I know a lot of people have already brought up the panic attack scene and how it’s depicted. But no one brings up what happens right after. Puss opens up to perrito about how he is on his last life and is afraid of death. Really calmly Perrito replies “it’s okay. It’s okay to be afraid” showing that his emotions are valid and not something to be ashamed of. And then puss opens up about the backstory w Kitty and how it made him feel, and perrito acknowledged that it would be a good idea to actually talk to Kitty about how he felt. I LOVE kids movies that show that emotions are valid and communication is important.

Side note: Even Jack Horner has a deeper character than you'd think, if you think about it. Like how he wants to remove all magic from everyone and give it to himself because Pinnochio beat him in an advertisement battle, and he think it's because he didn't have magic. Or how he's a product of his environment, because he was basically a spoiled brat that grew up and started overcompensating for _whatever_ he thought he lacked-In this case, it's magic, or magical artifacts.

@@danielawesome36 yeeeess! He is evil and loves being a maniac, but it doesn't come out of nowhere either. He still has a very clear motive that puts him in direct opposition to the heroes. And I love how other characters try to make him break character by using kindness (or cuteness, bless you, Perrito) but he just doesn't buy it. Very proud of being evil, embracing what the conditions he had growing up shaped him into the man he is today. What an absolute unit.

Fun Wolf facts *SPOILERS:* 1. the whistle of death is 8 measures/beats long all movie long except for the final fight where it was 9 measures long when he lights up the fire, symbolizing that this is the last fight 2. The whistle of death is played 7 times during the movie. In most of Latin america/South America "un gato tiene 7 vidas" (cats have 7 lives). Idk if its intentional but it's cool anyways 2x during the bar scene 1x during the jack horner chase 1x during the cliff fight 3x during the final fight (when death enters, when he lights the fire and when he leaves) 3. The last time deaths whistle is heard it's not finished, only the first part because death didn't take puss life. The panic attack scene was actually the first that I saw of this movie. I work at a movie theater where we deliver people their snacks, and I was bringing someone smth and walked in on that bit. I was legit a little floored by how intense it felt with the heartbeat noise in the background and Puss hyperventilating, and I genuinely thought Perrito trying to calm him was really sweet

Death, the fact that the viewer forgets about his appearance at the start of the film after around twenty minutes but then, after the protagonist’s great escape, you hear his whistle and see him in the crowd of people. That actually gave me chills and an animated movie has never done that before. It really shows that no matter how nice their escape was, they’re still going to die one day. So well made.

I love how, the star’s main line of defense isn’t the deadly stuff. It just, grants your wish before ever reaching the actual star. Forest of nostalgia? Showing Goldi she already has an amazing family. Cave of lost souls and lava river? Would help Puss regain his courage while forcing him to confront and change himself. Mountain of despair? Kitty would have needed her friends to pull her out of those emotions. I’m convinced if Big Jack ever got the map, it would either be similar to Perrito, or just the forest doing everything in its power to kill him, cause the star knew it couldn’t change his mind.

Yes, I didn't really catch that until I rewatched it, but yes, the Star was trying to defend itself by simply giving them what they truly wanted already, which is why Perrito's path was so easy; he didn't even want the wish at all even if he got to it. It actually explained a lot why nobody had ever managed to reach it. Most people, if they didn't just straight up die in there, probably realized they didn't need to reach it anymore and simply stopped bothering.

It struck me not as a line of defense, but as an outpouring of the star's nature: giving you what you truly want. Every character save Jack - Puss, Kitty, Perrito, and Goldi - say at some point that they got their wish, no magic required. For Goldi and Puss, it was because their perspectives shifted, while Kitty's wish was fulfilled as Puss' character improved throughout their travels. Perrito never needed a wish because he already understood that his life can be good simply by having the proper perspective - he didn't need any material change to be happy, so what use would magic be? So ultimately, the star was granting wishes left and right as it was intended to, just in a roundabout way.

One of my favorite parts is where Goldie finally admits what her wish is to the bears and the baby and the papa both are heartbroken and slightly betrayed. But the mama bear is obviously heartbroken, but she accepts it, she knew it was going to happen and it would have been a perfect set up for them to split up and regroup at the star but no. The mama bear says with her full heart, that it’s okay. No matter how much they love her, they won’t force her to be unhappy and they will do their everything they can to help her get her wish. It was just a scene where it was pure love, mama bear only wanted Goldie to be happy and if that meant leaving them to be with others, than that’s okay. Because she’s happy. I just really loved that scene.

