There is an ongoing narrative that HK hates civilians. It's become an almost comical internet narrative although there are plenty of people who believe it. So today we discuss the reality of this perception and why it is misguided.

I feel like You have to be more sympathetic here. They care more about those contracts for a few reasons. First and foremost, those end users in those contracts are literally the primary driver of consumer demand. Why do people want the 416? Because cooler guys than us yeeted bin laden with it. Why do people want an mp7? Same groups of cool guys use it. Like it or not but there is a huge segment of the 2a population that emotionally justifies their purchases by looking at what the cool guys use. Why would they kill the proven method they have to drive demand? Secondly, anybody who had ever owned a business knows that contracts are far easier to manage at scale from a projection and production standpoint. No matter who you are, it’s really, really difficult science to measure probable consumer demand. Just my 2c.

@@justinwatt9402 you make a good point but it’s possible for a company bring as much money in as hk to expand and make a civilian divisions or just expand in general and create a legal team to work on what they can and cannot import. I don’t see why they couldn’t bring the g36 and if they made a mp7 in 9mm or 5.7 they could say it’s not for the military it’s a clone for civilians. They would have to figure it out these are just examples but I think it’s true that they don’t really care about us. They understandably yet sadly focus on the military, which is why we feel and say they don’t care about us. It’s like a parent that works too much of course they care about you but not really you might not feel that way 😂.

I understand that H&K is dealing with American import and German export laws, but can't they do what a lot of others have done and open an American factory to assemble parts and make 922r compliance parts? It seems to me like they would do amazingly if they started an H&K USA division and get rid of the hurdles they have to jump. I'm not saying doing that is easy, but they know they'd make bank and it might even save cost not having to ship every single thing. Maybe spread those savings to their customers?

They have. The reason their hand gun prices went down was directly from them opening up the “factory”in Georgia. The biggest reason they don’t start large 922r style rifle/pistol production in the us. Is for a magnitude of reason. Predominately is their tied into new 416a5 production/lawsuit for the German army. The second reason is the price point of their products. the American consumers won’t buy enough to justify setting up tooling.

So let's back up. He's not clashing on "HK hates or disregards me", he's just explaining WHY they DO disregard you. We don't have an army of customer service people in cubicles as far as the eye can see, this translates to: "yes we know that our customer service is bad and that we only have 2 repair dudes in the US, but that's because your civilian market isn't important enough to us to do anything differently." HK in fact DOES disregard not only private buyers but smaller government buyers because of its hand-in-glove relationship with the German government. It does not move any production to the US, regardless of how cost effective it would be over the long-term, because that's not its strategy or outlook for the future. HK overbuilds products for large, bloated some might say, government contracts. They can gold-plate products with respect to specifications and they charge accordingly, finding a clever way to increase margin. They sometimes get caught with this, the Mk 23 is a good example, having the intended client realize the poor design compliance with client intended use. Similarly, customer service for government clients is great. This is because when you look at customers as a function of what % of annual sales or projected sales, governments are THE big concern for HK. The private side is very literally secondary. This is just their business plan, not some baseless criticism. HK is a classic government firearms manufacturer. They don't read the private market, they read likely government demand. They know the company isn't agile enough to compete with other companies unburdened with the German restrictions, people may be reminded of HK's many financial difficulties over the last 2 decades. If HK were a private company with some sort of future vision, they would have relocated. They do not. They are an effete, blue-blooded European company who will be escorted into the future in a baby carriage by the German government and guaranteed a seat at the table as long as they still belong to the German government. If they ever want to get better, become more efficient, make more innovative products, expand their production capacity, they will have to leave the nest, at least in terms of part of their production and design. Beretta has figured it out, CZ has figured it out, Glock has figured it out, FN has figured it out, Sig has figured it out, Steyr has figured it out. HK really is that far behind the times.

HK got burned a couple times in the 80s and 90s by American import restrictions and deliberate political targeting (Bush Sr.) so they more or less abandoned the US civilian market. Add in German laws and it’s just not worth it to them to focus heavily on the US civvie market instead of their Euro military contracts. Beyond that, they don’t offer anything spectacular. The 416 sucks and is outclassed by KAC and LMT offerings, Glocks are superior to their handguns, and subguns are obsolete.
@ysince95

H&K wouldn’t have build 100% of there guns (F the wouldn’t even exist) if it wasn’t paid by and developed for or in request with the German Government/ Defense Department and being over watched by the German Parlament, this means H&K has to fulfill German law and contracts! Even if they would start manufacturing in the USA, German Government issued, decommissioned and prototype contracts would still have to comply (even after end of service), unless they wanna lose pretty much every right of all of there blueprints! Including every that’s been designed for NATO countries. Only pistols (meaning what German law understands as being a pistol) don’t fall under these specific laws, unless it’s still being used in service of course^^! To top all of that because the 4.6x30mm cartridge used in the MP7 is and was only designed for defeating small arms body armor and can’t be designated as an hunting or sporting cartridge after the fact, there will never ever be a civilian MP7 version. Trust me H&K is trying and doing everything the can within law to make civilian costumers happy! They know they can’t but still try each time the Design a new one for the civilian marked and trust me it’s hilarious expensive to do that within German law! It’s because of these laws that Made in Germany has such a high standard, F they even got a law for brewing beer 🍻 every German brewing company needs to withhold! It is what is! If they wouldn’t they believe standards would drop and in most cases it’s probably F true! Sig Sauer by the way moved there headquarters and development from Germany to the US. They left every blueprint except pistols behind!

