Obviously this varies but a general guideline: 90 - 95 C: Sorta safe, but pushing the limit. 95 C for short periods of time (less than 1.5 hours) is perfectly fine, but if it runs that hot for several hours or longer that’s bad. It won’t instantly melt your CPU or anything but it will probably wear down parts if you let it get that hot regularly. If your CPU gets this hot or hotter, every hour you should let it cool off for 15 minutes. 80 - 90 C: the hottest “decent” operating temperature. While not great, it’s perfectly safe for 95% of CPUs to be 85 C for long periods of time. Obviously lower is still better, but you shouldn’t run into any real issues. Most components can handle a minimum of 90 - 95 C. 70 - 80 C is good. Try to stay in this range if you can. It’s not always realistic for gaming PCs to stay lower than this if it doesn’t have good airflow, but maintaining 70 - 80 C should possible even with a bad cooking setup if you crank the fans up. But if your rig has weaker fans or poor heat dispersion and it gets a bit hotter than this, it’s no big deal. 60 - 70 C: Great. A rig that can keep temps this low is really efficient and this is the ideal operating temperature. While theoretically, under 60 C would be even better, it’s just not always gonna happen with the parts currently available unless you have great airflow.

No, the colder the better. Lowers resistance of the components. Ideal temperature for most electronic components is -273°C. Also minimizes wear on components. Components that run colder, live longer. For computer components you get a higher stability. There is a reason why people overclock using sub ambient methods such as dry ice, liquid nitrogen or even liquid helium.

As he listed a lot of the maximum but as he said there is no real optimal temp there is only break your shit temp. You trying to answer a no real answer question build your buffer set a lower max and a lower(i mean lower as higher in temp for this) min then suggested by the company and it may just last longer.
@dunxy8 жыл бұрын
With decent cooling you're going to hit voltage limits well before temp limits these days, so temp limits are pretty irrelevant. When overclocking i dont bother looking at temps as ive never seen any chip ive ever overclocked (on decent cooling) in 10 yeas+ hit max temp.I do however worry about vcore, i actually measure my vcore with a DMM as software either under (real vcore above what software reports) or over (vcore is less than software reports) reports it.That being said i ran my 2d gen i7 for years @ 1.425 vcore, which is over intels max.Chips fine and runs same as it ever did.Just my 2c.

It's a good idea...however, in the case of GPU I do have one thing to say about it. I own a XFX Radeon 7970 3 GB DD video card, and I found out there is a Black Edition of the exact same card which is just an overclocked version with the exact same cooler. So what I did was find the overclock values of the Black Edition, set my video card to them, and then I retuned the fans to keep the card cool enough to last long appropriately. By keeping my CPU and GPU between 30 C and 50 C at all times, I made a RAM channel timer chip on it's last legs last 5 months more than it should have from the majorly reduced heat stress inside the system. (The CPU is the highest contributor to overall case heat, and anything past 50 is where other components start getting grumpy about the heat.)

***** alot of cpu's/gpu's from amd have a black edition wich is mostly almost the same with higher clock speed

@ericlarocque365210 жыл бұрын
Sometimes they will be different than each other, other times like Calvin said they will be just the same card with different clock speeds. The only reason I really chose to overclock to the settings of the Black Edition is because my card is exactly the same as the Black Edition but with a slower clockspeed out of the box, and after testing in a few games I found the overclock settings of the Black Edition to be much smoother and reliable for me than the stock clock speeds.

Arthas Leks mineral oil probably acts as a conductor, no? nitrogen isn't that expensive, afterall 78% of air _is_ nitrogen. Also, there are already liquid N cpu coolers, but they seem to have the condensation problems mentioned. my thoughts were to put the whole system into a custom tank to eliminate these probs...

Have had a Phenom II 965 for 5-6 years and it still runs new releases (been running FO4 at 60fps on high settings). Keeping your temps below max is a good way to preserve your components, and considering CPUs don't advance much anymore, it can be a good money saving measure.

@MariusMinde9 жыл бұрын
Ryan Hart That is what he said, and if you think about it that is an argument FOR putting the PC in a cold room like a freezer. Since you want the surroundings to be cooler than your PC the surroundings cannot be too cold. However, if you have a normal HDD in your PC you might have trouble with moving parts at temperatures below 0 Celcius.

You forgot to talk about motherboard temperature! Most important thing! It has to stay (ideally) below 38°C, if you want your CPU and GPU coolers to work efficiently. This involves a power supply sucking air out of the chassis, assisted by a rear fan, ideally 92mm or bigger. If you do not have a front fan, the chassis must have a side vent. If your power supply is isolated, you need a top fan also. Fire up Aida64 stability test and make sure you adjust the fan speeds so that your mobo temp stays under 38.

shane buchanan Right now where I live, ambient outside temp is 29C with 67% humidity. My HD7970 runs at 40C and peaked at 72C according to Open Hardware Monitor and CAM. cpu got 90c only when there was like +25 in my room and running interburn test, in rendering 70c and gaming never over 60c. The FX8320 draws too much current in those specs for my 8+2 phase motherboard, i will upgrade cooling and leaky capasitors when i go to water, and i will aim for even more than 5ghz. i have experience for overcloking like 10 amd cpu's and i had under this same mobo and cooler phenom 2 955 4.5ghz 1.6vcore and it is still running in my second pc. phenom has now been in those clocks for 4 years and still going strong. For my CPU I like to aim for 65 or lower and for my GPU I go for 80 or lower. My usual operating temperature under load for my GPU is about 78 degrees but after adding a side fan to my case (CM storm scout) my GPU dropped to 68 degrees under load, which is chilly by GPU standards. This is good and I'm sure it has contributed to my GTX 770 lasting years since I got it. Yes, you could theoretically run it at much higher temperatures, but in my opinion, I think you greatly put the card's lifespan at risk by doing so.

Commenting on this video 6 years later. I've been running a laptop with an I7 (3517U) for 7 years now. It was supposed to run at 1.9GHz (says the manufacturer, samsung) and at the task manager shows both 1.9 (cpu name) and 2.4GHz(base clock). However, it runs with frequent peaks at 2.91 and it hits 95 degrees C very often. The bottom of the notebook is made of aluminum, which already lost its paint due to heat (you can fry an egg there). Despite that, I've been running without any drawbacks. Now the notebook is dying due to other causes (screen) so it was worth it (to get the extra performance). Recently changed thermal paste and it is still kicking.
