Solid explanation! I always keep a foam gun on hand for clients who have off-road vehicles. These work well on loosening up the mud on vehicles and getting it to slough off at the beginning of the wash. You don't get mud sprayed all over the place and it removes a good percentage of the mud very easily. I know that's a bit rare for detailing, but where I live it is actually common :)

I wouldn't waste any money on that foam gun, foam Cannon is the only way to go.

It’s all personal preference! Foam cannons work great as well. For those that only have access to a hose, foam guns are a great choice.

With the foam canon the particulates float into the foam. When contacted the foam acts as a paste, with particulates acting as an abrasive. With the foam gun you can keep the surface constantly flooded with water which floats the particulates away when contacted. Each have their pluses and minuses. Foam cannon being better at pre washing and rinsing, foam gun being better with the contact stage.