If German laws are a problem isnt that why they have their HKUSA subsidiary? SIG Sauer used their US subsidiary as a trojan horse into US market and it was extremely successful for them in civilian and govt, they were of similar size to HK before but when they "americanized" their manufacturing capabilities grew to the point they are basically the second coming of Colt The fact HK hasn't done the same is concerning imagine if they bought out Tommybuilt to expand their American civilian market staff...

Personally I believe that the high ups at HK have the mindset like the government that citizens whether there or any other country shouldn't have firearms and only police and military should. I believe the only reason they do make anything for civilians is because they feel forced to. Ultimately it looks like all they care about customer wise is the police & military.

The first great comment. Mostly Americans commenting on this board thus far. We do business based on a demand curve, where supply eventually meets demand, and then outstrips it. The eurozone countries have a real cultural problem with firearms ownership, and by extension, the American laws and commerce that allow Joe six pack to own just about whatever he wants. HK choses to limit their sandbox in our side of the world to stay friendly to cultures of the EZ and other nations governments that butter their bread. Federal contracts are much cleaner, easier and more lucrative than selling into the US that is really 51 separate legal entities they must comply and pay tribute to. The US is also already very crowded with lower margin competitors. Sig has executed well on their entry, I’d bet they don’t do as well on EZ government as they did before the 90’s.

@@Josh-wv3mnBudget brands typically sell more volume though so that’s not why . Also there is less demand because there is more volume. People want what they can’t have and what is expensive and top tier. So yes there is a demand for those top tiers and that is because the lack of supply and due to all of that we have inflated prices on them. Most people cannot afford to dish out 3000-4000 dollars on one gun. I know people like to think they are paying for quality but they are paying for the name, reputation and hk tax which is basically just a simple way of describing what I just said about economics. So my point is yes there is a demand but no it’s not because the other brands are cheap, it’s a calculated decision by the company. Keep supply low to keep demand high and charge more because of that. The other option is to scale up to make more output and which ends up allowing them to lower their price, then lowers “street/store” price more because their is supply so no one’s willing to overpay. It’s just different business strategies and companies like Hk that take that route don’t care about us lol. Just my opinion 🤷‍♂️

🇩🇪🔱🇺🇸 As a German i can say, that’s 94.6% accurate… My country’s military weapon system laws prevents (HK) all of us ever having an MP7 semi-auto or any military marked/ issued semi-autos. On top because the 4.6x30mm cartridge (MP7) is been specifically and only designed for defeating small arms body armor and can’t be designated as an hunting or sporting cartridge after the fact, you never gonna see a semi-auto 4.6x30mm civilian MP7. No matter what… even if they would redesign it for semi-auto only and mark it SP,MR or what ever… as an example: The manufacture (in this case H&K) of German military weapon systems has to find a similar sporting or hunting certified cartridge (7.62x51=.308,5.56x45=.223) in order to get a prototype license to produce a civilian semi-auto only version + additional review’s and regulations follow. 5.56, 7.62 or 12.7 MG’s, 40mm GL’s or anti-armor specific cartridges such as 4.6x30mm or 12.7x99mm for example, do not even get a chance for a license/ review. LR-issued Sniper Rifles: .300WIN (G22) or .338LM (G29) for example can be owned by licensed hunters and LR-certified sport shooters. .50Cal (G82) or .50Cal (G24)? Hell no! Also, even if H&K would start manufacturing in the USA, German (Defence Department) Government developed/ issued and or prototype weapon system contracts would still have to comply, even after end of military service. Heckler & Koch Military Weapon Systems designed for or with the German Government/ Defence Department (BW*) are such as the H&K… MP5, UMP, MP7, G3, G11prototype, XM8prototype, G36, G95(416), G28(417), HK433prototype, MG3, MG4, MG5, GMW, AG-EGLM(M320)… only pistol’s (meaning what we Germans understand as an pistol, big difference!) don’t fall under these specific military weapon system laws. However, you… meaning (civilian) brothers & sisters in the US are way better off than us, especially with your gun license laws! Even if you have a German dealership or gunsmith manufacture license for the civilian market, law and order would prevent you from having or building full-auto weapon systems, this even includes aftermarket clone correct markings/ engravings and conversion kits! BW* = Bundeswehr - German Armed Forces If you ever wanna make a German 2A supporter sad & cry ask them about there right to carry laws^^ With best regards 🤙🏼

