stuck in the ice notably, is one of the popular story. Which I guess is why it's here, but... Yeah, it doesn't make any sense. Probably why the movie is so boring. It's based on disjointed short stories with no bigger plot linking them together. In the original stories, Renart is, to put it mildly, an absolute asshole. Such a weird choice to have him the hero of a kid movie. Oh, and Rufus doesn't exist. They had about thirty characters to choose from, and they made up some annoying mouse who complains all the time. And also, if anyone was wondering: yep, in the original stories, the wolf is Renart's uncle, and his wife actually cheats on him with Renart. It's a recurring joke in the story.

Very nice summary. I was thinking all the time 'wait, isn't some of this from Aesops Fables?' but then some of the stories you mentioned are clearly not by Aesop. I think the german equivalent of the fox being used for political commentary was 'Meister Reinecke' and I agree... they could have used so many characters forthe sidekick... like the wise owl giving sound advice to the reckless fox and therefore saving him from taking the blunt of his actions would have been a much better choice.

You know, if the scene where Ysengrin is tricked into using his tail to fish was moved around and was actually used as the backstory for WHY Ysengrin hates Renart would have been perfect. Their very first encounter is Renart tricking Ysengrin and lying to him, which would lead to Renarts biggest mistake and consequence for lying, which seems to be the main thing Renart is trying to overcome throughout the movie, showing that he ISNT a liar, but his greatest adversary and antagonist was made through one of his biggest lies. Like to combine all of the different story’s of Renart isn’t too hard, it’s about figuring out where things should go and how to make it cohesive.
