But how does she know at this moment that the chicks have not taken the food from the dad? edit: and it looks like the chicks recognize the presence of the mom just by the sound of her 'landing' and her footsteps and open their beaks before she makes any vocal sounds at all. In fact she doesn't make any vocals when feeding them. She does so (or has to) only when she has taken the food from the dad. Probably because there were no sounds of her landing and then her jumping closer to the chicks.