I'm really sorry that's the case, it's bull-schiesse lol I mean a lot of people might not necessarily know that (just like with fun cars), a lot of the places where the best guns are built are countries with an absolute nanny state of a government, now or in the past. I mean BMW Mercedes and Audi are all in germany (bavaria, but whatever lol), yet the TUV means that you can't even put an *exhaust* on your car that isn't factory, unless it comes from an approved company, with the approved paperwork, that makes tuv-certified parts and plays nice with the de government. It's so stupid. Just like it's stupid that you can't sell a semi auto version of the mp7 because apparently that means I'd be "proliferating weapons of war" by purchasing one. Uhh no. Government on both ends is absolutely stupid, pandering, self-serving and up it's own anii, which is the really frustrating answer. Guten abend, btw : p

I have been a fan of HK for decades. My first handgun was a USP. I got one as soon as I could after they were first released in the US. The serial number was in the low four digits. Over the years, they have slowly shifted to the back of my mind. As far as items like the MP7, the reasoning stated here is importation difficulties. First, I know HK has at least one US Factory which I believe is in Georgia. That removes that excuse. Second, it can easily be marketed as a pistol. Several other companies have done that such as Grand Power, B&T, and CZ. I believe that these companies are actually importing the guns and not building them here, yet they are able to do it. Third, how difficult is it to redesign a fire control assembly to make it semi-auto? Many other companies have done it. I would like to believe that it comes down to contractual obligations, staffing, etc., but I have been jaded by the actions of other companies with large government contracts such as Colt who seem to sway with the political winds- they willingly restrict sales of certain types of weapons to civilians based on "moral" reasoning, only to later change their mind because they need money and see an opportunity. Yes, I understand that HK is not Colt.
@teufelshundtactical
@teufelshundtactical Жыл бұрын
I did not go into all the reasons why it (civilian MP7 has not happened), but it is not as simple as you make it out to be. Just because they now have a manufacturing footprint here in Georgia does not automatically mean they can make whatever they want. Don’t assume that just because another company does something here that H&K can automatically do the same.

@@teufelshundtactical since I like HK, I really want to give them the benefit of the doubt. I did not intend to oversimplify and was not focusing specifically on the mp7. I just picked that as an example. Yes, I understand the video would be much longer if you were to go into detail about every reason, and I am sure there are reasons that HK does not want to or cannot divulge. I did not know that HK was that small as far as personnel goes. I was thinking maybe carefully vetted third party licensing to manufacture these items, but I'm not sure how that would turn out. HK has likely already considered this.

Hmm...not a convincing video. The HK94 existed as a civilian weapon for a long time. It doesn't take 30 years to figure out how to grease the wheels and side step the import laws to bring the sp5 if you care about making money. This is especially the case with weapons like the SL8, MR556, etc. Somehow HKs other German, Austrian, Czech, Slovenian, Yugoslavian etc etc competition manages to import quality weapons ready for the end user. No one at HK could figure out how to convert the sl8 state side and rake in dough at a competitive price?

I don’t think that H&K hates their customers. With that said I believe that a lot of us believe that they are disorganized and clueless regarding the consumer market. They have continued to remain set in their old ways and desperately need new leadership which continues to make excuses and doesn’t creatively look for solutions. Not sure which military contracts they are working on since B&T won the latest SMG Army contract and somehow Sig Sauer has managed to figure out the secret sauce between MIlitary/LEO contracts and the consumer market. It’s more excuses for an ineffective leadership at H&K. You want us to believe that the reason that they can’t get more product out the door is because of batch processing. You must think us all to be fools. I guess that they can’t find any new facilities or be able to purchase new CNC machines to increase production or perhaps they don’t have the heart or willingness to do so. H&K goes beyond hating their customers. If they did, they would at least have some passion. It’s much worst than that. They have ignored us; we are not worth their time or consideration. The fact that we should wait 1/2 a year and save our money to purchase a product is proof positive of their contempt for the consumer market. I’m still waiting to purchase a SP5 at a price that I will not be gouged by those selling on Gun Broker because a lack of product being produced by H&K.

Hi Guys, I understand some of the reasoning but I'm still at a loss. If one of the main issues is German law then why can HK USA not be focused more on the civilian market with their own factory. I also find it hard to understand knowing how large the demand is especially in the US why they would not produce these weapons at if not more than military contract level.

European countries and Canada, and likely others, have had the HK243, MR223A3 (semi 416A5) for years. So, while James’ character and honesty are beyond reproach, the well-known explanation that American and German red tape is the issue doesn’t always add up. It would behoove H&K, while previously predominantly GOVT/LE-minded, and having suffered bankruptcy or near-bankruptcy crises, to *prioritize the American civilian market* more than any other demographic. And to the excuse that the warfighter ought to take precedence (the bearded gentleman): among the most unAmerican statements I’ve heard. The RKBA is a natural Right, and the critical importance that We the People have what we need or want for our defense when we need or want it does not take a back seat to anyone working for the government. (Insert footage of police and service members’ going door to door to disarm victims of Katrina. Insert footage of militaries’ disarming their people throughout the 20th century.) Now, of course I want our service members to be optimally armed for their safety and mission success; it’s not either-or. However, if it’s the MIL or We the People, as an American, the answer is We the People every fucking time. And LE (read: modern-day redcoats) ought to be put on a do-not-sell list, the opposite of Cal. loopholes, essentially.
