I "lucked" into a '98 FXD about 5 years ago for $3.5k. Low mileage, reason for sale was it tried twice to throw him off if he exceeded 65mph. Fixed problem with new "isolaters". Nice and steady at any speed now. Am a Dyna Grandad

67 going on 68 here....lost my 54 pan/shovel to a fire a couple years ago (I had it since 1985) and replaced with a 93 FXDL...my inspiration though comes from an obituary I saw many years ago...a guy aged 98 had died, and the photo was of him and his BMW R75 which he was still riding at 94.....add if he could do it, I can too....hope to be riding in my 90's too!

I've currently owned my 81 Shovel now for more than 14 years, and it's my 4th one. NOTHING sounds like a Shovel with fishtails. It doesn't leak oil, and it's rock solid dependable. As long as you know how to turn a wrench occasionally, they are the shit. Anybody that says AMF Shovels aren't dependable doesn't know what they're talking about. Fuck those computerized fuel injected yuppie cruisers. As far as I'm concerned, you made the right decision, man. Evo motors and before were all built with the rider in mind, and can be rebuilt over and over again with parts that ARE AVAILABLE. Just don't expect to get anything at the stealership unless it's oil or tire work. They won't touch anything over 10 years old anyway. After '99 or so, Harley started building bikes for the shareholders, not the riders. Old iron rules.

That's the first year they took every other needle bearing out of the cam bearings so beware! When you can have some put in it , if it hasn't been done! Save yourself some grief. They did that 96 and 97 trying to save a dollar!

dude, you are part of a new wave. i have a '96 road king that suffered a cam bearing failure. we rebuilt the motor, added some really nice stuff like an andrews ev13 cam, and custom painted it a candy teal. while the motor was out, we went through the shocks, wiring, and detailed the frame. today, every time i ride it, someone wants to buy it. i have owned it since new, and at age 73, will never sell it. the local dealer tells me that people are seeking out the evo motor bikes now for the same reasons you did. best of luck with your heritage. ride on.

I have an 03 sporty with an Evo motor. I have revved it with the throttle all the way open and flames shooting out the back. I still ride that thing everywhere wide open. They are bullet proof. If it blows up I'll rebuild it stronger. Can't beat that old school sound

Dude - I have a 98 EVO Electra Glide FLHTCI that belonged to my dad. I bought it from a relative a couple years ago to keep it in the family. Starts up instantly. Runs Great! I've ridden MCs since I was 9 years old. I'm now in my late 50s. This past spring, I test rode a couple new Fatboys, and thought about buying one. Then I got on my bike to ride home, and though ..,man, this feels better to ride, I have no payments - I think I'll just keep this and customize it some! Installed LED Headlight and driving lights, have a good bluetooth stereo to stream music from my phone when I want (but sometimes it good to cruise with just the sounds of the bike and the road), lowered it an inch in the back, and getting ready to add as many stock chrome parts as possible to make it shine like a classic! The dealers tell me how much better I will like the new technology, but the riders tell me that you can't beat an old reliable EVO!

Good move man. I am 78 years old and have a 99 Softail Custom that I would never trade. EVO's are the best motor Harley ever made. And it only takes about 15 minutes to change carb jets if you change pipes or anything else. I bought mine 10 years ago with only 17, 000 miles on it. Rode an 84 Iron Head Sportster for 23 years before that.

I really enjoyed this clip. In my opinion, you made an outstanding move. I started on Ironhead Sportys, a 77 then a 78. Moved on to Shovels, an 80 and a 82. I bought my 92 FXSTC in 1998 and THAT'S where I stopped! I will go to my grave owning that bike because I, like you, know that the Evo motor is that good. It's dependable and easy to wrench on. I can totally relate. I searched for a nice Evo this fall and came home with a 1997 Road King. It had been sitting for some time and only had 13,400 miles. I swapped in a new battery and changed all the fluids and drove it 200 miles back home. I really enjoyed that ride and the way that old machine felt. It’s a keeper!

