@@AverageAlien you physically can't stop as fast as a modern ABS system on uneven surfaces. You can't regulate all 4 tires individually, the computer can. Even planes use them, because manual brakes would physically desintegrate the tires in a matter of seconds. And in the event of a failure you expect everyone to know precisely how to prevent brake lockup perfectly? It's all well and good to know the method, but when you're in an active situation with 3-4 seconds to react, that's not gonna be at the forefront of many people's mind. ABS (like traction control) is a reactive tech in the sense that it only kicks in when the driver has done something wrong. ABS won't start working until the wheel has had a difference in speed compared with other wheels, so if you're a good driver and want to threshold brake - you can keep doing that and it won't have any negative effects on you. But, because there are alot of people who might not be the best drivers, it's a great backup in most cases.
@julienlevray862710 жыл бұрын
Even if you are a great driver, the abs will surpass you because it can work on all 4 wheels independantly, and at a very faster rate than you would. In tricky situations like @3:50 you will never beat abs
@owensansom842110 жыл бұрын
Julien Levray Ahh, yeah, sorry about that...my comment was a bit ambiguous I guess. I totally agree with you, what I probably should have said was; if you're someone who thinks their gods gift to driving, then ABS won't get in your way, it's reactive, so it's not going to take control of your vehicle until you've done something wrong. If you're a great driver and think you know it all...then keep doing what you do, but don't bag the tech that has the potential to save many lives. I hope that clears up what I was saying....thanks Julien for highlighting my ambiguity.
@julienlevray862710 жыл бұрын
Owen Sansom ok i see what you meant. You're right, a guy who is into driving doesn't want to have 'driving aids' to be between him and the car... But sadly people often don't get that it's not only an aid, it really increase the braking performance :) Cheers
@owensansom842110 жыл бұрын
Valoro85 Clarification is required here I think (please re-read my initial comment) - I'm totally agreeing with you on this...except for the wheel speed different, ABS will act when there isn't a wheel speed difference but only as a part of a Stability control, but just ABS like we're referring to here relies on measuring a difference in wheel speed before it starts to act. What I was saying in my initial comment was, if you like to do your threshold braking, or parachute braking, or anchor braking...you just keep doing that...then, if you stuff it up (which i'm agreeing with you, people probably would stuff it up in an emergency), ABS will kick in and save your skin. For this reason, I can't understand why people would ever want to have a car without ABS...it should be mandatory across all vehicles; trucks, busses, motorcycles, prams, etc... I'm glad that there's other people that believe this tech is valuable, I must've written that first comment in a really weird way as it seems to only be me that really understands it. - haha! no matter...ABS FTW! Good-day :)

I think it should be important to note that you can achieve similar breaking distances without ABS by modulating the break pedal. I know this may be difficult in emergency situations, but I think it's important to know, especially when driving a car without ABS.

Yeah you can even brake better than ABS, but that requires practice and experience. Also as you said, in emergency situations it is very difficult to actually brake at 95-100% of the cars ability, so the ABS system helps a lot there

It depends... in GTA V, there is ABS, just a bit limited. You can brake & steer at the same time. In GTA IV though, there is literally no ABS on some vehicles (older ones, muscle cars, etc) while modern ones have ABS. You can't turn the slightest bit while braking there.
@CQ3138 жыл бұрын
Hardest car I found to brake and steer at the same time in GTA V was the Karin Sultan. You can push your trigger at 5-15% and that's about it before the wheels lock up. The way I turn in GTA sometimes is to brake hard, and accel while steering (so come to turn, brake at max, let go of brake, accel again). In my experience, it makes the steering a lot easier, but again, only in some situations.

