Hey mate, one thing that really helped me was... Getting a dog. It gives you that structure you're looking for, routine walks and feeds. It motivates you to go out and explore more , man's best friend. Literally. Rescue a dog and you'll save each other , I swear mate. 🙏🏼 Best of luck , you're doing great things.

Yes I was going to say the same. I really struggle with not having a purpose in life. Enjoying something for me isn’t enough. After raising a family and having a manic but fantastic career where I felt that purpose, it’s now hard being on my own. I rescued a street dog who was due to be put to sleep. Moved house to the coast as I felt he deserved to be able to run free and play ball and really enjoy life. I’m converting my ancient van atm but tbh would not contemplate going solo. I will show him the sites and the wonderful new walks and beaches and fill his life with new experiences. That is my purpose, but he was the one who saved me. Ps 5 mins in and subscribed. Already you have helped me. By talking so honestly and reading the comments, it would appear that you have identified a very real issue. That was your purpose today, and you nailed it. Thank you 🌸

i second jordans idea, getting a dog is probably the best decision you could make forget women lol. im a disabled ex serviceman and my hapiest years have been just me and the dog, i dont have the luxuey of your good health which would only enhance your experience, a dog gives you a routine, someone to care for, someone to talk to and an endless supply of love and genuine loyalty and affection. Even with my health issues i am out daily for a walk as my boy needs his routine and walk, plus he acts as a bridge a common focus for other dog people and im now part of a community of dog walkers. Even when im ill they phone and check on me, dog lovers are a great group to join. when out and about you get kids always wanting to say hello to your puppy no matter how old they are and before you know it you have parents joining the hello. trust me you rescue a dog he or she will rescue you back tenfold and you will never again experience loneliness. i cant even take a tom tit without mine following and checking im ok. Me im a jack russell man and have had two after a lifetime of dogs of other breeds, they are a cracking dog and well worth every minute you devote to them plus the ladies love a cuddly dog and ive made more friends and met more ladies than i ever have without the dog lol

After 8 years on the road, I’ve learnt that this lifestyle attracts people that are a bit damaged… Solo van life, boat life, etc. isn’t for most people - it’s isolating, and that’s the point… The majority of people who do this lifestyle alone want to be alone for a reason, usually to escape from some kind of trauma. Not all of us do this lifestyle by choice. Eventually you adapt and learn to live independently with yourself, by yourself. Although, it’s not necessarily something that’s easy to get used to. Van life doesn’t necessarily mean a cheap and easy life, especially in the U.K. Even a simple life can be complicated - you still need to deal with the normal stuff - work, illness, old age, money, etc… Also, maintaining and upgrading a vehicle costs money - it’s usually your biggest expense - especially when it all goes wrong (and it will go wrong). Sometimes you can be off the road for months waiting for repairs. Adapt to circumstances and use that time to relax at hotels, retreats, Airbnbs, etc. and plan ahead both mentally and financially for such eventualities - build an emergency fund. Sometimes circumstances demand that you escape the lifestyle for a short period - and you’ve just had a brief glimpse of that inevitability when your van glitched - roll with the punches, keep an emergency fund, use it to pamper yourself a little when things go pear-shaped. Oh, and keep a list of good auto-recovery drivers and mechanics in your contacts. 😉

I was excited , after two years of research on how to do Van life ( research from the comfort of home is way different than living it) I left work and cheap rent to do it. At 60 it was time to stop trudging. The first mini van lasted two weeks, the second; a vintage van, lasted 4 months and cost a lot in repairs while I travelled in it. It was lonely, the van community on Vancouver Island was to me, one that was a bit hostile as very few even said hello, though I met two wonderful people, one from France and one American and enjoyed conversation and a night under the stars together. As a female, it sucked that there were weird men stalking me at parks where I went. Overall though, I explored this beautiful island that I love and first discovered 33 years ago. I'm now in a temporary place for the winter, very nice digs and planning for spring. Being with my dog has helped and having an emergency fund, vital. You have great advice to impart and I am not quitting van life. It came down in the last three weeks to car camping in a very small vehicle I bought, so my van life dream took a wild turn :)

@@WillsWhereabouts girls have such a huge advantage too. They can just pimp themselves on the internet doing cam shows... basically tricking single older men into believing that they're single, when In fact, their hippie burnout handlers are recording the entire time. It's pretty disgusting when you think about it. But it's those very same girls who would talk shit on a single male who's doing the van thing by themselves. And these girls who claim to be going solo... I don't believe one word of it. It's much too dangerous out there, and they would be the first to break from lack of social contact

@@WillsWhereabouts Face it mate, you're just a wimp. 😂 Stop fussing and simply enjoy life. Being solo certainly doesn't mean being lonely or without purpose. There's plenty of time to enjoy other people's company...but often the best company is your own. You need to understand yourself and then everything in life will run smoothly free of stress. 😉 Live life like each day is your last.

