I've stated this multiple times in other comment sections that talk about this game, but there is an answer as to what's happening. In the developer commentary video, he gave a few questions that are clues as to what the game is actually about. When you complete True Nightmare, you get a cryptic cutscene of Costume slowly unmasking himself only to reveal a mirror and then immediately cuts to black with panting. Here's the clues they gave and I'll give you my explanation further down: Why does Fred decide to stay on night 5 even though he could leave on night 4? Why is there heavy breathing after the costume reveals that there's a mirror? What does a mirror typically mean? Why is Costume the only one who isn't an animatronic and also doesn't kill you? Why are the flags backwards in the office? The meaning of the ending is paralleled to what the ending of the original game actually meant. Answer: This game is a series of nightmares. Fred Andrews used to work at Chuck E' Cheese as a mascot and he was freaked out by the characters. He had a series of nightmares where he worked as a nightguard and the animatronics were sentient and angry about being replaced. The costume, a reflection of Fred, is somehow alive and walking around as if someone is wearing it and tries to get Fred killed by pushing the gate up in these nightmares.

It’s at least nothing convoluted like the lore in the actual FNAF series. Plus, even when you don’t realize the hidden twist, the story at first glance is still simplistic with the animatronics being alive and not wanting to be replaced.

Fun fact about the basement mini game character, Crusty the Cat, is that he never made it out of the original location, and was quickly forgotten about not long after. It makes one of his lines, “You said you was gonna make me a star some day, yeah?”, more interesting to me.

That line was actually from the official location. Crusty actually says that to chuck e in the portraits. And many other lines that he has in the game. It's very interesting. He was actually removed a year after chuck e cheeses' first release 1977 when crusty WAS around. Then 1978 removed after. I am unsure of why he was replaced but it is pretty cool that they referenced him.

I remember back in 2021 when I was both into FNAF and into the history of Chuck e Cheese's, this game was so interesting to me, and it's still the only FNAF fangame that I've bothered playing. As time has gone by I've gradually forgot about it more and more, it's so cool to see that it ended up leaving a lasting legacy on FNAF fangames, and is hailed is one of the best ones. I still remember being in the Radiance discord when the game launched, and watching people stream the race to beat nightmare mode in the VCs there. Absolutely incredible memories

16:58 I have a theory about this, it’s a variant of AI Singularity. Basically in this universe. They managed to use AI’s to control the animatronics instead of manual controls or pre-programmed controls like in our world. The AI’s became self-aware on their own evolution and when they became aware of the company’s plans to replace them for more advanced robots, they became desperate for survival, hence why they started attacking you and starting doing things they weren’t originally programmed to do. Yeah it’s not perfect since it doesn’t explain the og and modern Chuck E. Cheese’s costumes especially Modern Chuck E Cheese since he’s anachronistic but it’s something.

Custom Night isn’t canon. Modern Chuck E. was only in custom night and they debunked claims about it being canon. Also, there’s a reason for Costume’s existence but you’re probably gonna be disappointed. Also, with the animatronics being sentient, it has nothing to do with AI. They described it as Toy Story logic where they’re alive and that’s the extent of it.

On the line of subverting what most FNAF fangames do, I like how the management aren't utterly neglectful and outright tell the player on night 4 NOT to come back because they've realized there's a big problem and are paying more attention/preparing to deal with it. Why the guard comes back is a rather large question mark, but that's fine. Maybe they have their own reason, or maybe it's a fun, subtle nod at the player themselves continuing regardless of what they're told, wanting to see things through. I'd love to see you talk about Playtime with Percy, it also has unlockable custom night characters and is overall pretty neat.

@@DraconisLeonidas It's over simplified, but yeah. tldr (because I want to go nap), but another guy explained that Fred was a former Mascot wearer for Chuck e. Cheeses who was creeped out by the animatronics. The evidence in game is #1: The flags are all backwards. It's a small note, but often dreams involve remembering specific things badly. #2: Fred coming back on night 5. There was no reason for it, but dreams often force events without reason because they're...dreams. And most importantly, #3: The true nightmare ending involves mascot taking off his mask, revealing a mirror. The screen cuts to black and heavy panting is heard. In the Lucid dreaming community, it's well known that looking at yourself in the mirror is often a way to trigger a lucid dream or end a nightmare. This is also why mascot was the only human in the restaurant; he's just a memory from when Fred used to work there. But yeah, just a nightmare. Anticlimactic for sure, but atleast they put effort into the reveal.