I had Bosch ABS in my -93 Caprice Classic, and when I noticed how bad it made the whole car in winter, I disconnected it, and only connected it to the annual MOT. In snow/slush conditions, the braking distance was three times longer with ABS, and the Bosch system had a design flaw that made the brake pedal come up under the foot while sitting in traffic lights; the front wheel sensors collected metal dust, and that made them sometimes give false input to the ABS module. So, the car was much better without ABS in any conditions, and when acting up, made the car dangerous as the car wanted to start moving while in the red lights. So, as insurance companies have noticed already, ABS does not actually improve safety. The main reason to have it in all cars today is the useless urge to have disc brakes at the rear axle, and to have those operational and not corroding stuck, the brake system must use them more than with old pressure regulating system. And, we do not have good parking brakes any more because of that ,because no more big drum brakes...

What kind of ABS was it? Rear wheels only? How many times per second can it pump the brakes? Steering at full ABS could be a fun sport. Some sort of obstacle course which you have to get through using ABS, starting speed set equal, different speeds for experience level.

I love how everybody is saying "down shift" or "gearbrake." But yet not one person said to pump the brakes. I live in Maine, and (with snow on the ground) pumping the pedal with no abs is far superior than abs. I can't tell you how many times I've almost gone through intersections, pulled out in front of cars, nearly rear ended people, all because I was going 5 or 10 mph with an abs equipped vehicle and the abs freaked out, and now I'm picking up speed. Locking up your tires helps in the snow. And if you need to steer release and reapply. Don't believe me? pull your abs fuse and try it. And for the people who believe that down shifting is really going to work for you, go 35mph and slam on the brakes. by the time you get to first gear and let out the clutch, you are almost going to be stopped, and might even buck when the engine stalls. Its funny, I remember myself saying the same thing about downshifting, of course, I was 16 and knew everything. Then I got into and emergency stopping situation. There is no time to think, just react.

Removing ABS saved my life. The brake distance was shorter and when I actually press the pedal the vehicle stops viciously instead of just casually slowing down till you hit the back of the car that just pulled out.... ABS is a combined effort braking. It uses 80% braking system to slow down and about 20% incoming objects you will be hitting to a full stop.

Do you have 4 brake pedals or something? One of the advantages of ABS, is that different levels of braking power can go to different wheels. Especially in variable conditions, you will not be able to slow down as fast with equal pressure on the left/right side of vehicle.

For anyone who has practised minimizing his stopping distance, trail braking, cornering trajectory, countersteering and is well aware of his vehicles handling and capabilities without being cocky a non ABS vehicle will react much quicker to maneuvers, will brake harder as the driver shifts the weight of the car forward by braking and will swerve faster when the brakes are released and the grip is transfered sideways. For normies it truly is a life saver.

Worst case scenario is when you try to brake on ice or snow and the wheels lock up even with ABS.
@TheOriginalEviltech8 жыл бұрын
If all 4 wheels stop at the same time ABS just assumes that you have stopped and doesn't kick in. On a grippy surface rear wheels lock up before front wheels and that's how ABS knows the car is still moving.
@derbigpr5008 жыл бұрын
That doesn't happen in new cars. They never fully lock with ABS.

True. Yaw sensors are good for safety, bad for fun
@Djhg20008 жыл бұрын
+Eviltech You don't need an accelerometer if you write the software correctly. For instance there's no way for a wheel to go from say 30 km/h to 0 in less than 100 milliseconds without slipping. Also not all wheels will lock up at exactly the same time in real world scenarios. That is not to say they are completely useless for other systems like ESP but ABS itself should only be concerned with not locking the wheels. Seriously, software engineers are getting too lazy these days. There was a time not too long ago where the entire car had less processing power than your current phone, yet they were more reliable than modern car electronics because everyone had to care how efficient and stable their code was. Or as the saying goes; "the easiest way to solve a software issue is to make it a hardware issue".

ABS is automatic Cadence braking, a good driver doesn't need ABS. A car without ABS and the same brake setup can generally stop faster than one with ABS. ABS and cadence braking are used to allow stearing while breaking without locking the wheels. This is why racing cars don't have ABS.

