I once had a professional race car driver tell me tires do 2 things very well, braking and turning, but they're not designed to do both at the same time. Alot of wisdom in that statement and it seems to me that the best decenders figure out how to blend the two actions without crossing the threshold of traction. Quite the science. You get it right most the time Brian, but the times you don't you always take it like a champ. We can all learn much from each other's successes and failures, thanks for being willing to show BOTH on this channel.
@makantahi373115 күн бұрын
yes, at the safe driving course (car) they emphasize this, the total adhesion force during braking/acceleration in a corner is divided into components, the more you use one component, the less the other
@StopTheRot15 күн бұрын
I’m not a great descender, so could do with tips. Is there a reason you decide to hit the apex early on a lot of right-handers? Is it to do with cars? It just looks a bit sketchy.
@juncearyoutube333615 күн бұрын
they can do both, but if you´re turning a lot, you can´t brake a lot, and viceversa. like you said is all about applying the right amount of braking when you´re already turning, without crossing the threshold, some corners you can apply full brake and then just turn, but in many you have to combine both at some point.
@cmonc198415 күн бұрын
Racing drivers use the brakes not only to slow the car (or bike) down but also to bring the weight of the vehicle forward and thereby increase front tire grip so they can corner faster, it's called trail breaking. It works with bicyles too but it requires skill and finesse and if you overcook it you crash, obviously.

Ah, denial of responsibility. "There was no reason, it wasn't my fault, it was just pure bad luck, could have happened to anyone." Sorry, but there's always a reason you lose grip. A damp patch, loose pebble, dust, a drop of oil or diesel... the list is endless. You know, the usual things you find on public roads. Narrow, slick, high pressure tyres aren't very forgiving at the limit. When you take chances, especially on roads you don't know, it will eventually come back and bite you. You were lucky there was nothing coming the other way when you fell. Too many times you crossed in to the other lane on limited visibility bends, assuming it would be safe. It's all good, clean, safe fun... up until the moment it isn't. 🙄

it's unusual that you haven't fallen before, because considering that the entire road is made of white asphalt, which is made of limestone, which polishes very quickly and becomes slippery even on dry surfaces, and at the same time absorbs grease/oil, which when wet comes to the surface and even more increases slipperiness. there are a lot of such roads in my country and you have to be careful because such asphalt is often only in the bend. even WRC drivers complained about the slipperiness and asked for advice on how to drive on asphalt with "1000 shades of grey"

Frost heave. At least that's what we call them here in the NE USA. But where there's no freeze/thaw there can be water under the road surface disrupting the bed. The road bed freezes and thaws and flexes the asphalt and eventually cracks and worse. It was no coincidence you lost traction where there were cracks. Not that the cracks caused the crash, but they indicate an unevenness in the surface. Pushing the limits of your tire traction it takes very little for the friction to break. Glad you're OK. I'm very familiar with this and much higher speeds in mountains and now at an older age still like to have my fun, but give myself a bit more margin for error. Thanks for sharing.

I used to go with customers on test drives in cars they were seeking to potentially buy. They would often drive the car in a manner that indicated that they were in and around the limit of their capability. I would be forced to remind them of the legal speed limits. I would often ask who was their favourite driver? I would hear names like Schumacher, Hamilton, McCrae etc I would then remind them that I had seen all of them crash at great speed. Every time I have had a similar incident on the bike I have reflected as you did that I was not being reckless and watching this video knowing the outcome before hand many of us watching may have felt that other corners you took prior had a greater potential for a mishap. Descending on a bike is a thrill because of the speed and the challenge that the terrain brings towards you with a shorten time to assess and make the appropriate decision, but let us not let the "gravity" of the situation escape any of us. The contact patch despite increasing tyre width is tiny and we are all in control until we are out of control. I am glad you are not seriously injured 🙏🏿

1. as amateur road cyclists - I think a v. good indicator you are packing too much HEAT descending is crossing OUT of your lane - this is not the TdF and you are NOT Tom Pidcock on CLOSED roads 2. passing other riders while descending is fine but doing it on a blind left hand corner is not smart - you are rolling the dice 3. having to correct your apex trajectory due to an oncoming car while doing a blind let hander means you are NOT in control of your bike - you are risking it 4. post-rain the SLIPPERIEST part on the road is not the wet-dry patches - it is the CENTRELINE painted WHITE - absolutely killer front -rear wheel slip surface 5. the corner you bailed on - those DOUBLE AROOW BLUE signs are a WARNING that this is a TIGHT corner and NOT uniform radius due to that BIG WALL geography in front of - the road builders did the best they could - it begins soft then progressively BITES harder as you round it - just LOOK at that bend at 7:09 !!! - its TIGHT as F - your attempt to oversteer to later compensate placed your carbon rim edge on the ROAD and you were essentially riding on the edge of your rim - that is why you can hear that high-pitched scrape before you kissed le tarmac - angled and leaning over way beyond bikes limits - you were packing 49 kmh at that moment - you have to ask yourself - really ? 6. I prefer to have my hands on the hoods rather than the drops when descending - I find I can feather the brakes better and also avoid the instinct to grab the brakes HARD when sliding out 7. dangerous spot to be stopped - oncoming cars and or cyclists will T-Bone you for sure - its a BLIND corner - they will not see you until it is too late 8. NEVER NEVER NEVER take your hands off the bars when descending - worse to do so to wave "HI" to others - head nod or shout out will do just fine 9. damn you are still descending at 53 kmh with an audibly damaged bike ? 10. blind corners are DANGEROUS - I have had the exhilarating experience of hitting a blind left-hand corner while descending 65kmh to find a TOURIST in an SUV passing in MY lane - to my right was a wall barrier and a 400 foot cliff drop - the distance between that and this wankers mirror was 1mm wider than the width of my shoulders - hitting head-on into the grill did not look too inviting - these days I try to PREDICT what MIGHT happen before it does 9. sucks to go down - we should all watch and LEARN - descending is HARD - you should avoid taking so many risks - with oncoming traffic you are asking for TROUBLE I give you a 6.5 / 10 for SAFE DESCENDING skills - tbh I probably break half of these faux pas myself but .... need to do better