As someone whose really, REALLY into the history of animatronics made for this sort of thing (and just in general) I have a love- hate relationship with FNAF. This is a really fantastic fan game, and I’m glad it’s getting attention. The details of the original portrait bots, the Billy Bob cameo, Crusty the Cat is relevant?? Hello??? It’s like a dream to see a game with this much love to it’s source. Having the costume be a relevant character is very cool to me. Like- that’s not a half costume half animatronic like FNAF, that’s just what the walk around looked like, and it’s so creepy here. I love the gate mechanic, I love the lack of map in the cameras, I love this whole game. For once in a blue moon, I feel like FNAF and my love of real animatronic history are combining in a way that’s just the best. This game feels so grounded for a Five Nights fan game, and it’s somewhat refreshing to me. It’s such a cool idea to use the portrait bots that were really only an upper body for this game, the shots of them dragging themselves around are so eerie, and I don’t find these types of animatronics scary. Having a defunct Crusty in the basement is also such a nice touch, justice for my boy Crusty the Cat 💔

Billy Bob is a character from rock-a-fire. It's where the full body animatronic's of chuck e cheese in irl came from, show time, the franchise that bought out chuck e cheese, tried to purchase the character rights from creative engineering, whom kindly told them to get fucked. So their answer to destroy the rock a fire's og costumes and turn them into chunky e cheese characters. All for billy bob was used, so they used him for extra parts. Sorry if this was long but i personally got super into learning about this almost forgotten history.

Also, the lore of this game goes a smidge more deep than what you'd assume, hehehe. It correlates the ending of the original game, with the ending of the Nightmare challenge, and some... odd details on the office. For instance, the flags are all reversed. If you look at, say, the USA flag, it's tied to the pole by the wrong side. Another odd detail I noticed just now, Sue's post-it note is, for some reason, written with a typewriter font. On that note: if Sue asked Fred to take her position, then why does the phone guy (his name is Gus if I recall) say that there's no one guarding the place at night? I'll say what this all means in the next comment.

The answer for all this? Fred, possibly a costume performer, is having nightmares from the few nights he spent taking up Sue's position. The Costume reveals a mirror when it removes its head in the Nightmare mode ending, because it's quite literally the reflection of Fred. Maybe a reflection of his fears of those shifts, maybe an allusion to the fact it's the same costume that Fred wears during the day. The Nightmare challenge is, quite literally, possibly just the worst of these nightmares that Fred had so far. The animatronics are probably not even malfunctioning or anything, Fred is just having nightmares about that happening. Dreams, especially lucid dreams, tend to have some details wrong, no matter how realistic they may seem. Patterns are wrong, numbers are switched around, whole words don't make sense... they just added enough of these details to avoid making it too obvious, like the flipped flags. There's probably some more I don't remember or never noticed, so yeah.

Honestly I'd say the FNACEC: Revived is the far better remake. It's not officially endorced but it takes more visual and mechanical elements from the OG game, and expands apon them into an amazing gameplay loop. (unlike the frankly painful gameplay the remake has) Honestly, I feel like the Radience remake's ashamed of the original, and it sucks, because Revived shows off how far keeping that style can get you. Like, the Radience game feels more like it was vaguely inspired by the OG game given how many differences there are.

I find it absurd that I had no idea this thing came out until recently 😂. I did the voice for the exquisite Charles Entertainment Cheese in this when I had picked up doing VO around 2022 in college and had some spare time to do this. After I sent in the files, I hadn't heard anything from them and thought it was dead, UNTIL this year when I saw a gameplay vid of it in like, March or something. I had my doubts until I saw an old username of mine in the credits and went through the files on my PC and found the original voice files (that I luckily still retained). Anyway, it's nice to see that the project survived, and I want to mention that the lines sound much better with their processing than raw, they sound like I have a crappy attempt at a NJ accent and a stuffy nose 😂.

Amazing video! I'm a retired top player of this game, being number 1 in the world for months before very recently falling to number 2. Although it's true that True Nightmare All Challenges is the hardest challenge on the most recent version, it's actually not the hardest challenge that the game has to offer, unfortunately it's not even close. There are three main patches of the game, and the patch Shooter verified TNAC on was the most recent and easiest one. There are two other versions, 1.1.1, who's main change is bear being INSANLEY more difficult then 1.2.1, the most current version. TNAC 1.1.1 was recently verified, and it would rank among the top 3 of the current list. The hardest version, however, 1.0.2, makes certain factors so luck based that none of the top players have even gotten 3am, making the true hardest challenge within vanilla Chuck E Cheese Rebooted very likely humanly impossible

Not including a 6th night and not labelling the custom night as another numbered night were incredibly refreshing. If only FNAF 1 had done that. (I'm not as annoyed with subsequent games because including the 5 in their names was purely the branding of the franchise because of the first game.) And the 2-fold door mechanics were a brilliant idea for gameplay, just as the animatronics crawling instead of walking made for visuals that actually made sense. Well done, and thank you.