The weapons that Death uses aren't actually scythes they're sickles, but the same idea applies. The reason why most depictions of the Grim Reaper show him with a scythe is because the scythe is a farming tool used to cut and harvest plants. It implies that he uses it to harvest our souls when our time comes. The sickles are also farming tools used for the same purpose in a different way so the same idea still applies

Yeah, the reason he used sickles is because a scythe would have been too obvious. The sickles have the same meaning of harvesting and reaping, but it also gives Death some uniqueness, as I've never seen a portrayal of Death use sickles other than him. It would also allow for more fast-paced fights as a large, heavy scythe would have been less interesting to see fight a small rapier.

RIGHT? Death actually has a super interesting motive and isn't just the "big bad wolf". Death is the ultimate bounty hunter -- the only one you can never truly escape -- and his bounty isn't gold but the satisfaction of leveling those who are arrogant and conceited and think of themselves as free from consequence. The perfect foil to a living legend who thinks he can never die.

One thing I noticed on a rewatch. This film is full of characters foreshadowing things and perfect setups and payoffs, like the wolf hinting who he really is, but I noticed Puss's own theme song right at the beginning of the film very subtly foreshadows his real feelings that we learn later. The song "Fearless Hero" is mostly just Puss bragging about himself, and the chorus affirming his praise; "Who's brave and ready for trouble?" "You are, you are!" "Who's so unbelievably humble?" "You are, you are!" But at one point Puss breaks the lyrical structure and simply states "Puss in Boots is never afraid!" but you can hear the chorus still respond "You are, you are!", basically sandbagging him in his own song. He says he's not afraid, the song says "Yes you are", and we learn later that very much is the case, in more ways than one.

Perrito is probably the most well-executed comic relief character I have seen in an animated film in a long, long time. Not too annoying and provides as much to the story as to he does to the comic relief. Truly incredible writing. Puss's Panic attack is also what hit me the most. I had two really bad panic attacks sometime in the last two years and they weren't even life threatening but they prevented me from living. Well, I guess one actually did almost kill me but the one that didnt took the most out of me. I didnt have a pet to help me get through it but the sound of his heartbeat calming down...aw. every beat I felt in my own rythym. This whole movie made me chilled to the bone, cry, and feel grateful for the life I have.

That's also the exact parts that really got me, I've had 3 or 4 panic attacks last summer and autumn. Nothing life threatening though, the first panic attack started when I got the flu or the cold variant that the news outlets like to talk about, it came at me by surprise, the other two panic attacks I had no idea what started those but it felt like a drug trip when I tried to sleep it off. On top of that I have a deep fear of death, I had surgery back when I was an infant for a stomach muscle problem that prevents food from entering the intestines; it's fatal when you don't go in for surgery, pyloric stenosis is the name of it. Knowing how close I was to death before gives retrospective fears. My fear of death is deeply rooted.

Can I just say that the entire scene where the dog comforts Puss is a masterpiece? The dog saw Puss run off and followed him because he was concerned and confused. When he finds Puss hyperventilating and unresponsive, he doesn't try and make Puss talk or explain, he just slowly goes over and places his head on Puss' stomach until he calms down. The movie lingers on this moment for a while until Puss' breathing calms down and he's aware enough to pet the dog and thank him... He doesn't specify for what, but it's clear what he's talking about. The movie doesn't baby the viewers by telling them that this is therapy dog behavior or meant to calm Puss down; they just DHOW it. Because even children understand what it means to hug or hold someone who's crying or scared.

Since everyone else is sharing, I loved that instead of the bears leaving Goldi to find the star on her own, or something like that, they still decided to help her. I especially love how Mama Bear was the one who stepped up to tell the others to help her. They didn't hate her for wanting to use the wish to find her real parents, they were just really hurt that she was gonna leave, and that she felt she had to lie about her intentions. That's real family drama done right, and it's so refreshing compared to how this scenario usually goes.

