Thing is though, while it incorporates some more pop-ish elements, it's still way off the mainstream when it comes to sound and composition. So it's neither this or that, and that's why I love it (and some might hate). Unique. We don't get that very often these days.

WOW! She closed out her set @ Moogfest this year with this and it was super intense live. I didn't recognize it until I listened to this and found a snippet of her set closer on KZbin. Fantastic mix here, so I'm definitely looking forward to the album. Side note, her voice sounded absolutely amazing at Moogfest and she did play two other new songs besides this one which were both great also.

Don't anybody shit on Taiga, this is how I discovered Zola Jesus and it's a very important album for me that kind of brings me back to the events of the time when I first heard it. I also like some of the earlier stuff, especially Conatus, though I find the old stuff a little bit rough around the edges sometimes, and "rough" is not referring to sound here. But Taiga is a very special album for me with which I have a very personal relation, one of my favs of all time. Exhumed sounds real good tho, can't wait for the album!

Bartosz Szafarz the people that were loudly vocal about Taiga I feel were scene people too insecure to let their friends know they liked an album with crisp production, that somehow felt threatened by an artist they associated with carrying that torch saying "only this" protest would have the freedom to do something else. The thing about ZJ is, music "fans" of her earlier, gritty noise material are maybe all about that, but she is clearly too curious a person to be put inside that box, "too many worlds to know."

Plastikman I assume you are referring to Zola's actual "Diamonds" cover! You know, it might be instinct to write off Taiga as selling out or dumbing down, especially if you are a fan of her earlier lofi material that more closely mirrored her own musical tastes. Until we remember, it isn't as though she went and hired a producer and said, "Make me a star," she was certainly seeing what would happen if she made songs that were more in line with modern production but still had such great songwriting, great and smart lyrics (!), I think it's as much an album to get to personally know an artist as there is. I mean Taiga sounds very personal to me. And yeah there are some slow-burners (Dust, Long Way Down) and I suppose Dangerous Days can be a little polarizing but songs like Nail and Hunger are like some of her most iconic numbers imo. Lawless? oh man. Hollow? Can't live without. I just wanna let it go, let it go. oh oh.