At this point of the story, the knight needs a quest. What would it be, Will? 30 days, 30 pub parkups and interview a regular in every one. Convoy with a fellow solo vanlifer. Learn and teach us a new van kitchen meal or cooking trick every week. Drive to the Finnish Arctic circle to meet Santa and take a photo of the Northern lights - in the winter. Camp in the south/east/north/west points of the British island. 🧙🏼🚐

Hi Will I know exactly where you coming from. I'm 38 and last month my Mrs of 10 years decided she wanted to split up to work on herself (nothing I'd done wrong), that was on a Sunday 3 days later I was let go from my job, so I lost my job, Mrs and home in 3 days and at the grand age I am, I had to suck it up and move back in with my parents..... bit embarrassing. So I decided to convert my vehicle I have (Freelander 1) and hit the road for the first time on my own as Id always travelled with friends or the Mrs. It is tricky, I find the days arent so bad Its the night times that get you, you need to embrace the crazy in your head accept that its a part of you and work through it , little bit by little bit and eventually you'll find your inner peace. I feel this experience maybe a little bit more raw due to the fact you recently broke up with Wallace but now is the perfect time to work through all that and find yourself again. hoping you start feeling better soon bud and remember theres only one day a week you can do anything with and thats today, yesterday is gone and tomorrow isn't promised chin up bud

Great comment JayB. I guess many would be in the same boat as you and others. For me at 48 and split after 21 years of marriage and now living on my own. Work is work but its the evenings as you spoke about. Also having time off work for holidays etc can be something of a daunting experience. Ive found that having a daily routine or a a plan ahead works for me. I admire your spirit in the Freelander, what an amazing experience.

I don't live the van life, but I am a trucker driver here in the states. Life on the road solo can be depressing. I'm married so time away is hard for both of us, but it's also nice to have some of that alone time. After being on the road for 2 weeks, I'm ready for home and to have some husband time. I can only imagine not being married solo out there is for some pure torture, while some are happy being alone. Nice to see van life from someone who doesn't show only the good stuff. Give it time. I’m a solo traveller ( after 28 years travelling with partner/ kids etc.) and I hit the loneliness wall often when I’m travelling. What I find helps me is to have a plan…. An itinerary if you like, write down a route and stick to it. There’ll be great days and there’ll be shit days… it’s life brother. When you hook up with like minded people you’ll feel more positive I’m sure. I’m happily a solo traveller now but I know I’ll wake up sometimes and feel down for no good reason. Just hang in there. Your content is awesome btw.

Being an American, I have no idea how the National Trust works, but perhaps they may have seasonal jobs or something that would allow you to go to interesting places for a short period of time, build some community, make some friends, and then travel for a few months until your next gig. Maybe even some part-time volunteer work would give you some kind of purpose and potentially content for your channel.

I often think about converting a van and hitting the van life road too and to hear you speaking openly about the unspoken side of van life is refreshing! I guess the take away is, as you say, to embrace it. Embrace the time alone to experience what you can and if you ever fancy an adventure I’m sure there would be plenty of people wanting to join you! Hi Will, First of all, thanks for your video as I always looking forward to seeing them. This is part of my Sunday evening routine. When we are in a bad state of mind, everything seems much darker than it really is. In those moments, it's not a bad idea to not believe everything that we think and that our brain tells us. I'm convinced that at some point when you will be in a better place mentally, you will see things differently. The key is to stay positive. Again, thanks for the content. Stay strong.

Hey Will, I totally get what you are going through. I love the odd day or two away on my own in the van. Then there are times I feel like I am on my own driving aimlessly and nothing has a purpose if I am away too long on my own.

Just found you today. Subscribed because I love seeing the UK from someone's adventures. Having a whole entire other person in the van would get old and crowded...fast. I think you've gotten some great advice. Definitely plan things out ... loosely if need be, but having a plan gives you a nice little life map. But a dog or cat fills the void. Taking them on walks, (yes, cats can be harness/leash trained), will bring people to you! Be kind to yourself, you are doing what so many of us can't. You got this!

Thank you for being so honest Will. Loneliness is really tough and solo van life really brings it out. The person telling you not to overthink it just doesn't understand. I've been through this myself many many times in life and it's hard. We need social interaction and you're clearly a sociable person. Is there a balance you could find by having a base where you've got a social community and the van for getting out as well from time to time?

