Really practical, simple to follow, reminder of what needs to be done, and how simple it is, Great job

A couple of months ago I started working for a DNO in my country. What you do here is the right thing to do and simple to do, yet people get complacent and accidents happen. Now translate this to the 10 kV or 20 kV part of the grid, and you'll understand why adhering to protocols is so important.

I really like that display of old consumer units and other electrical items in the background as well as your very well made demonstration board!

I've actually added to them since Christmas. Yes the old demo set up hasn't seen much action recently. Although I did have to borrow one of the batten lamp holders off it for a little job.

Nice video. I'm most conscious of it when working alone if the point of isolation is on a different floor or even building. The risk is more obvious then. I think it's mainly domestic settings where the risk feels lower but actually isn't. I have had a customer turn the power back on while I was in the loft in order to make me a cuppa once, which underlines the point. (Luckily I heard the bathroom fan start up a fraction before I closed my cutters on a live cable!)

Wow Tim, yeah customers taking over and not realising what they're doing to the poor spark in the loft!

Nice summary, can't stress it enough really. Its a hassle sure but a ride in an ambulance after a lick from the angry wall pixies is a hassle too 😂I had a callout monday night chasing a fault on a industrial pan washing machine had to lock out the isolator 10 times was a pain in the ass but its just part of the cost of doing business.

Angry wall pixels 🤣 yeah they'll get you when your guard is down!

Non-contact voltage testers are useful as they will still detect live wires with an open-circuit PEN fault that could actually make someone using a double pole voltage tester believe the circuit is dead, when it is actually still live. Like you said though, non-contact voltage testers should not be used to show that a circuit is dead.

The volt stick, always in my pocket and ready for action. I wonder how many sparks actually have a lock off kit in their tool box/bag ?
@TheMattSturgeon2 жыл бұрын
The non-contact volt stick doesn't even *_prove_* it's live tbh... I've hade several instances where it picks up a "phantom" voltage that disappears as soon as the conductor is connected to something referenced to earth. _Some_ 2-probe testers can also detect such phantom voltages, if the internal impedance of the tester is high enough. That's why some come with a little "test" button you can push to reduce the internal impedance and get a "truer" voltage reading.

You're right Matt, they go off whenever they want sometimes. I'm sure all makes and models have the same technology inside them? Yet I always seem to have one in my pocket at all times 🤷🏼♂️

Great, classic presentation of the SIP. I was always instructed to do it myself (not rely on others information). After all, would you cross the road without looking?

Good analogy 👏 👍🏻

Not sure what approved tester you have but touching the ends together does exactly same thing as a proving unit.

DI-LOG combivolt1 had them about 10 years and still going strong ish.

Good video but, the way you move the probes it is incorrect. You had the probe all the time on the brown conductor when you moved the second probe to the earth. The same with L and N

Nice straightforward video, many thanks. One question about sockets. If you want to run a spur socket from an existing socket how would you establish whether the existing socket was on the ring and not a spur itself?
@JBE10 ай бұрын
The simple way would be the existence of only 1 cable suppling the socket. A socket outlet on the ring circuit would have two cables coming to it.