I have a '98 EVO Fatboy that I bought new. I put in a Screaming Eagle Cam, 6000 rpm ignition module, free breathing intake and tuned after market pipes. It hits its sweet spot at about 3000 and you had better be hanging on. It's never failed me or required any repairs, and I especially like the fact that it gets 51 MPG. SaddleTramp, you did good on your self. Enjoy.

What a revelation. AMF can be thanked for that Evo motor. As much as they were despised, they did some things right. Anyway, I've ridden Harleys for over 40 years and to me, the Evo is still a "new" engine. I like my Shovel, but if I had to buy a new bike, Evo it will be.

I LOVE your new (old) bike. I've always felt that a properly tuned carb has better throttle response than fuel injection (which I hate). I know that FI is supposed to be better in that regard but it doesn't feel that way to me. Also, I think silver and white is a killer color combo. So, all in all, you hit a home run with this deal.

I did pretty much the same thing in March 2019. Swapped my 2013 FXDWG for a 1987 FLST. Have spent a few weeks sorting out electrical gremlins (starting problems that started to appear as the weather got colder, and got to the point where I couldn't even jump it from the car, and the start solenoid would just chatter). Partner was giving me grief (something along the lines of "you traded a perfectly reliable bike for something that won't start!") but once that was sorted it's so much better to ride, with way more personality. I don't need the latest and greatest, nor do I need to keep chasing more cubic inches. Congratulations on your purchase.

Guzzis are so good you can't lose sticking with that, either, or adding another. They go cheap used because no one knows about them. I have two Evo FXRs and two Evo Sporties and worked on many others as a multibrand mechanic. You'll love the Evo aftermarket. I suggest buying an FXR to grow old with because that was my plan in 1988 and I still ride that bike. (Temp down for a new V124 and a Baker box but the originals are both perfectly sound, I just wanted more ponies.) Buy a later Evo big twin with the Denso starter and splined shaft gearbox (just look for the Denso starter). It's a buyers market so be somewhat picky. Download or buy the factory service manual and parts book for what you've chosen then study while you search. Chop Cult and Harley Tech Talk forums are great resources, while KZbin is merely a supplement. My nick is farmall on Chop Cult.

Brother I'm going to tell you what you did was the smartest thing I had a 1997 FXDWG and i sold her. Shes gone now for just about 9 years and I'm looking on the net to buy her back Evo motors was Harley's come back after AMF Took over the company and what brought back a true American bike the Evo in my book is one of the best motors Harley made I love all the old school bikes and to me you can push that Evo to the limits and still be strong I own a 2016 Road King great bike it was the Rushmore model they did good with it but it's not an Evo I bought a 1992 1200 Sportster for my wife because I love working on it. I now also pick up a 2002 FXD super glide yes it's a twin cam but also a carburetor motor and it kicks ass so my Opinion you made the right move, good luck with her and be safe 👍👊

I don't run any ethanol in anyting carbureted! But ethanol will even eat the rubber hose off going to fuel injection, so you don't need ethanol in anything with a rubber hose on it!

@@stonewall45 fortunately I'm in NC and have a station 1/2 a mile from me that sells non-ethanol. Worst case scenario you have to buy some Lucas ethanol treatment. Walmart has it, it's green. Non-ethanol here is about a buck more per gallon but it's worth it! It was 350 per gallon last year that's premium non-ethanol 93 octane, it's 325 this year. Use Google and find the nearest station to you that sells it and buy 10 or 20 gallons at a time. Treat it with some seafoam if you going to let it sit, seafoam has fuel stabilizer built into it, you can get that at Walmart also. If I'm going on long trips I just carry a bottle of ethanol treatment with me. Sometimes you can't find ethanol free on the road.