@FCFordLord8 жыл бұрын
David Pulsing the brakes is very ineffective. ABS itself is essentially just to let you steer and brake together. I've tried ABS vs disabled ABS on many vehicles, all of them stop shorter without it - the pulsing often doubled stopping distance.
@Heidegaff3 жыл бұрын
Not only ABS is not safer, it's actually dangerous if know how to properly drive (and brake) and you're put in a car that decides by its own how to brake.
@sermerlin111 жыл бұрын
Why on earth would you dip the clutch while hitting full brake to avoid collision...??? You should switch to lower gear and use clutch for additional breaking power since engine itself slows down the car when going fast and shifting to lower gear... Just like when you go down the steep hill... you put in first gear and slowly break and you have no problems but if you dip your clutch and break... Youll only have breaks as your stopping power.
@glenkilloran7911 жыл бұрын
Full braking is a function of friction. If the tires are at maximum friction, adding engine braking will do nothing to help. Simple physics, you can't add more friction than exists, no matter the method. It would be like saying, if you lock up the tires, into a skid, just push harder on the brakes and you will stop faster...nonsensical.
@sermerlin111 жыл бұрын
Glen Killoran Except that tires arent always at full friction when u break... You can easily lock the wheels without reaching highest breaking potential. Same reason why with abs you have more stopping power because abs is unlocking the wheels for you in the panic attack when you lock the wheels and while unlocking wheels you can break more and slip less. Yeah if you lock your wheels with brakes no engine breaking will help you but if you break hard enough not to lock the wheels and slip on the way and apply engine breaking you will have more stopping power.
@digosantista11 жыл бұрын
Glen Killoran Since I was attacked when I said that you shouldn't break with clutch fully pressed and someone told me that they were "giving licenses away". I'd say that these people should watch Ayrton Senna driving a regular car in a track. Pay attention to his left foot. Does he press the clutch in all breaking points? I don't think so... Or maybe he was not good enough for you? facebook.com/photo.php?v=228750270643506
@AlesHoly10 жыл бұрын
Cássio Rodrigo Peluso OMG, this is not some racing, it is emergency braking. You're supposed to declutch so that engine inertia doesn't add up to wheels inertia which would slow down ABS reaction. Also when you slow down to some point you would unnecessarily stall the engine.
@sermerlin110 жыл бұрын
Aleš Holý It doesn't matter if it's a race or not. If you don't break fast enough u might lose the whole car (even life). Therefore additional engine breaking with clutch can mean slightly more wore off clutch or a smashed car. :)
@Jimpank9012 жыл бұрын
the engine brake is not making the wheel turn, it is slowing it down. With pressing down the cluthch the wheel rolls free. I have locked up the wheels on my car with engine braking, but not by braking normally with ABS. If the wheel rols free it have less chance to lock up. But in this scenario it is a emergency brake and then you normally press down both pedals at once without thinking of it.

Firstly, ABS does not shorten braking distances. It only shortens it when you lock the wheels. My ABS is my old SAAB stopped working during the winter. No locks. You can brake exactly the same distance without it The need for this was made so regular people don't have to learn threshold braking. In fact, compared to threshold braking, ABS takes LONGER to stop you. In a split second moment, most people don't have the braking discipline to break at the maximum threshold in a panic moment.

This is questionable. Every time I drive on a slippery surface I always do threshold braking and I stop on a shorter distance than with ABS working. As soon as the ABS kicks in I feel the car skating. I'll give credit to the ABS system for the steerability and stability on unexpected situation on the highway. But sometime it is not desirable in terrain like deep snow, mud, sand or a dirt road.

I aknowledge how ABS helps in the safety of the car and saving lives. I also understand that not every driver is a race car driver. But this clip demonstrates a wrong situation. No one who really knows how to drive his car locks the wheels so much in a panic situation. If you want to have the best chances to live in the road you have to learn every reaction of your car. This means practice again and again. I say again. ABS is life-saving but this video demonstrates a complete ignorant driver in order to show how ABS helps.

Without ABS, you *can* actually come to a halt earlier. ABS pumps the brakes, since the brake lights flash when ABS is activated pretty much. Humans can threshold brake, and this might allow you to, again, come to a halt earlier.