I love how the most common compliment about this movie is that everyone cried during the panic attack scene. It's just so perfectly written and shot. I've suffered from severe anxiety my whole life, I don't remember ever not having it, and it's extremely common for me to genuilely be afraid for my life. I'll be frozen for sometimes longer than a half hour and it's terrifying, and this is usually almost completely unprompted, so when I saw Puss experience that same anxiety I just sobbed lol. I cried again when Puss faced his anxiety by facing Death and didn't back down. I hope I can do the same one day

Perrito definitely could have been an annoying character, and I was worried about that when I saw the trailer, but when I actually saw the movie, he totally won me over with his extremely realistic therapy dog behavior. I thought that accuracy was so damn cool, the writers must have done their research on canine behavior. He was perfect. And I also love how well Death was executed and how he forced Puss to learn to value his life and his relationships, such as with Kitty and Perrito. In the end, Puss truly learned to value his one last life and that’s why Death ended up leaving him alone, at least for that time. Death says he will of course return for Puss at some point, but this time, Puss is able to accept that. It’s such perfect development for this previously one note character and I was so surprised by it. Puss in Boots might have nine lives, but we don't. Life is short! Time flies! Do what you love and care about who you love before it's too late.

Since we’re all sharing, I got back from seeing this movie about an hour ago, and without a doubt it is on my top three favourite animated movies. The character designs, the dialogue, the symbolism, the family dynamic with the Goldilocks B Plot, the music, the voice acting, THE ANIMATION, the message, the story, ALL OF IT WAS JUST PHENOMENAL. For me, the part when the Goldilocks family all hugged towards the end was the part that made me cry (likely because I’m very family oriented- interesting how different life experiences resulted in different “hard hitting story points” for different people. This is also a small thing but I cannot praise this movie enough for not falling into MY LEAST FAVOURITE TROPE- when Kitty overhears Puss talking to Perrito about him leaving her at their wedding, she doesn’t “come in at the wrong time and hear the wrong thing”, she overhears the conversation at the perfect moment and it allows her to know that Puss is in fact sorry. Idk i just hate it in stories when problems arise bc a character misheard a conversation. So needless to say I’m very happy this movie did not play into that horrendous trope. I could probably talk about this movie forever but Saber pretty much said everything that needed to be said (except for the comment on the Goldilocks B Plot, that shit was incredible).

An underrated aspect of this movie that not many people talk about: It’s lighthearted throughout but when it needs to get serious it does so without any interjecting humor. Building off Puss’ panic attack scene, I was so happy that when Perrito (the dog) found him, the writers made him act in a way a friend actually would in that scenario. He wasn’t overly enthusiastic like he is in nearly any other scene, trying to get Puss to smile or anything. Hell, they didn’t even bring back the “rub my belly” schtick from the beginning of the movie, which they easily could’ve. Instead, Perrito tries asking Puss what’s wrong, realizes he wont be getting an answer anytime soon, and decides to… just be there for him. As someone who has many friends who experience panic attacks themselves, I’ve definitely learned that simple being there with them can be more beneficial than continuously asking “what’s wrong?” or trying to be active in solving it. It both strengthens the relationship between the two, and also builds on Perrito’s wish of being a therapist dog, by him actually behaving like a great therapy dog would. (Side note: Right after that scene Kitty catches up and starts eavesdropping on them, and I was pleasantly surprised that the writers didn’t go with the overdone “character missunderstanding what two other characters are saying about them” trope by only hearing shit like “…I can’t tell her…” “…Keep this a secret…” or etc.. Kitty heard that Puss was remorseful for their previous split, which strengthened their relationship even before he told her to her face. This was just such a thoughtful movie, even besides the amazing visuals, action and humor.

My dad died recently, and I've been facing down the barrel of trauma from other things that have happened at this time of the year in previous years. And it's been so overwhelming. This movie really helped me find some comfort with it all. And I am not disappointed at all by it.

What I LOVED most is that we didn't have to deal with characters not sharing their thoughts and feelings until the second act group breakup. They were in it together except for one brief moment, but it gets repaired when boots TALKS ABOUT HIS PROBLEM, and his friends understand. I'm gonna be completely honest... I watched this video BEFORE watching the movie, and I thought to myself "Best Dreamworks movie in a long ass time? Even one of the best animated movies?? Yeah right." I didn't want to believe the hype surrounding it, but I was in for a huge reality check. This movie made me eat my words and I was absolutely blown away. It was phenomenal!! I was not prepared for the scene you mentioned that got you emotional. I knew what to look for when it happened and I STILL teared up. Damn.... This movie hits DEEP. Like that theme about mortality really got to me. I felt what Puss felt. On a completely different note, the fact that they were bleeping swear words in a childrens movie was hilarious!!! I don't think that's ever been done before. Overall, this movie was way more mature for what it was advertised as and did things that very few animated movies have done before it. Fantastic movie!