The best part I like about evos , you can run a set of ignition points and condenser ...and if you buy the blue streak brand they have a stuff return spring that will not float out at high rpm .. If you want more power give it an S&S top end and if you want it smooth with no vibration you get your crank rods and Pistons balanced at precision balancing of Indianapolis ..I built a shovel 37 years ago as it was the first Harley I had ever rebuilt ..had it balanced at precision balancing of Indy ..and my old bike is still on the road today with the same rebuilt engine that is the original that has never been apart since I built it in 1982 ..it's been through 4 or 5 owners since and just the other day I seen my old bike at "the shop" in terre haute Indiana . Still with the same paint job on the engine as I had painted it ..and the same chrome bolt kit was still on it ..looking at farther I could tell it had never been apart since I built it. ..I truly believe the balance job done the trick ..there is no comparison after you have one balanced

I just did the same! I am a younger Harley rider at age 39. Switched 2013 Road King to 1996 EVO Road King. Pumped it with EV27 cam, 10:1 pistons, Adjustable pushrods, S&S Super E carb, etc... Wow, what a difference in ride quality, pumped EVO leaves 103 TwinCam behind in the dust, sound and mechanical feel are way superior. Missing ABS, cruise control and keyless from the newer bike, but those are minor things. Heck, even air shocks on the old Road King work much better than the ones on the new one. Never regret the switch and not going back! 😎

Im 57 & love the EVO & I love that bike you traded for & I would’ve made the same deal, as long as you’re happy & enjoy that bike is all that matters. I ride a 1995 1200 Sportster & love it, never had any issues with it at all & I ride it hard. Good luck with that beautiful 25yr old gem!

I have a small Dyna performance shop and you did great. A bolt in cam, single fire ignition and coil, a good set of ignition wires, and a 2 into 1 exhaust will surprise you. Look into the lifter noise, don't neglect it. SHINY SIDE UP BROTHER.

First bike 1990 springer. Still have it, still ride it, still love it. Reminds me of the good ole days when life was simple. I’m 49 and remember all the “old” guys riding shovels wearing their patches “ though I walk through the valley in the shadow of death I will fear no EVO”. They hated em’. Called em’ yuppie bikes. Maybe that was true then maybe not? Nice to see old become cool again. My 2 cents worth. Keep em’ rolling

I have a 2001 Fat boy I got rid of the cam chains and set it up with gear drive cam. No more problems with cam chains. When from 88 to 95 inch motor.

Great looking bike. My son just bought his first bike, a 1-owner 1993 Evo Heritage Classic with only 18K miles on it, for a steal! It sounds just like my old Shovelhead bikes did, probably because they share the same bottom end and are both single cam. It's all stock and runs great but future plans call for a Mikuni carb and mild cam to improve the performance. 😎👍

Andrews 27 cam is the best for those Evo's! But when you do that, use some fuelly lifters because stock lifters will fail at 50,000 miles, more lift more pressure on those rollers on the lifters!

Hey sometimes bigger and newer is not necessarily better...those 80 inch EVOs are nice and make a sweet sounding engine / exhaust rap. Find an Andrews cam....even nicer. Congrats your Nostalgia is beautiful, great bike and color combination...after you sort a few things out she'll be even nicer.

I have a 95 flstn wouldn't trade it for twin cam! Mine had an issue starting one time and one of the wires was loose on the switch that's what you need to check first! Originally that bike didn't come with those running lights it only had a headlight, turn signals on the handlebars. It also vibrates more because it's a frame mounted engine. And if it has Andrews 27 cam in it or any high-lift Cam and you think it may have stock lifters in it it will only go about 50,000 miles before the lifters lock up! So then you put some fuelly lifters in it. I was younger when I bought mine and the older I get the harder it rides! Wish I had bought a Fat Bob. The way the rear shock setup on those bikes it seems like it's in a bind.

Saddle tramp, in 1975 I was driving a very clean Olds 442. A friend had a 1965 Impala that I had a soft spot for. When I told him that I would trade straight across he told me my car was worth more, I knew that and traded. I never regretted it or looked back. My friend ,after 4 twin cams I now am riding a 2003 American Iron horse with a S & S 107 evo and love it. It has c a carb on it and love tinkering with it. I personally like the tc 88. Got two 67,xxx 60,xxx on the other. Both carb bikes. The cam tensioner is a weak point but other then that love it. Almost bought an evo though.

