I am from Southern Odisha ,I have seen people collecting food and "Dana" when I was a kid for their journey to Kashi and uphill Badrinath .Every single households will come to perform Dana coz they themselves could not go . DANA was big thing then it was no less than pilgrimage . We knew men who left village mostly will die walking on foot with fatigue and disease .It was like final Adieu a big ceremony ..