10:15 I think it's obvious that Kitty lied, when she said she wasn't there either. She wanted Puss to stop feeling so bad about it, after she found out how Puss really felt, and that he regreted is. Her behaviour through out the first half of the movie shows how deeply hurt she was. If she hasn't shown up then why would she feel this hurt, or even how would she know that Puss didn't show up? This doesn't make sense to me. Her, trying to make Puss feel better, does. That just shows how deeply Kitty loves Puss in my opinion.

I think this is what makes most sense. Even her wish was all about having someone she can count on and trust, through thick and thin! I can't help but feel that wish came about because of Santa Coloma. I have no doubts that if Puss didn't reveal that to Perrito, she would've held Santa Coloma over his head (we latinas hold grudges for a long time) and would've held onto that memory as why she can't count on Puss to make her, as his wife, a priority. So when she overhead Puss's regret, and Puss himself holds accountability, she let's go of the grudge by saying "I wasn't there either". She is willing to forgo the memory and humiliation to make amends with the man she loves.

The panic attack scene is just....it's really good. The sound effects are what got me. The loud beating of his heart, the sounds of his breathing, just seeing how out of control puss was and falling further and further until he was comforted. I actually felt myself grow some anxiety watching it and teared up seeing puss calm down. ALSO! this movie is super dark! Like wow they just casually kill off people on screen like flies.

The Wolf is my favorite character in this movie, period. I also loved how the first fight Wolf and Puss had seemed to set up a fake out with blood. I was truly expecting that close up shot to zoom out and reveal a bag of fruit or something be the cause of what dripped down Puss' head. But no, it was actual blood and it gave me goosebumps. The fear in Puss' eyes was the cherry on top to make this one of my favorite scenes from the movie.

This is such an underrated observation. Not only that but they show his foot get cut in the final fight and, while toned down, they don’t hide it away “because kids will be scared of blood”. Out of all villains i've seen in Dreamworks films, Death is literally one of the scariest and deadliest villain I have ever seen. This man is Lord Shen level evil. And I love it. The way they depicted him in the film wasn't like the traditional death with the hood, the skeleton hook and the scythe, they picked something that would still go in with the whole fairytale theme and it worked so well.

The scene where puss has an anxiety attack and perro was there for him was the very moment I realized this movie was something extremely special. I was in awe how they tied all those previous details with perry wanting to be a therapy dog actually ending up comforting puss out of a literal anxiety attack triggered by literal death chasing him. I loved the fact that, not only was Jack Horner being the bad guy a deep cut since hardly anyone remembers the nursery rhyme, but that fact that it WAS a deep cut was his main motivation. He hates that the nursery rhyme he's from is so lame compared to other fairy tales, so he uses all of his money to indulge in as much magical stuff as he can get his grubby gorilla hands on. Not only does that make for a clever motivation, but it made for a fun character gimmick too: the fact that he has access to all these disparate magic items gave him an armory of fairy tale references. He used the fairy godmother's wand to turn a pumpkin into a battle tank, he has the sword in the stone with the stone still attached, poison apple grenades, and unicorn horn crossbow bolts, all stuffed into Mary Poppins's bag. Such a fun concept for a character.

@@jahcode6132 You know, it's even funnier when you take into account that the nursery rhyme is based on a real-life person; and just like Puss' Jack Horner, the real-life Jack Horner is anything BUT good. Jack Horner (or Thomas Horner) was delivering a Pie to King Henry VIII; however, he decided to take away the deed to a mansion; the item in question is inside the pie. The reason for that was because the Abbot (who sent the Deed for Henry VIII) wanted to keep his monestary, so he sent the deed as a bribe. When Henry VIII found out the Deed was NOT in the pie (but didn't know Jack stole it), the Abbot was... well, let's say the Gluttonous Murder of a King was not happy with this outcome. Point being, having to make Jack Horner the villain, based on this truth, that is some extreme irony in the poem's case.

The scene with Perrito putting his head on Pusses lap was amazingly done. My Dog Lola had started doing that to me when she can tell I am upset, anxious or so forth. There was never any training for it or anything else. She just realized that when I am upset she wants to help and that is what she does too. And a lot of times it can help snap me out of the funk. I call her my therapy dog because of it. The scene hit EXACTLY right. Even my friend watching the movie commented on how spit on that was to how he's seen Lola act with me. It could not of been better done.