'91 Heritage rider here. Love the Evo motors. In my.opinion, Harley never should've phased away the thing, cause it runs better (Smoother) than my father's '06! It has a S&S Super E carb, OEM Harley Fishtails, an Andrews EV27 cam, and a nice ignition setup. 26,000 miles. The engine has never let me down, the only time it wouldn't start was a bad ground, other than that, runs like a top.

The Evo is the best engine that the company ever made. Just check inner cam bearing, which must be changed if it's an INA to be replaced by a Torrington. I would not own a TC. (American Virago)

It took AMF 6 years to develop the EVO motor they look at the problems the shovelhead motor had and they created a motor that made more horsepower at a lower RPM and what brand cooler and had better oil consumption they are most reliable big twin motor the motors designs since the separation from AMF have had problems left right and Center the fact that people prefer Evolution Motors to twin cam shows that newer is not necessarily better Evo Motors are rebuildable forever imagine if AMF did not sell Harley all of the Evo Motors would have AMF on the gas tank and everybody would be singing their praises I love my Evo Sportster 25 years old 330,000 miles on her still runs like a top her reliability has surprised me I never thought she would be so good and if it didn't cost so much money I would put a kicker kit on her

Great looking bike. You did good. I have a 1997 RoadKing, fuel injection. Did a lot of mods ...21” front wheel, z-bars with 4” risers , custom seat, made brackets to move custom 10” coil over shocks forward 5” to give the bike a old look. I have a roadking 103 and recently bought a 95 fxstc and i get what your saying 100 percent, i feel more excited more happier on that 80 evo then with my modern 103, i really enjoyed working on taking apart the carburator and cleaning it out, i enjoy the more mechanical motorcycle then the modern more electronic motorcycle if you get what i mean. congrats.

You definitely traded up. My daily ride is a stock (except for carb/pipes) 1982 FXB Sturgis. One of the best bikes Harley ever built. I wouldn't hesitate to ride it to either coast, right this minute. I'm not really interested in post 86 HDs (gotta have a kicker... the 86 Evo FXWG was the last factory Harley with a kickstarter). At some point it seems like it's become a matter of complexity for its own sake. I was shocked when I heard a coupla years ago that HDs had fuel pumps. WTF? Good luck with your FLSTN!

I had variety of bikes during my years of aging from teenager in India...Rajdoot, Bajaj Chetak, Vespa, Royal Enfield, Ind-Suzuki...and then in 1993 in USA with Honda Nighthawk 250...got out of that in 1997 and then got back again with 1977 Honda Goldwing..kept it till 2015 and traded that with 2005 HD-FLHTCUI...got some GoPro video lately riding that around Texas...

It is stupid to design a machine to shake itself to death just so that someone having a midlife crisis can convince themself that they are masculine. Millinials want a bike that will roll into a corner with confidence and roll on the throttle without unnecessary vibration. As to why you are upset that the new motor has 4 valves, I don't understand. Why do you hate a more efficiently designed head?

Good move ! I'm in my early 60s and bought my first Harley, a Flat Head, in 1976. Currently running a 98 Evo Super Glide with a Wide Glide front end. Its got an S and S super e carb and runs like a train. Way better than the two twin cams I've owned. Evos are lovely motors ! Enjoy ! Mac, Kent, England.

I hang with a 50 year hd mech: I have 03 softail carb and put in new Chain setup and oil pump hyd plate . Going 95 “ and just put in cvo 103 cams. Cams !!! What a diff - Get rid em epa cams first thing !!! Next mikuni carb - My buddy still rides his 87 elect glide. Hd mech bike is an EVO !!! Had a twin cam b engine with rod out come in . We put in A flywheels in the B Engine. Tossed balancers and chains. No more vibration than an evo - Twin cam just bigger bore - Right on glad your happy.