Just some ideas and suggestions to make it less lonely and more challenging (having something to focus). 1. Once a week or a fortnight make a public invite to your followers to meet at some point of your route 2. That point in the route you could choose it with a wee challenge in mind e.g. a wee trekking on the area or a wee activity to try. This will allow you to meet people regular, like when you were backpacking plus challenge you to do some research to find an activity on the area you are planning to explore. All the best as always

Hello Will. I have someone very close to me who has suffered from mental health issues his entire life and now has dementia to contend with. Life is cruel. I am torn wanting to help him constantly but also giving him his own space. He isn't very sociable as a person, but at the same time suffers from dire loneliness too. The key is a good life balance. Having time travelling on your own could be what suits you one day but you feel lonely, depressed and low the next day. People telling someone with mental health problems to basically 'pull their socks up' is so unhelpful and absolute bulls@#t. I think you need someone to travel with you some of the time, not continually just occasionally. That way you have the best of both worlds and get your own space when you need it. All the best of luck 👍

@SherryAnnOfTheWest
@SherryAnnOfTheWest 2 жыл бұрын
Dogs are wonderful companions, but then he's "tied" and can't do much that the dog can't do ... that eliminates a lot of hiking trails and attractions, restaurants, etc. You really can't leave a dog alone in the van much of the time except for very short periods in perfect weather. Also, since he wants to explore Europe, it can be difficult to get a pet in and out of other countries due to quarantine or legal restrictions on animals.

I will say to you, thank you for being so honest. Talking about how you actually feel. As a solo van person, I get what you mean. I don’t live in my van I just travel alone. I do have my dog and she is the best company ever. If I didn’t have her I’d say I’d feel the same as you. But I have those moment when I see couples and people together, and i feel alone. I Wonder why I’m doing this, why Iv chose to do this. But for me it’s a holiday. If I Waited around for some one I’d be stuck at home all the time. So a dvd on the telly in my van always makes me feel a little better. I think it takes time. But if it’s not for you it’s not for you. Try not to let it eat away at you. For now take one day at a time, enjoy what you have, in time you will just click. Either it’s defo not for you, or it is. Your van is lovely you have done a great job, just enjoy your hard work, relax and remember to just…. breath. ~X~

You really hit the nail on the head. Humans have a need to feel part of a group, to live with purpose and to contribute and share with a community. When you are constantly on the move and alone, you are denying those elemental aspects of your human nature. Of course, there are some people who love to be on their own and constantly on the move, but I think they are the exception.

I’m with someone else who said it… go easy on yourself. Along the road, you will not only meet crazy people but you’ll meet that community you are seeking. Give it time. Also, sometimes having no plan is the plan. If you need more of a routine,create one. Go to a spot for a while and work at those spots. For instance in the states they have programs for travelers… you can work at a park, camp sight, farm, etc. Look into it. Open yourself up to other travelers as well but use your instincts because some travelers aren’t good energy. Another thing, and I agree with someone else… get a pet. It will give you a companion and a schedule. Good luck and safe travels.

Never apologise for being real. I watched this and resonated with it so much. I built my van with all the thoughts in my head that life was going to be fun and laughter on the road...It was only when I realised that there is only so much fun you can have alone that it hit me that van life solo may not be for me. I have lived for 28 years alone (a few small relationships along the way) so I am no stranger to being alone. But van life is different as you have expectations of seeing and experiencing beautiful places and there is no doubt about it, when I am sat at the top of a beautiful mountain, I ache to have someone enjoying it with me. Don't apologise for being human. We are not built to live life alone. I, for one, appreciate this video because it has made me realise I am not alone in feeling these feelings. I hope you manage to embrace this feeling of being alone and it gets easier for you. Please know that your video may be a downer, but its real and genuine and will help others like you and me to see we are human NOT ungrateful x

Hi Will, I hope this does not come across the wrong way, I’ve been watching you for a while and I’ve taken notice to your latest videos, and this is me being honest from someone seeing from the outside, you sound like you desperately want a relationship to enjoy these things, but take it from me, some stranger on the internet, you need to be happy with yourself and be complete by yourself if you want to attract someone, this “neediness” will push any potential partners away, been there done that. I know it’s easier said than done and I could be completely wrong. Again don’t take this the wrong way, this is an honest opinion from someone who is aware of what’s going on! Stay strong and live life to the fullest. My moto is that there is always someone in a worst position than us, and it’s true! You’ve got this 💪🏽