I really liked the plot with Goldilocks because it amplified the messages of the movie about wishing upon a star, or rather, you don't need to. Because at one point, the map implies that she had already what she wished for in front of her, in the same way that Kitty had her companion in front of her, and Puss later accepted his own mortality and did not need a wish because he had it all along, a life he should treasure. And in the end, they decide to break the map and not make any wish, because they didn't need to do it anymore. Most of the times what we really want is in us or with us and we don't really notice it because we are enamoured with a romanticized idea of what we think our wish is.

I absolutely love the fact that Death is a wolf, it honestly just fits. It’s like the wolf and the rabbit, the rabbit can run from the wolf but the wolf will eventually catch up to the rabbit. That’s just the circle of life, just life and death. In this scenario, Puss is the rabbit (despite being a cat), he can run and run and run but in the end he just has to accept that he will one day be trapped in Death’s jaws.

This movie has become my new favorite. I've had severe depression and anxiety for years. When I was younger and I broke down into tears with panic attacks alone in my room, my dog was the only one there for me. If it wasn't for him, I dont think I would have made it through high-school. He's gone now and I miss him very dearly, but I've found people who have also been able to help me like he has. Not only does his panic attack scene remind me of my beloved dog, it also reminds me of my dearest friend who sat by my side for 4 years whenever I was going through a panic attack. I miss him just as dearly even if he is still alive and still in touch with me. I somewhat feel that Puss had made it through his panic attacks and fear of death too easily compared to my experiences, but I might just also be a huge outlier when it comes to my mental health.

The spin on "Little Jack Horner" is absolutely genius. He has a clear motive, being one of the only "fairytale" characters to not possess any form of magic, so obviously he would wish for all the magic in the world, with no one but him with the center of all magic. He is endearingly goofy, from his absurd cruelty, to his large torso and smaller legs, he is just a great addition into the Shrek universe. Props to the concept artists and voice actors.

I know the final fight with death is typically included in the praise about the animation, but I want to praise that fight by itself. I'd say that its one of the best animated fight sequences of all time. The color palette is stunning, the movements were so kinetic and powerful, not a single wasted frame. The way it shifted from 3d animation to 2d every so often is done so perfectly, especially the shot where the camera goes through the wall of red flames and its just their 2d silhouettes *Chefs kiss*

Saw this movie tonight in the theatre with some friends, my first time going since before covid. This movie was so good. Honestly some pretty heavy messages in this one: Jiminy Cricket having to accept that Jack Horner is just pure evil after wanting to believe there is good in all people, Puss having to accept that Death will get him no matter what. Death was really impressive in this movie, his dialogue, delivery, the whistle. Every entrance he had was special, and even when he wasn't on screen, his presence was felt. This is one of my favorite animated movies.

I love death because there are a lot of hints about who he is before the reveal. When he points to the "dead" on the wanted poster it's actually referring to him as death, not puss. Plus the line "everyone thinks they will be the one to defeat me. But no one's escaped me yet." When he says "everyone" that actually mean everyone! Plus he purposefully said "escaped" because death is something you escape. Then in his next encounter we see death put 2 gold coins in his eyes and point at Puss. Putting gold coins in the eye sockets of the dead is an old tradition so you could pay ferry man to bring you across the river Styx and into the afterlife. Another design element are his weapons. They are scythes but not only that, when they are retracted they form the letter "D" for Death.

Not to mention that his appearance changed the tone of the film entirely. Every appearance becomes a scene from a horror film(shadows lengthening under a door, hearing the whistle over a chaotic fight scene, etc.) But its also what his first appearance did. He drew blood. Once that happened, most of the childlike goofiness left the film. There were stakes now. Not that it stopped being fun entirely, but people started dying left and right. People get turned into statues, fall to the bottom of a ravine, get eaten by plants or exploded. Jack Horner straight up tries to shoot a dog in the face. These are fun moments, sure, but not the fun and childish "oh, he's just embarrassed" or "he's hurt but he's okay". They're fuckin' dead. In hilarious ways. It's small, and most probably wouldn't pay it any mind, but that's an important change tonally.

For me, the Goldilocks B Plot was my favorite part of the movie. The way they explored what her wish was without expressly saying so was done PHENOMINALLY, and the hint from the map saying "You have what you wish for right in front of you" was done so well imo.
