Intel report failed to add that back in 2003, Saddam realized he was beaten & ordered almost $1 billion to be withdrawn from the National Bank of Iraq. His son Uday gave the staff a note from Saddam & truckloads of cash were loaded onto trucks. Uday was killed soon after & Saddam was caught in his hiding place outside Tikrit Some of the cash was found in one of his palaces, the rest were never found

I read a story years ago that in 2003 Saddam thought the coalition was basically bluffing and that before invading the US would come to him to cut a deal, basically "you help us suppress AQ and deter Iran, and in return we don't invade." If that is what he was thinking, he was totally wrong, of course. But it makes a bit of logical sense, since Saddam was a secular horrible dictator, not a religious horrible dictator, and he was as anti-AQ as the US was. He was known for harshly suppressing religious radicals in Iraq. I wonder if he ever explained his thinking after he was captured. Too late to ask him, now, of course.

Mark Felton can hardly be called a historian anymore, these days. I'd recommend The History Guy if you want something actually factual. Indy Neidell is also great (WW1, WW2, now Korean War - all week by week). Perun too, obviously. Drachinifel if you're into older/naval history. Anders Puck Nielsen for Ukraine stuff. Historigraph is excellent too. Hypohistericalhistory is great, but probably won't hold your attention span, if you like the Fat Electrician. Sandboxx you probably already know. And Yarnhub just keeps getting better and better! But all of these depend on whether your prefer facts over delivery/style/entertainment 😅👍🏼

Saddam's history with the Baath party in his early days always seemed hazy to me. I'm interested in military backgrounds and his revolutionary days seem murky, it was clear he was used as a hitman or a thug, particularly since he took part in assassination attempts. Were the Baathist seen as a paramilitary group by some or did they have a paramilitary wing? Incidentally I remember this briefing where General Schwarzkopf remarked how Saddam had no background or training as an officer, "but aside from that he was a brilliant strategist" which was his way of reminding everyone the absence of a military background he had.
